#Popeye90
NOTE: I'm very much aware that Popeye's 90th Birthday was yesterday, but I was actually made this whole entire video yesterday but it was late by the time I finished it, and I don't upload a video late at night so I decided to upload it today.
90 years ago, on January 17, 1929, a soon-to-be cartoon star made his official debut in a daily King Features Comic Strip called "Thimble Theater" as a middle-aged, one-eyed sailor man who we now know as Popeye the Sailor Man. Years later in 1933, that sailor man advanced from the comic strips to the animation industry when he made his auspicious debut in a Betty Boop cartoon and went on to star in more of his own theatrical animated escapades and became one of the most recognized and famed classic cartoon characters of the 20th century, rivaling even the likes of Mickey Mouse (and you know that means a character's REALLY famous.)
Popeye the Sailor, a man who uses his fists of justice to battle wrong-doers and archenemies like Bluto and Brutus and to rescue his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, but not without the aid of his trusty can of spinach. Yep, he's pretty much the only classic cartoon character to teach kids the importance of a healthy diet. XD
I grew up with Popeye the Sailor and his classic cartoons. Hell, when I traveled to Africa when I was a kid, THAT'S when I first got exposed to the slap-happy sailor with an old DVD featuring a lot of his famed classics. From Betty Boop to Ali Baba to Aladdin to the Navy to World War II to being played by Robin Williams to the Sea Hag to getting rejected in favor of a movie about emojis, Popeye's been around the world, entertaining kids and adults alike and definitely making lots of childhoods. Next to Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, Popeye the Sailor is a classic toon that I'm very proud to have spent part of my childhood with. Though he's not doing much nowadays in terms of cartoons and shows and he doesn't really adapt to the 21st century as well as all the other cartoons, he's still relevant in the hearts of those who have watched him when they were kids, and especially today when we're celebrating the great history of this groundbreaking cartoon star.
Happy 90th Birthday to the man who's strong to the 'finach, 'cuz he eats his spinach, he's Popeye the Sailor Man! toot-toot!
Enjoy this tribute! =)
