Title: Hans Döllgast (1891-1974): Post-War Heritage Reconstruction as Modern Architecture
Abstract: Hans Döllgast is the dark horse of twentieth-century modern architecture in Germany. Born two years before Hans Scharoun, Döllgast’s life and work falls right in the middle of the heroic generation of modern architecture. A maverick and self-declared ‘artistic stray dog’, as well as a fiercely independent-minded humanist, Döllgast was simultaneously at the centre and the margins of modern architecture. Döllgast engaged in what has rightly been termed ‘creative reconstruction’ in post-war Bavaria. This paper traces his key themes in his distinctive approach to the task architectural response to destruction and trauma.
