I saw ROC twice in concert. It was a thrill. During those wildest parts I counted SEVEN people playing electric guitar including Lyle Mays! By the way this song won a Grammy for Rock Instrumental.

I saw the Metheny Group perform this entire album, start-to-finish with no interruptions (at the start, he said, "OK, I'll see you on the other side"), at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. Then, at the conclusion of "Imaginary Day," Pat put his guitar down and gave his thoughts about each song, from the last to the first, in a continuous stream of thought. 'What a mind. And then, the show continued.

The first part of the piece seems to be mainly a Metheny composition and the second part (orchestral sounds primarily on the synth) seems to be Mays's writing. Initially the Jazz/rock versus the orchestral and ambient sounds may seem incongrous but it works really well. The whole album is beautifully produced so you can hear every nuance of the instruments comparing and contrasting. The "chorus" reminds me of Nirvana.

When I get mad and need a release, I put this song in my car, turn the volume up to 100 and scream to the top of my lungs on the "wildest parts" as was coined by Scooter. It works, try it sometime. I called this my screaming song.

Memories that come to mind.is Pat Matheny in his Berklee days, when he was 19-20?, csitting in with the Gary Burton quartet. He would also play duets at coffee house venues with the Burtons main guitarist. Once the duet was playing in Somerville and the table I was at was knee jerk close to them. I've been a fan ever since. This CD I play all the time. Thank you for your review.

Metheny is not afraid to really experiment and even alienate his audience in the process. Which shows he's making music for himself....whether anyone else likes it or not.....which is a musical artist in complete creative control of what they produce.

I was hoping you'd get to this. The real secret sauce to this tune is Lyle Mays's orchestrations in the final half. Any time you hear anything that is unabashedly cinematic - that's Lyle. Pat is astounding, but his PMG work with Lyle is on another plane altogether. I've seen ROC live 8 times - 5 on the ID tour, two for SoN, and once on TWU. Each time was just pure thunder and beauty. If want to check out more of Pat's "out-there" metallic leanings, the tunes "Offramp," "Faith Healer," "Back-arm & Blackcharge," "Endangered Species," "Scrap Metal," and "Mastema." If you want to go off the deep end, there's the Zero Tolerance For Silence and Sign Of 4 albums. Consider yourselves warned. ;-)

Had the pleasure of seeing this tour. It's the one where Pat played an acoustic guitar which had 20 strings or so displaced all over the guitar. This is also the only Metheny song where he played a guitar which sounded distorted and the speaker stack on the stage actually shook like a Van Halen gig. And please tell the dude who makes these requests to request Facing West for you won't understand the man that is Pat Metheny unless you delve into this song.
@ChrisEchoes

Fun part of this tour was the fact that pretty everone on stage at some point was playing guitar on this song except for the drummer :-)... Yes even Lyle Mays was playing guitar in the heavy section and was even standing up playing one.

have always thought PMG was the most accessible version of all his groups. You're getting closer to The Truth Will Always Be! :). Pat is not afriad to experiment. Hope you someday encounter his Pickcasso, a 42-string guitar. . BTW, the two of you are such a team! So much fun to watch you riff off of each other. Seems like Nick's strength/contribution is in getting and explainging the musical skill, techniqu and composition, and Lex's strengh/contribution is discussiong the context/feeling, what the piece is doing/saying. LIke Lex is trying to share what she thinks the musicians are trying to say, and Nick is telling you how he thinks the musicians are trying to say it. Good catch on the Hans Zimmer likeness. ZImmer has just finished the sountrack for the upcoming Denis Villeneuve Dune movie, he created 3 albums worth for it. Really going to be something

That is a remarkable tune! Great that you acknowledged how different this is. Pat said in the 1970's that he never wanted to get into the 'rut' of having to make new music that sounded like previous stuff. His scope of improvisation includes that he considers all of his (now huge) catalog of music to be one long "track" and the journey from the beginning is one soundtrack. He wants the "journey" to be as interesting and often surprising as possible. You should check out two versions of the same title, "Question and Answer". One from the Pat Metheny Trio studio record, and another from Trio -> Live. Both are great, the latter (especially how it ends) is amazing!! Yes, for Imaginary Day he came up with symbols as alphabet. The code of the symbols to letters was on the original CD. Guess he likes an audience with functional brain cells! Always great to watch your first impressions. Keep exploring!!

Quote: "As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is a collaborative album by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, released in 1981. The title makes reference to Wichita Kansas, and Wichita Falls, Texas. The title tune is just under 21 minutes." Saw Pat Metheny in solo performance at McCabes (in Sta Monica, Cali) back in the day, and he was truly amazing!

This is what happens when jazzmen get bored listening to this horde of rock /hard rock bands who play 98% of their career on 4 chords pro piece. And that reaction of them got an emmy for ... Rock instrumental. Their last reaction, was a reaction, "kind of a protest record. About how everything is getting shorter and shorter and smaller and smaller and less ambitious and less detailed and less nuanced, and how the world is just crumbing in its aesthetic ambitions". That reaction is named «The Way Up». The last album for the Pat Metheny Group.

I'm getting a bit of a Kraftwerk vibe in parts, excellent and interesting music. Loving y'all's reactions, the attention to details, really trying to sort through the lryics, pointing out the drops & transitions, and your own interpretations of what the song conveyed to you. Might I suggest; "Cat Stevens" - a prolific singer/songwriter with a unique and iconic voice that touches the soul. His catalog of greatest is filled with many wonderful heart felt gems, I recommend 1st; Father & Son, about a conversation betwen a somber father and his teenage son that is full of anger wanting to break out on his own. Others to consider Hard Headed Women, Peace Train, Wild World, If You want to Sing Out, Moonshadow. You're sure loved him, I guarantee or your money back.

Tiny inner, stubborn, disorders (roots) adiding to each other and culminating to bigger and often violent disorder (only apparently coincidence).

If you ever start a band, "So Many Crickets" is an awesome band name.

@@biskygiver You are right. Others such as Stranger in Town, It's For You, and Sueno Con Mexico are amazing. But to me, Last Train Home defines Pat Metheny.

Play this for the troglodytes that call Pat Metheny's work "elevator music".

Hey there NicknLex hope you're doing well I know I'm on the wrong reaction but I just saw your take a pebble reaction and I have to say Nick your face says volumes about your appreciation in music you almost cried dude LOL but truth be told that man is the best keyboardist I've ever heard or ever seen I literally saw him play a classical piece of music and without missing a note went from sitting at the his bench to Standing On Top of the piano and playing it backwards that is no s*** and it wasn't some simple piece of music either I can appreciate your appreciation of that last year just plain enjoyed this wonderful peace Nick you have to admit even you were impressed by his ability nobody else played that way enjoy watching you two please consider playing Eric Clapton the core or Joe Walsh and the James gang Stop.. or Queen Great king rat. No one has done these songs and they are all killer last but not least you should try out Wishbone Ash still playing music 50 years later discovered by Deep Purple twin guitar heaven originals along with the Allman Brothers try lifeline they're still touring thanks for the consideration guys love it yes again let me know if you need any jewelry
