Mayim Bialik has a joyful way of making education about Hanukkah entertaining and non-mystical. I love her summation: Every Hanukkiah is a Menorah but not every Menorah is a Hanukkiah. Happy Hanukkah fellow Academes!

Thank you for this!!! I recently learned I have pretty extensive Jewish heritage, so I’m celebrating Chanukah for the first time this year and trying to learn more about it. I got some of the true/false things wrong so this was very educational and enjoyable for me. Happy Chanukah Mayim!

Ironic. It's a religious holiday that celebrates a religious zealot who massacred his fellow Jews for not practicing Judaism purely enough. He wanted to choose and impose his monotheistic beliefs on everyone and killed or forced to flee those who did not agree. So... Religious freedom???

You are wonderful but please note that candles are placed in the Chanukiah from right to left and then lit from left to right. The video was a great teaching tool this year! I posted it and used it for my adult classes & for young students as well. I had a student 40 years ago who told me that her family used ketchup as well. Hey, it makes sense to me! BTW, I had hernia surgery this morning and your videos are cheering me up this afternoon (along with the fact that I don’t have to go to my synagogue board meeting tonight). For tomorrow, happy Shushan Chanukah! 😁

Thank you Mayim for sharing your beautiful spirit! I have a lot of Jewish friends who tell me, "You should be Jewish! Oy! What a Rebbi (I know it's actually Rabbi but Rebbi, as it was explained to me, is a beloved Rabbi - what? you think I'm that meshugana(?)?)you would have made! (I was, at one time, on the path to becoming a minister). I love Jewish food, Yiddish, and gorgeous Semitic men! Semitic good looks is a true-ism to me! Our New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus is doing 3 Hanukkah songs for our winter holiday concert - Light the Legend, Burn and the Hanukkah Can Can. Mazel Mazel to you and yours!

In this video I learned about the type of food they eat during Hanukkah. I also learned they do not get big presents just smaller ones like socks and pajamas. They also play a fun game were they spin a dreidel.

you got the menorah part slightly wrong - the 7th candle in the temple's menorah was not used to light the others. the fire to light the menorah was taken from the altar at the temple's courtyard.

We are not Jewish but our mother used to make Latkes for us all the time and we also had them with tomato sauce. A friend of mines late husband was Jewish and he made the best Latkes while she made the apple sauce in the slow cooker all day. He was well known for his famous Latkes. I am not religious at all. I am an atheist. I do love Theravada Buddhism (Sri Lankan) but not as a religion as man has made it to be--as an option. Once my ex husband was the fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof. I hate stage plays and musicals but Fiddler on the Roof is my only exception. It was my towns theatre company and it was so perfectly cast

deekat3279 White Elephant is a gift giving game. All the participants bring a gift -most WE games have a criteria of what kind of gift to bring, like price range or theme. All the gifts are wrapped, have no tags on them, and are placed in a pile. All players blindly draw lots to see who goes first, all the way to who plays last. At a turn, a player grabs a gift from the pile and owns to see what they get. However, a player can also choose to take whatever gift opened by another player, keeping the gift for themself. An open gift can be taken three times. At the third time, the gift is "frozen", meaning it cannot be taken again. Once the last gift is open, the game ends, and everyone keeps what they opened or took. It is fun a fun game; it's just three in one weekend feels a bit much. Hope they don't mind I might just bring a wrapped bag of sweets.

I worked a Chanukah event tonight as a caterer. The Rabbi made some remarks how light will always outlast darkness. Granted there is a current political climate which I won't make comments on. One of the little candles literally burned the entire time we cleaned up. Even as food service people we were making jokes, packing up the table cloths and throwing everything away around that table. That one little goofy black candle just didn't quit for right until we locked up.

I learned that Hanukkah is about a group of Jews called the Maccabees defeating the Seleucid army, and about a oil that lasted more than it should've. I also never knew Hanukkah was about freedom. It's so interesting learning about other holidays that you're not very familiar with.

Fun fact about #1: Hanukkah is mentioned casually in the New Testament's depiction of the life of Jesus in Judea. It was a relatively new holiday at the time, about a hundred years new, a sort of independence day of the time. Regarding the word "Hannukiah" - it's pretty new, from the time of your honoured ancestor. Most generations it was simply called a "Hannuah menorah".

I am Proud American Jewish person who takes pride in my Jewish Heritage. Some of my Ancestor's came to America from Israel, Poland, Germany, Russia, Prussia, France, Canada, and Ukraine. I was raised Catholic because of the persecution against Jewish people. Over The Past couple of Years, I have returned to my Jewish roots. I am actually starting my own Jewish Motorcycle Club as I am a motorcycle rider. I saw this video last Year around Hanukkah. I started making Latkes using The Manischewitz Potato Pancake mix. It was Good. Later on, I decided to make my own Latkes from scratch where I shredded the potatoes using a Cheese grater, some Raw onions, and then I used some flour in there. I fried them in Oil follow your video and my Homemade Latkes came out the best that I have ever made them. Thank You Mayim Bialik

Great video! One of the things you said about Hanukkah really resonated -- it isn't just about the presents (my feeling about Christmas, it should be really about the birth of Jesus and not the consumerism we see all around us). Also, I love latkes and some of the food you like to eat (jelly doughnuts) that are deep fried may be unhealthy but I like them anyway. My family likes to make crostoli at Christmas which is an Italian deep fried dough with icing sugar -- totally unhealthy but yum!

Chanukah saemach / Frayliche Chanukah and thanks for this video! Learnt some new stuff from it even though I thought I knew pretty much about this specific Jewish holiday... End with the ususal seasonal greeting here in Sweden: God jul! (Good yule to use some Old English-like words to translate it)
