Fun Fact: The line "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti(Amarone in the book)" is a nice little medical joke. Liver, fava beans, and alcohol are all things you should not consume when taking an MAOI, an older type of antidepressant. He's basically admitting/flexing that he wasn't on his meds at the time. lol
Is there tyramine contained in any of those products because I know that it's a chemical that's supposed to be contraindicated with the use of MAOI antidepressants? 🤔
@@JeepersCreepers2013 You're not alone in that opinion. Foster and the original director declined to return because they found the sequel too lurid, and a lot of reviewers shared the sentiment. Definitely a subjective thing, but there's also symbolism there. Particularly as Hannibal began by feeding Krendler his pre-frontal cortex, as indicated by his somewhat-uninhibited behaviour (though, of course, he was also heavily drugged). Some parallels with concepts like Odin, in Norse mythology, having to lose an eye to gain wisdom, etc.
Yeah, the popper Hannibal offered Mason actually contained angel dust, methamphetamine and LSD. So, when we say he was high, that's a *bit* of an understatement.
@@ph8429 There is other movie where poppers were used , Blue Velvet , where Dennis Hopper , used his own experience what the drug make you do , but that was amyl nitrite , that he inhaled from a tank .
RIP to French actor Gaspard Ulliel who portrayed a younger Lecter in Hannibal Rising and died today in a skiing accident. Apparently he's also in the new upcoming Marvel series Moon Knight.
I LOVE this movie. I think it's beautifully made. I think Julianne Moore did a great job. Both Jodie Foster and her brought something special to the role. I once listened to the director's commentary and he said if she would have answered yes to his question if she would have told him stop if he loved her, then he would've easily killed her. But since he likes that she doesn't make it easy for him he didn't.
This is definitely a good sequel although I still wish Jodie had come back. Julianne did a good job as well. The difference between this movie and the first is that Silence of the Lambs is meant to be a psychological thriller/ horror while this one mixes psychological horror with more violence and gore. The soundtrack makes it creepy and as always Anthony Hopkins does amazing in his role. The way he portrays Hannibal almost makes you feel like he can be trusted or that he's innocent, but he quickly shows you how and why Hannibal cannot be trusted ever.
I have the same opinion between the two movies. I think the camera angles and use of shadows in this one surpasses the direction and camera work in silence of the lambs. I actually like this movie better between the two but not too many people for some reason share that opinion
He really has an attachment to people who get closest to understanding him. So few in his life ever did or could. Clarice and Will Graham (from Red Dragon and the Hannibal show) are pretty much the only ones.
Still he picked handcuffs behind his back in Silence of the lambs , so why he suddenly cant do it , it's a bit of poor writing . Also the brain scene , always reminds me of a comedy on TV in 1980s , where guy with hangover has a radio and there is a cooking program on , how to prepare and cook brains and that poor guy cant turn the radio off and ends putting it to a freezer , so he cant hear it ... you could buy livestock brains up to mad cow scandal .
@@pete_lind do you mean the ending with Clarisse handcuffing them? He was stressed and wanted to escape the cops. I also think internally he had an idea that Clarisse might actually let him go since she likes him.

Lecter has no attachment to Graham: he gives his address to Dollarhyde, telling him to kill Graham and his family. At the end of the novel, he sends Graham a letter where he says he hopes he doesn't look too ugly after Dollarhyde disfigured him (clearly mocking him). Hell, Lecter actually tried to disembowel Graham himself before he was captured.
Thanks to the tv show most people think they have this frenemies dynamic when, in canon Hannibal hated Will and wants him dead. That's because in the tv show they made Will a kind of Clarice hybrid giving him part of her characterization.
Hopkins is outstanding, again. He obviously plays Hannibal as a completely insane, evil serial killer. But he also plays him as a charming, intelligent, witty and sophisticated man. In lesser hands, the role wouldn't work as well. The cinematography and soundtrack are beautiful. I read the book before I saw the film, and the ending is quite different....
Even though Sir Anthony isnt in 'Manhunter', Brian Cox did a great job as Hannibal. I seriously recommend it. Also, a pre-CSI William Petersen is phenomenal in it.
One of my favorite small things in this movie (well, one of many), is that he gifts her the Gucci shoes. A throwback to SotL when he said , "You know what you look like to me, with your good bag and your cheap shoes. You look like a rube. A well-scrubbed, hustling rube, with a little taste. "
Thier is another movie which is set during ww2 and during hannibal's childhood. It delves further into his backstory from then into his early adulthood. Hannibal Rising, I'm sure you guys would enjoy that. Young chap playing young hannibal does an amazing job.
Red Dragon was a very good film. The director Brett Ratner mimicked the style of Johnathan Demme so it matches style-wise to Silence of the Lambs. I've read the novels by Thomas Harris; Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal so I am aware of the differences from the novels and the films. My only problem with the film Red Dragon is the casting of Ed Norton as the protagonist Detective Will Graham. Ed Norton doesn't have the intimidating hardened look that an actor like Guy Pearce would have had if he were cast instead. Hannibal the film is a major departure from the novel. Many enthusiast of both the film and novel Silence of the Lambs were horrified and upset about the evolution of Clarice Starling in the novel Hannibal. In the novel, Clarice becomes more like Hannibal. She becomes a cannibal like him and they become lovers. Mrs. Movie, since you studied psychology the novel may be very interesting to you. It gradually shows how a noble and principled a character like Clarice can be corrupted (character study).
Teresa is a fourth novel from Thomas Harris, Hannibal rising, is from 2006 and tells the story of a young Hannibal during WWII and how he became a cannibal and a killer; there is also a movie adapted from that novel; check them out, I'm sure that you will like them.

After watching "Red Dragon," you should watch 1986's "Manhunter." The first version of "Red Dragon." Michael Mann directing, William Peterson as Will, Brian Cox as Dr. Lecktor.
I adore, adore Hopkins as Hannibal. He brings such class, terror yet charm to the character. What a conversationalist, provided he didn't eat me lol. I'd love to spend an evening talking with Lecter, again proved he didn't eat me
Okay, her expression throughout the brain thing made this whole reaction next level. I was dying 🤣 I can only imagine what her face will be like through the Hannibal TV series (which, by the way, is one of the greatest pieces of television ever - total masterpiece, and better than all the movies save perhaps Silence of the Lambs)
The brain scene is a perfect example of how to do visual effects. They used a combination of prosthetic makeup, animatronics, and CGI, in a way that makes it utterly convincing, even two decades later.
I don't disagree but imho belongs in a different film. This was the point where I switched off and I was at the Sydney Australia premiere.. I could not help but write off the last 110 minutes.. the book was so good
Red Dragon is a new screen version of the book with the same name. In 1986 the movie "Manhunter" was released, written and directed by Michael Mann. It features William Petersen as FBI profiler Will Graham. A very good psychological thriller by the same man who wrote and directed Heat, The Insider, Collateral etc.
I remember going to see this in cinemas in Europe when it was first released. The scene where Hannibal cuts off the piece of the brain and cooks it was longer. I have not seen this version ever since on any home movie format.
Yes it was one scene that almost made me sick and nothing ever does so obviously very enjoyable I remember the longer cut and yeah gross but also remember the parody in scary movie 2 where there is a rapper in shortys head😅😂
@@-M0LE I agree, even for me, I may have been 20 at the time and grew up with Freddy Kruger and Jason, but the extended cut of that scene freaked me out in my chair in the movie screen. The thought alone that this was happening was mind bending. I was waiting for Hannibal to punch his brain at the end and I was so relieved it wasn't. Ha ha, yeah, that bit in Scary Movie 2 cracked me up. "YOU DRUGGED HIM!! I Did not, that's his stuff." LOL
I feel like Hannibal rising would definitely shed some light on those doubts. It kind of answers the "why does he do all this" question. Some people really dislike that movie, and I normally don't like prequels that explain the psyche of the killer because it usually takes away the scary factor of the villain but in this case I think the prequel is worth it
I used to say that "I would rather eat my own brain" when there was something that had no chance of me doing it. But after watching this film I haven't used that saying anymore. :)
I read this book in high school when it came out in 1999 and thought this was a fairly decent adaptation. I had a few nit picks about some smaller changes but still a good movie on it's own. I appreciate that you're one of the few reactors who actually got around to this one after seeing Silence of the Lambs.
Just a tidbit. The book ends differently from the movie. There was a romance subplot in the book between Clarice and Hannibal with Clarice living with Hannibal at the end of the book. The movie entirely removed the romance subplot and the ending of the film turned out differently than that of the book.
Yes this, and it was actually filmed and shown to test audiences with a poor reaction. I believe it's available as an alternate on the DVD & Blu-ray versions.

Ü Hannibal hacked off his thumb so he can slip off the cuffs; if you can get a hold of the deleted scenes there is one where after fleeing Krendell's house he was watching fireworks with some locals and waved at them. You can see both his hands are still attached to him. Also, in the book, after the Verger-Krendell fiasco, Clarice left the FBI and joined Hannibal in Argentina.

The black and white video at 7:47 is a reference back to Silence of the Lambs in which Jack Crawford shows Clarice Starling a picture of the nurse who was attacked by Hannibal.
I waited ten years for Mr Harris to write 'Hannibal', the sequel to Silence of the lambs. He didn't disappoint and the film follows the book pretty closely...until the end, when the film makers/producers chickened out of allowing the amazing happy ending that was in the book. Here, Hannibal, the artist and piano player, cuts off his own hand to escape, instead of Starling's. In the book, he gives her a really deep psyche analysis, helps her see that everyone and everything in her life is bad and brings her crushed personality back. Then they fall in love and go off and live happily ever after. And it works...better than him cutting his own hand off. There's also some superb stuff in the book about Lecter's childhood and the amazing Mind Palace he creates. PS If you do hate when a character returns but there's a different actor playing them, you're going to hate James Bond! 🤣
I think that part of the book is very stupid. Why would she fall in love with him?? He's a serial killer who eats people. At least the movie ending is realistic.
@@sannaolsson9106 Because mind fucks are a powerful thing? She's not in control of her own mind by that time. It even says in the book that by the end Hannibal isn't sure how much of her relationship is voluntary or not but it fascinates him.

Also, cutting off your hand and then stopping the bleeding, running off just a minute ahead of the police, disappearing across a lake, evading the national hunt for you that will be going on, boarding a flight and getting away was surely a little unrealistic too? Also, this is someone who loves to paint and draw and play piano and write etc, so again unlikely he'd cut off his own hand, surely?
@@tonygriffin_ Yeah I'd say all that is more realistic than a level headed woman with integrity falling in love with a serial killer. And I'd also say that him cutting off his own hand is pretty fitting aswell since he's likes her. I didn't say HE didn't. He's smart but he's also a psycho so it fits with this movie. It wouldn't fit at all if it had the book's ending. She would've lost all the respect from most of the audience.

If it was Brawn you ate, it is not actually the brain. It is just meat from a pigs head. However Brain is a delicacy in both Turkish and certain Chinese cuisines
Oh, it was brain. Swedish food traditions can be a bit strange too and often include most parts of the animals. Pig brain isn't that popular now, but calf brain is sometimes called "a delicacy" even if that is stretching it.@@grabtharshammer
It’s not spelled out but it’s implied that Hannibal does what he does to mason as revenge on behalf of the kids mason assaulted. That he likes kids and doesn’t hurt them as they represent innocence, this makes more sense after Hannibal rising. “Show me how you smile to gain the trust of kids” then he removes his face as if to say “good luck getting them to trust you now”

I know it’s not the original, but I have a special place for it in my heart, having lived in Florence for a bit. All the locales are genuine, and I believe it was the first time a movie was allowed to be shot inside the Palazzo Vecchio (the municipal building). For me, that alone makes the movie worth a watch! 👍🏻 And if you are interested in the aria they used for this film, it is completely original! Composed by an Irish composer named Patrick Cassidy **i believe** for the film, along with Hans Zimmer. It’s called “Vide Cor Meum” and is based on the same sonnet by Dante from the “Vita Nuova” that Hannibal gifts to Allegra after the opera. Wonderful song! It also made a repeat appearance in another Ridley Scott film, “Kingdom of Heaven”, which I highly recommend you watch, as well! 👍🏻 Keep up the great work, Mr. and Mrs. Movies! You’re getting us all through rough times.
Nice one, y'all. It would be cool if you went through them all (even Hannibal Rising, with him as a child onwards). I miss Florence. I love that Ridley Scott loved that song from that opera so much that he put it in his Kingdom of Heaven (another worthy choice for a viewing). It's beautiful.
This is like the only reaction to Hannibal I can recall. Everyone always watches Silence but nobody ever watches this one. I realize it's not as good, but it's still pretty good, and has some crazy moments.
Gillian Anderson (Scully from The X-Files) was going to play Clarice in this movie, but her contract with X-Files kept her from doing it. I think she would've been an AWESOME Clarice (julianne moore's p good too I guess lol). But at least she got to play a different character in the TV series Hannibal.
If you guys like the movies, the series done by NBC was 3 seasons and stars Mads Mickelson as Hannibal and is outstanding. Mads plays a great Lecture that is both true to the character and yet entirely his own

I adore the gorgeous cinematography of the film, half shot in my favorite city of the planet, FIRENZE. A friend of mine gifted me a bottle of a 1994 - Château Phélan Ségur - wine for my 60th birthday , same Dr. Lecter enjoys on a plane after his escape.
A high bike seat is a sign of a rider with bad knees. I used to ride a lot, the first thing mechanics would ask me was "You must have bad knees." when they saw my bike. Apparently it's a common thing for riders with bad knees.
The reason Jodie Foster wouldn’t sign on for the second movie is because in the books, Clarice ends up romantically with Hannibal and they run off together in South America. She asked them to change the script. Once that was done, she was already booked for another project so they had to recast and kept this altered script.
Regarding chronology - Thomas Harris, author of the novel, is a master of combining what was past, what is present, and how the thoughts of the past influence us now, both what we think of, and who we are.. Hence the title Silence of the Lambs. So, any discussions about real chronology are.. vane...
In the novel, Starling and Lecter literally ride off into the sunset together as lovers. They obviously changed it for the movie (smart move, as that would never have worked in the movie, and another reason Jodie Foster didn't want to come back to the role) among other smaller things. Hannibal Rising is "ok" but Red Dragon is pretty good overall I feel. Edward Norton is great as Will Graham (which I think that character is also in the Hannibal TV show, but I've never seen that show yet) though, and again Hopkins kills it as Lecter lol

I believe there was a deleted scene where they revealed that one of the museum workers was the real-life Italian serial killer "Il Mostro." Hannibal recognizes him and says "I'm a great admirer of your work."

In the book it goes into detail abt why Hannibal isnt recognized by Police, Hannibal surgically alters his face to evade authorities. The movie's depiction is lacking in this area which is confusing but understandable from a movie making perspective. Probably not a great choice to hide or cover Hopkins' fantastic emotive reactions like they did with Oleman's character.
There is a fourth film that serves as an origin story called "Hannibal Rising", that shows him as a child and young adult and tells how he became the way he is. Many people didn't care for it, but I liked it.
