Happy Birthday in 8 Jazz Styles

To understand the distinctions between jazz styles, my elementary students heard the familiar song, "Happy Birthday", each week, arranged in the various jazz styles they learned about chronologically through the 20th century.

I always tried to understand the different styles. Now I have a better picture. But in General Jazz seems pretty much to be playful around the notes and give them your Personal stamp;-)

Wow this is really good! There’s many “in different styles” videos and they’re entertaining but this is the one I’d actually give to someone educationally. It’s accurate but listenable and full of life. My only wish would be for more styles to be included but I recognize the time effort attention to detail that was required to make even this. 🙏

Seriously AMAZING!!! This kind of talent is way over the top !! As a keyboardist with fairly limited skills in the Jazz field(good but not great) ..this just got me sooo pumped!!! So at the tender age of 75...& a Greatgrmother ..its time to get in some serious practicing !!! I'm inspired..thx thx !!! PS ...now having said all that...I must brag a bit & say that I can give Elton John a run for his money !!! (Just sayin) Lol lol !!

Very good! I think it is extremely effective to use the same song to explain different genres / different styles. The only mistake is that the song “Happy birthday” is in 3/4, not in 4/4!!!

So basically each style have the main rythm driven by a different instrument. Is that a fair assessment? (I take into account the tempo, time signature, the different instruments and orchestrations)

Yeah there are a few different angles to view it from. Another one is that the styles seemed to be a reaction against the most recent style in both size of the ensemble and degree of emphasis on improvisation vs arrangement/composition. Early Jazz - few players, greater emphasis on improvisation, not so much arrangement Swing - more players, more emphasis on arrangement, not so much improvisation Bebop - fewer players, greater emphasis on improvisation, not so much arrangement Cool - more players, more emphasis on arrangement, not so much improvisation (this one is less clear, because there were cool jazz groups that were smaller and didn't play /Gil Evans-style arrangements) Hard Bop - fewer players, greater emphasis on improvisation, not so much arrangement
