I see just how bad it really is and also take a tour of this beautiful Norfolk seaside village

The Fact that the coast is clay and sand suggests that a couple of thousands of years ago it used to be an estuary to the North Sea. Being Dutch I know that keeping the sea at bay is a constant struggle. Even a mere 90 metres is just a very conservative estimate. The Dutch coastline changed in some places by several kilometers in a relative short timeframe.

I enjoyed this video very much, Tim. As a Norfolk man, born and bred, I am very familiar with Happisburgh and have visited it many times over the years. And despite being very aware of the coastal erosion here and across other parts of our Norfolk coast, updated footage never fails to make me really sad and upset when I'm reminded that this will one day soon - all be lost to the sea. 😫😢

So sad to see this video. We had a holiday at the caravan site by Happisburgh church in 2013. The caravans were already being removed from the edge of cliff then. It was very eerie. I explored the lighthouse area and beach area too. We rang the bells for the Sunday service which was an honour. The pub was good too for supper. It was a lovely village and we enjoyed our holiday very much. So glad we came.

Hi Tim, Cheers from a hot and sunny Sydney. I really liked the tour around Happisburgh. So interesting. Such a lovely place and it's sad to learn what has been lost to the sea and what may yet be lost. Ironically, Wikipedia says the name Happisburgh means 'Hæp's fort or fortified place'. Loved the church and the lighthouse and I hate to think they may one day be gone. It is interesting to note the long history of the area. According to Wikipedia, 800,000 year old flint tools have been found on the beach as well as the oldest human footprints outside of Africa. Sadly they were washed into the sea soon after their discovery. Hoping they can find a way to stop any further erosion...

I’m 40 and in my lifetime, the erosion at Happisburgh has been frightening! There were so many more properties when I was a kid and gradually they are all disappearing into the sea. Re the 8m on the road sign, it's now 3.4m as of June 2022. The beach itself is lovely but the Cliffs are unfortunately sand on top of clay and till. The rain perculates from the top and the winter waves take from the bottom. The brutal reality is that the sea will win here unfortunately. Did you know in the Domesday book, Happisburgh was well inland and a village called Whimpwell out to the north east? It's well gone now.

We go for holiday to Norfolk every year and love it! The poor people of this lovely town must feel horribly neglected - after the flood surges in the 1950s, which devastated nearby Sea Palling, the gov't spent 100s millions for sea defences to the coast which end halfway between Cart Gap and Happisburgh. The erosion goes from nothing to extreme where the barriers end - with all the money the politicians waste on issues which don't concern us, surely we can re- direct money to save these lovely parts of Britain?

I thought that church looked familiar. It turns out that one of my all time favourite spooky tales from the 1970's was filmed around Happisburgh: The BBC Ghost Story for Christmas production of A Warning to the Curious, made back in 1972. Well worth seeking out if you fancy seeing what it looked like there 50 years ago

The layers of clay viewed from the Sandy beach are like an artist palette, with different shades. And the sounds of the ocean waves, gushing back and forth towards the old wooden sea defences, sound eerie Tim. Although, I suspect where the sea takes land, it replenishes it somewhere else, along Britain’s coastline. 🤔

After years I revisited in 2019 and was shocked to see the tea room and a strip of houses all gone. Hi Mr Walk with me Tim, a quick walkthrough Happisburgh and it was very interesting and picturesque. It's got so much worse since I first visited some 40 years or so ago. The church is a beautiful example. Any, and I mean ANY Government that allows a treasure like this simply to disappear should hang their heads in shame. I know the purse isn't bottomless BUT think, IF this is allowed to 'drop intothe sea', where is next? It is necessary for each Coastal County Administration to check, record, have a study made - one that doesn't take years - and costings done through the UK and new, stronger defences and groynes built to SAVE the UK before it really does become too prohibitive. If we have to pay so be it, and I am just a layman NOT a Millionaire. We ALL have to contribute as much as we can!

I've always considered Happisburgh to be the village that time forgot, with its snickleways and quaint flint built buildings. That beautiful majestic church I have took the time to peramble, my thoughts always turning to the place being like a ghost hunters dream. 😅 Love the lighthouse, always mesmerised by it. Cheers for such a great vid, Tim. 👍😃

Hi Tim I find this very sad to see such erosion. It's awful I wish the government could help to save this beautiful part of the country. I've been coming to Norfolk all my life and my Mums side of the family came from Norwich. They would be so shocked and saddened to see this now . When I look at at Hemsby it really upsets me that the beach is played on as a child is dissapearing 😢. Thankyou for sharing this with us Tim . Give my love to Gaby and Casper. Love to you as always Tracey 💕 xxxx

Morning Tim, love the video, amazing to see the rate of erosion here, beautiful beaches though, I remember seeing the opposite in the isle of man with erosion deposits being washed up the other end of the island and making the beach so large that theres another light house on its beach because the old one is to far inland now . Love to see older pics Tim to compare if possible.

We stayed in a hotel not far from there a few years ago.The dinning room window looked out over around 10 meters of lawn then nothing but a drop down to the beach.Inside the hotel were historic photos of the hotel in its hayday in the 1920's and it showed that space used to be four tennis courts then a lawn before the cliff. So much land lost in just 90 years.I bet that hotel won't be there long.Such a shame!

last time i walked down the beach from Bridlington to the holiday park at Barmston a few years ago i was a little shocked at how much the coast has eroded it there too. i just checked google earth and some vans looks pretty close, and that was in 2018 about the time i last visited, so dont know what it's like now, but there's so much loss on the east coast all over it's really sad, especially for us who love east yorkshire and the coastal path. GL

The village has been falling into the sea for 60 years that I know of. There used to be the remains of the old lighthouse at the bottom of the cliffs.

Superb video Tim, astonishing how much the North sea has devastated this part of Happisburgh. Well done.

I went on a school trip in Junior school to Happisburgh, I can remember seeing a stair case or some structure like that about which was about 2 metres away from the cliff, I dread to think how far away it is now. Also I’ve been up Happisburgh lighthouse a couple of time you get a good view from it

There was a metal staircase years ago but it has not been there for a while now, there used to be a caravan site next to it but that has been moved further into the village as the coast has eroded so much.

I went today September 2022. They have made a new path down to the beach from the car park. So weird walking left along the Norfolk coast path, where the roads and footpaths disappear over the edge. Found out it was the caravan park long since gone, but still on the photograph. Lovely village.

Yes the caravan park has been moved into the centre of the village.

You wanna come down to Cornwall and see the lizard lighthouse ,it's best to visit when it's really foggy as you get to hear the fog horn .first time I took the wife it was really foggy and the horn sounded and she leapt out of her skip so funny 🤣

enjoyed the video but I noticed that you didn't shut the gate after leaving the church - it was closed when you got there so you should have closed it when you left - first rule of the countryside, Tim!

Just watched a video of here that was uploaded 6 days ago & that last house on the left has been demolished cos you can see that behind where the house stood, it's already gone & the barrier that stated the 8m from the edge has also gone. It's half way down the cliff. So that 8 meters went in 1 year. So very sad to see.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yes it's completely gone & I did what other people have done in the comments & looked at street view. It's crazy to see how many properties used to be on that road. I feel so bad for all of those home owners 😕
