Bears don’t truly hibernate they voluntarily go into a state of rest called torpor when food is scarce. Sows have to den to give birth but as long as food is available boars can and will stay active. Like in Florida, a lot bears remain active through the winter.

Most bears in that area don't break into people's home. And most aren't 500 pounds. You can't domesticate a wild animal, but you can teach some boundaries. There's no guarantee they won't still ignore them, but there's conclusive evidence, that bears can adapt.

Unfortunately, we'll see this happen more often as their habitat shrinks. There's a reason why wild animals should be afraid of humans. Sadly, there are idiots who keep feeding them and not thinking about the consequences. The homeowners need to be educated as well instead of just putting all the blame on an animal that is doing nothing but trying to survive. The saying "A fed bear is a dead bear" should be printed and slapped on homeowners faces so they remember. In the end, it's not the humans who built in their territory that suffer, it's the animals. Oftentimes, they pay with their lives.

Thank you Ann for doing what is best for all concerned. The increased housing in and around Tahoe is taking away the animals hunting capabilities for the bears, then people complain when they invade the housesl. Hopefully, this bear can be rehomed to a sancuary and not euthanized.
*For those saying "Relocate him"* she says at the end it either just moves the problem to someone elses neighborhood or results in the death of the bear (because they have grown too used to raiding humans). Hank needs to be placed in a facility where he can kick up his paws and be fed. 🐻
And whose fault is that? Definitely not the bear but humans who don't seem to understand that a fed bear is a dead bear. The authorities need to educate people they they built homes in these animals natural habitat. What did they think? Bears will just disappear and go somewhere else? Euthanizing is not the answer. Another will wander and people will continue to feed them. In the end, it's the animals that pay with their lives because humans are too arrogant to see their own mistakes.
Hank's family has been there for generations. It's these homeowners who are squatting on his land. They should be relocated 😂 😂 But seriously, as a wildlife biologist, we will see more of this in the future. Their natural habitat continue to shrink as we expand. Then there are folks who feed wildlife and become too comfortable with humans. And folks cry when inconvenienced. It's a disaster waiting to happen. The problem isn't the bear. It's humans. This world belongs to them too. But folks are too stupid to realize that because of their own ignorance. In the end animals always pay with their lives.
Hank's problem started after the fire went through South Lake Tahoe last summer. The town was evacuated and that left a lot of unattended houses for a couple of weeks. I bet Hank was forced out of the hills and into town where he was safe from the fire. Somehow he figured out that houses have food in them and that's when he started his life of crime. lol

Hank the Tank was carefully trained by his mother, who gave him survival skills. Unfortunately, these don't include foraging in the wild. No euthanizing him or any other bear. Yes, he needs a sanctuary home. Whenever we build in the territories of wild animals we have to figure this into our plans for our homes.

I know it is difficult for most people nowadays; but do the kind and right thing! The Bible says that we are to be the caretakers of the animals. Hank can be humanely moved to an animal sanctuary. The volunteers or employees there, will feed him.

Huge for a black bear but don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s slow and sloppy, you can tell in the videos that he carries his weight very well, I had an old over weight Pit bull I had to push her ass to get on the coach but when the cat came in the room she was like a rocket, don’t be fooled thinking any animals weight is to your advantage
Btw that fool used to get inside our cabin every winter right up the road from garwoods untill guess what ? WE STOPPED LEAVING FOOD IN THE CABIN UNATENDED ! He deff did way less damage than most theifs for sure and only took food the least important/expensive item in question , will they ever outlaw stupidity ?
