I feel like most really misunderstood this movie. Like my theater was so confused why me and my friend were laughing but Haneke meant for a good deal of this movie to satirize his films. It’s like a master looking upon his works and going “okay now for a silly one!” and I love it.
Seems like either an homage or a middle finger to the ending of Beau Travail. Both feature men reaching a breaking point during a dance routine in front a mirror, however Haneke made the braver choice to use a much more diagetic sound, removing any artificial emotion the song could create. The camera is also interesting placed directly in front of the mirror, perhaps a tease to Claire Denis on the level of perfection Haneke can achieve
@@diegoorozco4310 in Beau Travail, the camera is filming the dance at an angle where the camera would never appear in the frame. In Happy End, the camera is directly in front of the mirror where it should be reflected. It's been a while since I left this comment but I'm sure I was saying that Haneke made a similar scene in a way that would be inherently more complicated to shoot and I (edit[think]) this may be a challenge to Claire Denis as far as co-ordinating a shot
