I think the main thing this might transform is getting more people into backcountry skiing. Having a place you can go to with signs, amenities, (assumedly) some safety regulation, and runs already planned makes it easy for people who haven’t toured before to get a good experience.

France was full of back country resorts during the Covid season. All the ski lifts were closed for the whole season and all my local resorts were like this. It was the best season of my life. I also thought we should develop the idea of ski areas without lifts as a natural alternative. People seemed to enjoy ski touring with a little bit of infrastructure like signage and easy parking. I love this video, thanks for sharing.

There are natural alternatives already, they’re everywhere. In Europe you can hike up any mountain you wish.

Was never able to make it to Bluebird in Colorado, but I love the idea, and I hope Hankin Evelyn succeeds (even though it's even farther away from me than CO). And I appreciate all the people putting their time and money and investments into creating new ski areas like this--they WILL be part of skiing's future. I can just feel it.

There is always support for this idea, but will it thrive in practice? BC experiences are free, so it doesnt attract existing BC skiers much. Bluebird Backcountry didnt last long in Colorado. One could chalk that up to it being the the middle of BFE, but we will see. If this was as convenient to get to as my local zones, it would have some draw.

Went there twice in February Great area for people new to touring, or who are conservative in terms of risk. The bulk of the gladed runs have little to no avvy risk. The access to the Alpine is immediate. Will be returning next March.

Bluebird Backcountry outside of Kremmling Clorado was an awesome experiment. It would still be up and running if it was a bit closer to the Front Range and Denver, we were all super bummed when it shut down. Best of luck with the project!

I hope we see more places like this! Bluebird Backcountry attempted it outside of Steamboat CO and only made it a couple of years- hopefully Hankin does better! It looks like they will have access to much more interesting terrain, so that's a start!

Part of the issue was using private land, this seems like a partnership with the national forest to help build sustainable areas for safety - a drastically different platform than charging people for land use and rentals/lessons. The best thing we have close to this is Hidden Valley in RMNP.

Bluebird was never gonna make it. There’s ample other places in CO that are similar to this; ghost ski areas, hut zones, etc. granted our snowpack isn’t nearly as good/deep as BC

This is a move in the right direction for snow-sports as the vibe at ski resorts is increasingly souring… crowded, desperate, expensive, and unnatural. I just want snow and my snowboard these days and none of that excessive and distracting bouche shit.

Yeah it's like hiking in the snow but way more fun on the way down, it's great. It's ok, it's not for everyone, more for us. It's fine, have fun skiing in traffic on tracked out icy snow.

@@joeyrogerson83Yep i will have fun descending mountain 15 times and stopping for hot meal while you will be walking trough the deep snow all that time. The latter sounds like punishment to me, but each to his own :D Also not having to worry about avalanches is pretty appealing to me :D

@martinzurek6390 definitely happened to My Cain on Vancouver Island. Industry pros came for a shoot and then alllll the city folk wanted a piece the following year. Still a rad spot but certainly not the same.

@@gdybdal While I somewhat agree with the sentiment, there's a big difference between a gear/outerwear brand giving small mountains like ours publicity versus large corporate buy-ins that we've seen at the larger resorts. I can deal with slightly longer lines if it means a better budget to manage and upkeep what we have at our little locals.

Some of the best days of my life (so far) have been spent at a local abandoned ski resort. The trails are still there but the lifts are not.

I love this as a way to get into ski touring. Never been myself but this seems like a great way to try out things you’ve learned after a guided tour with a bit of a safety net. Can’t wait for this to catch on. And surely this would also make certain areas cheaper for those that don’t mind earning their run.

really nice concept. i would like something like this close to my home. also very sustainable. In the ski resorts closest to me in Austria the pow is gone after like 1 hour past opening. Especially on holidays and weekends. However what works well for me is taking the chair and then hike some lines. This way i get untracked powder but i dont have to hike as much as without the lift.

It’s funny, when I was younger I did not have the time to hike for the pow now retired I do have the time and I am still very fit, I do a lot of long distance backpacking. I enjoy hiking and I enjoy skiing, so this sounds great.

I use to work at a ski resort well actually 3 in my time .....as a ski patroller and we had a open boundry policy ....wich was great for the public to acess the back and side country areas around our hill .....we had 4 lifts there . But i was always out of bounds skiing back out there .....ha ! Im retired now and still skiing the back country with my dogs in my back yard . But yea always look at mountains like a land scaper wanting to take a chainsaw up there and cut in some runs....😂

i would have also included a brief segment on avalanche awareness and getting AIARE trained. avalanche terrain is unforgiving, even for the experienced.

That's the first thing I thought of. I remember reading about a guy setting off a big slide at Aspen Highlands during covid when the lifts were closed As soon as you are in a situation where the any terrain is no longer constantly bombed by ski patrol and the snowpack is not constantly compacted by skiers it's a whole different ballgame

Fantastic. I was a little skeptical when I saw the title, but a minute in I realized I love it. I skin up the hills at the resorts my family goes to but don't have companions for heading to the backcountry (or the skills/confidence to do it myself), but this would be a dream come true. I wish there were something like that near me. And highest praise for pointing out that we can't really own anything, that future generations always have to step in and take over. Great things happening!

Have you ever tried touring skis? It's much easier and faster than hiking, and pretty much everyone is able to hike those same mountains in summer.

Wonderful idea.From 1984-1993 ,I got hooked on Telemark skiing as a gateway to backcountry skiing.So glad the gear has improved,and evolved more Alpine skiers to enjoy the sams experience. This was in the central Sierra Nevada mtns. of California

I helped fall and buck trees for this project years ago. It’s such a cool area and there was a ton of work done by the BC Forest Fire Fighters for training before the fire season was on.

Because you know that those places will be fun to ride, that they are easily accessible and are (hopefully) safe Personally I always did backcountry skiing on my own on public land, but it's not always fun because the places you can go are sometimes hard to reach and they aren't always what you expected, while now two provincial parks in my area opened some dedicated backcountry skiing areas and it's 10x more fun than what I used to do

Looks amazing but two questions come to mind. Is he trying to make money on this, if so, how. Also, what are they doing to reduce avalanche risk. If this was in the US, the liability would kill the profitability. Us ski resorts have to jump through so many ridiculous hoops and people still sue them all the time. Europe and Canada are the only places this would work and I still question if you would be able to make money unless you're working with the parks department.

I don't think I'm gonna hit a resort this season. The place by me raised lift tickets from $109 to $139 this year and it's always overcrowded and shredded out by noon. I'm doing all back country and a cool hitchhiking spot that always has untouched pow if you know where to go

This is what skiing in the Rocky Mountains of the USA were like during the 1940's and probably much earlier. People would regularly drive their Jeep as high as they could up logging trails, then hike up the mountain and ski down.

It is a really interesting idea, out of curiosity how is the avalanche and other hazards are dealt with? Is it basically up to whoever is there and if they die they die ;) or there is a volunteer patrol of sorts? Seems like instead of clean cutting runs it would be a lot safer to thin them but leave enough trees to make chance of slides less? How many people die per year? Was there any trouble with lawsuits and such?

I love this concept. With the high cost and crowded slopes skiing becomes unappealing when it shouldn't. When I learned to ski we lived in a hilly area in Northern Michigan. I ski toured to these back woods hills. Then I got older and started going to resorts, then ski team, then I graduated and that all ended. I started a life with a family. I only came back to skiing through a buddy that we used to ski together since about 3rd grade. We skied again together for about 5 years then he was killed in a motorcycle accident. I am now not skiing again and I miss it.

Nah, I just ride the gondolas and chairlifts to the top of the mountain and save some precious time, because time is a valuable resource to some of us. Clearly not you though.
