Hans Hoffmann is a German-American Abstract Expressionist painter considered one of the most influential art teachers of the 20th century. Mentor of Helen Frankenthaler, Ray Eames and Allan Kaprow, Hofman says "A teacher affects eternity, he can never say where his influences end." his work underlines the emotional expressive potentil of color, modulating the form / ground ratio thanks to the “Push and Pull” theory. Spring (1940), through his technique of drops and swirl painting, foreshadows the work of his friend Jackson Pollock. Born March 21, 1880 in Weissenberg, Germany, he worked for the Bavarian government before moving to Paris in 1904 and studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Colarossi. In 1915 he opened his own art school in Munich where he worked until 1930. He was then invited to the United States and settled there permanently. In 1960, his work was presented at the Venice Biennale and three years later, the MoMA in New York organized “Hans Hofmann and His Students” which exhibited the talents of former students of the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts.

Bravo! Thank you for posting them by progressing years. I suspect that many of us supposed that there was a clear breakpoint between his changing styles; however, we can now see that he frequently jumped forward, and then back, as his moods changed. And that helps see into the soul of a great colorist. Thank you for posting this great retrospective.

I began art school in 1976. The first word I heard as I recall is Han Hoffmann. My design and color theory teacher, Janie Poodry, RIP, had studied with in in the 50s after getting her MFA at Texas Womens University. She died recently in her nighties.
