He wrote from his own experience. Had a rough childhood, a bad marriage, and drank himself to death. Nowadays, we'd say he suffered from depression. These words are not written to just sell records. They are poetry to express himself. Beautiful imagery.
Those old Country songs were bluesy and had a lot of soul. The imagery in this song is beautiful. Hank Williams had a voice that reaches into you with its sincerity. It's also uncommon today to hear a man sing about his feelings, his vulnerability, and his sorrow and not lose a single bit of his masculinity. It takes a real man to be unafraid to say what he's feeling.
He's not just singing a song. Hank wrote all his songs, and bared his soul through his lyrics and talent for singing and playing. It's poetry and art. He's a country legend for a reason.
Hank Sr is known as the Hillbilly Shakespeare. He also recorded under the name Luke the Drifter. You can't go wrong with Hank, Sr. His songs were inspired by his troubled and pain filled life. He died when he was 29 on New Years day 1953.
Back in the old days, the word blue meant very sad or depressed. I love your reactions. This man led a tragic life, and was a poet for the common people. Keep on keeping on, young Gentleman.
Country’s gonna change your life. I’m thankful your checking this stuff out, as I said it will change your entire perception of life and reality.God bless!!!
Hank sr was very poetic he wrote how he really felt about love life and death he died at the age of 29 I truly believe he died from a broken heart they will never be another Hank Williams Sr his music is forever
It's the simplicity of the melody combined with the incredible imagery in the lyrics, plus the urgency in Hank's voice and the bluesy quality he had. THIS is the reason he was a star way back when, and why he's still revered as a singer and songwriter today, 70+ years after he died.
I love the fact that you can appreciate his songwriting skills. This man was so far ahead of his time it's scary. And he was definitely one of if the original outlaws.
He grew up in abject poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s and suffered a severe birth defect called spina bifida that damages nerves that control lower body movements, which prevented him from playing games and being active with other children his age. His chronic back pain and a failed operation led to addiction to painkillers, alcoholism, anorexia and heart damage. In 1953, at age 29, he died from a heart attack in the back seat of his Cadillac while being driven to his next concert.
Hank suffered from the mildest form, spina bifida occulta [hidden]. Some people with it don't have symptoms or even know they have it. In Hank's case it meant that his pain was more severe, but that pain wasn't inevitable if he hadn't hurt his back.
I first heard this song when I was a child, and I was thunderstruck. It is still, after all these years and all this music, the most touching song I've ever heard.
Hank Williams Sr was outlaw country before outlaw country was a thing. Many have called him the Hillbilly Shakespeare. So many great songs and pure poetry. Many were penned under the name Luke the Drifter.
Hey bro. Hank is the best songwriter of his era. I grew up listening to Hank Williams. I'm thrilled other people are starting to enjoy his timeless hits. Awesome! Much love and resident ruin you and yours.
Hank Williams Sr was a very talented man. You could give him a statement about topic and he could write a song about it. His son and grandson is also very talented
Hank Williams Sr went from house to house in his early years listening to family's of all races on there front porches singing folk songs from there heritage. Alot of his inspiration came from that. That is as America as you can get in the music industry and why those songs were such a gift
His mother forced him to do his dads music.. til he said. ENUFF. The rest is history. 😡 lov ur chan. Glad young people can find and enjoy our old stuff. -1949 even before my time. And im gettin up there.67! Classic. Genius. Rock star famous!! Keep it up young man. You ll be glad you didnt miss it.. trust me.. peace.. dan.. north fl-5/30/23
I appreciate you understanding and getting the lyrics! This music is timeless and expressed so much better than some of todays' artists! Times change but thank you for guarding the flame of country music!🤠🤠🤠
I grew up on Hank cause he was my grandfathers favorite and between this song, tear in my beer and Hey Good Lookin were his favorite songs. So many memories rushing back listening to that. After Sr died Jr toured performing Sr's Songlist with Waylon Jennings(Struggles granddad), Merrill Hagerd, Willie Nelson and Cash and Sr's Wife was acting road manager basically to keep an eye on Jr and keep them all out of trouble and showing up to gigs. Then Hank the 3rd(which actually sounds like Sr) continued the tradition by singing Sr's songlist also while adding some of his own original songs in aswell and now has his country music band and also has a scream metal band. Great react especially to this cause not many from our generation would listen to him let alone connect to it.👍👍👍
Hank Williams, Sr. was awarded a Citation by the Pulitzer Prize committee for excellence in songwriting and his contributions to moving country music into the mainstream of American life. He was recognized by artists from all genres of music for his influence on their careers😢 Seventy five years after his death, they are still writing tribute songs about him and making references to him in numerous songs. He was a national treasure. His actual recording career only lasted six years. He died at the age of 29, and yet he had a profound impact on the world of music.
The song is meant to evoke the mood we have when we are so depressed everything we see seems reminiscent of that. In happy times a Robin in Autumn weather is bright and chirpy to our eyes but when we are depressed the same bird is weepy and indicates the “death” of the coming winter. Also ‘he sounds too blue to cry’ is using ‘blue’ as a mood. Maybe it’s old-fashioned but “I’m feeling blue” is a way to describe being ‘down in the dumps’.
I enjoyed that too. Hank Williams was a favorite of my parent's generation, I didn't pay attention to my parent's music. I've learned to appreciate it as you are also learning. An experience two strangers can share.
As Luke the Drifter, Hank did a spoken verse recording about "Men With Broken Hearts." Many years later, Elvis recited some of those lines before singing "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." Both would be worth listening to if you can find them on youtube.
THAT'S WHERE IT CAME FROM! Oh wow. I love the Elvis performance you're talking about. Walk A Mile In my Shoes. Now I'm wondering who wrote that song. Did Sr write that song also?
Now you're hearing the greatest of all time. Kind of gives you a whole new perspective on poetry put into music and done with such grace and inspiration.
Hank wrote 170 songs 55 top 10 singles In which 12 of those were #1 over a span of 15 years. He died in 1953 at 29 years old of a heart attack from alcohol and pills. He would write songs overnight im between shows
My mother was born the year Hank died, when I was 6 years old she played Hank in the car and I have been listening ever since, if you can't feel his songs not sure you can hear
You can tell that he had the opportunity to be able sit and reflect on the nature that surrounded him back then', because he lived a Hobo's life for a while before he became something, he used to hang around the Delta Blues Bars and the players back then''.
Hank Williams Sr. became one of the biggest stars in country music - paving the way for those who followed, and a hero to many big names in the country music industry. He was known for his relationships with African-American blues singers - most importantly street musician Rufus "Tee Tot" Payne, who was significant in his musical development. Williams was a young white musician in the Jim Crow south. As a teenager, Williams used play his guitar on the street or on the front porch with Tee Tot. The older singer taught him to play blues guitar and got Williams interested in blues rhythms and phrasing, which would become central to his specific style of country music. He is regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers and songwriters of the 20th century, and is known as "the Father of Country and Western Music"
Really ❤ your reactions. I also often wonder, “Who? How?? How do people come up with such emotional and beautiful lyrics?” I love this one so much, still on my playlists.
They put their heart there for you to see, they were not afraid because they knew you could not hurt their heart with lies. I did not call anyone a liar. They know who they be.
Dude I really think your feelings towards this song is awesome. My native grandparents used to play this song on the piano and stand up bass and sing together and your reaction is so pure. It's a magical song
You have a poet's soul. I love how much you can appreciate the brilliance of some of these lyrics. Another Hank Williams Sr. song I appreciate was Cold Cold Heart. Then Norah Roberts did a brilliant cover of it, so much fun to listen to the contrasting take on the same song. I grew up listening to Hank Williams.
Please play "Your Cheating Heart" and also " Jambalaya" by Hank Williams Sr. And also "Me and Little Andy" by Dolly Parton. Thank you so much young man. I really appreciate it very, very much and also listening to the words not just with your ears but with your heart. Have a Blessed Evening. PS: Only a person who has been hurt so much and so deep down inside can come out with these words. The soul is within and it has no color. Goodnight.
New to your channel. Hank Sr. is as raw, and as good, as country gets. Hope you listen to more of his music.....he's a helluva story-teller. Thanks for the post.
With his words he painted a pic of sadness and Pain!! Country music tells a story. A lot of his. He lived.. til the next time👍😋. Dan. Ps. Country music was born out of the blues. Its been said its a white mans blues? Idk bout that? But hank sr did learn a lot from a man called - T TOT. Taught hank to play guitar.. read up on him. He led a sad pain filled life.thats how he wrote the words you just heard… Sad!!
I grew up to this era of music in my home. My parents loved it. I learned to appreciate it. You just dont hear it like this anymore. My Mamas favorite Hank Sr song was Hey Good Lookin
It’s important to know, This very important Man did not get the respect he deserved until he died. Worth reading and learning about Hank Sr and Hank Jr. The facts are important of their lives thus, important to learn for yourself…not through rumors.
If you could watch the Hank Williams story starring Tom Hiddleston ( Loki ) as Hank Sr., you could see what a sad, rough life he lived. And Hiddleston did an amazing job as Hank Sr.
He was old style. When he sang he was telling his story. Like when Patsy sang ballads. She was living it as she sang. Gladys has the same gift. So many singers are just performing a song these days.
If you've ever heard the Monday night football advertisement song that starts "are you ready for a party? Are you ready for some football?" Then you've heard Hank Jr. His songs are more to the hard partying kind, although he has put out several albums with a variety of music. Definitely worth a listen.
"who thinks of something like that?" Yes! I like how you let them lyrics take you somewhere. A good song shud do that. Good response, much respect for your opinion. Respect. Thank you for listening with objective EARS.
Hank sr had something wrong with his back.. it caused him to live with the worst pain imaginal.. he abused prescription pills some.. but he was a great artist.. he was actually one of the few that paved the way for artist of all genres
Tim mcgraw and Faith Hill bought his old home that was left untouched because the acoustics were great! Still had bullet holes in the walls and ceiling where he would get blitzed and shoot his pistol in the house
