@@Morrisfactor The Heglands were a wealth of sailing knowledge and they definitely took care of Laughing Buddha. Jim and Nancy helped us out after they passed the torch and we really appreciate it. We have done a pretty extensive refit of the vessel in the past 2 winter seasons to ensure the legacy of the Heglands and the future adventures of Laughing Buddha. We still keep it in Annapolis until we’re ready to exit the Bay and take on the Atlantic.

I don't believe you for a second. My ULDB 60 footer which weighs the same as this boat absolutely will do that though - with a fin keel and spade rudder.

@@deerfootnz I could care less of what you believe or don’t believe. I am a US Sail Instructor and 100 ton master. This was a boat in which I was teaching a class. Large steep wave are common in the approaches of the G G. Swell coming in against a strong ebb. It can get a lot worse. Why the hell would I make this up. Or maybe you are just a troll. Either way. Congrats on your new boat. The Catalina 27 is a good starter boat. IMHO the best part is, you can find them just about anywhere. So when something goes wrong it's relatively easy getting replacement parts.

But they sail like bricks. It's not a boat it's a hair shirt. Hydrodynamics from the 19th century. So slow they are dangerous. Good luck trying to sail off a lee shore in light wind

The KP 44 is a much much better boat than any heavy displacement double ender with a 19th century underbody.

I delivered a 56ms from Puerto Vallarta to Mexico. Lovely boat, very much a motorsailor. Downwind it sailed adequately.

@@qdav5 Don’t let that scare you. The weight seems gargantuan but it actually sails well even in fairly light winds. The boat featured in most of the video is mine and I speak from experience. We sailed it in 10knts winds at a comfortable 7knts without much effort. The rigidity of the mast and the geometry of the structure allows for a powerful sailplan. With the 150% genoa you get plenty of power under sails 🙂

What size and type ... slow fat cats are not the best but there are some unorthodox global cats Like James Wharrams designs... Or the Dudley Dix plywood built designs. Our man here has done a nice tribute to James Wharram.. If you want to start a fight just say you like bridge deck catamarans 😂🧙🏻‍♂️🇬🇧 There are a number of channels that are building Aluminium live aboard cruising cats because they have had enough of coping with either GRP or helming boats from exposed aft helm's with only a Bimini to protect them against extreme heat , squalls and cold weather in the north. And trying to raise kids living in submarines in rocky or smelly anchorages and not being able to get inside reefs or dry out on a beech, sandbar or mud flat to scrape your hull or do maintenance checks and repairs. My personal favourite of the new bunch is the Windelo range. There's a new one on the way to the big Autumn boat show in the US. If you're looking for an older vessel there are some very tough older designs out there. There are also biplane rigged cats out there that simplify and improve sailing for the single or short handed sailor. One of the oldest and best known classic US boat builders and designers back around the 1900s actually built the first racing catamaran ..but it so upset the applecart he didn't get to develop the vessel beyond the experimental racing boat with no accommodation, a problem not solved till a French man and James Wharram got into the idea of building a cruising cat. By the time of creation Amaryllis, Nathaniel Herreshoff already had extensive engineering experience, but he had not yet designed sailing yachts. In 1876, Nathaniel created his first sailing boat, but what a sailboat!

They are much too heavy which means massive sail area and huge loads. It's not a great way to go. I have a sundeer 60 which weighs the same as this boat on the video. It has a 60ft waterline, less sail area and performs much better. I can single hand it easily and often do.

@@deerfootnz I beg to differ. But I can’t fault you for thinking that. The HC 41 featured belongs to me and I can tell you she sails surprisingly well despite the weight and old school hull plan. We had the best riggers in Annapolis and sesoned cruisers completely stunned at her performance under sails. To tell you the truth, we were surprised too. We expected it to be more effort to move her in light winds. And she really sings when we hit 20-30knts. Certainly not a race horse, but she tracks with comfort in seas that would rattle most production coastal cruisers. Laughing Buddha already crossed most of earth’s oceans and is set to do it again in the future hopefully.

There's a difference between "primitive" and "traditional" keel and rudder designs... the traditional design values of HCs are based upon a history of hundreds of years of working sail craft, Norwegian sailing lifeboats, etc, and as such are suited to certain tasks and conditions. The Dashew's Sundeer is an awesome and impressive passage-maker, but for us, we find our HC33 at half the size suits our needs very well - sea-kindly, comfortable, massive stowage, a great live-aboard in a small package with world-voyaging capability. Even with the availability of modern weather routing, global positioning and advanced communications opening up the option of voyaging in lighter, faster craft than ever before, we still appreciate the HC's ability to hove to and self-tend in heavy weather when the crew are needing respite, not to mention the joy of "being on rails" when sailing in a variety of conditions. We were also surprised by the HC33's ability to make 50% of apparent wind speed in very light winds. Clawing off a lee shore isn't an ideal situation for any skipper and crew to place themselves in, but there are also many other safety considerations, and for us with our own personal experiences over the last 50 years we like the bullet-proof HC hull that can withstand bouncing over a reef in a storm with only scratches to show for it. Beyond personal preferences, the important thing is "each to their own", and there are as many opinions as there are boats; no single-minded camp is likely to change its mind - or sell the boat they love and buy another type - based upon differences of opinion in RU-vid's comments section. Better to enjoy the vessel type you have chosen for what it means to you :)
