Adrian. If the Banshees ever do one of those reunion tours where they play Kaleidoscope, Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse in their entirety, I hope they have your number. I have heard lots of players cover John Mcgeoch over the last 40 years and I've never heard anyone get as close as you in these videos in sound, tone, style, technique and that smooth and fluent way he played. You are paying him a great tribute.
@mindtpi

I've actually heard lots of times their post-McGeoch guitarists didn't even play them this well (or even correctly). Hopefully there won't be any reunion tours though, Siouxsie's voice is well and truly shot unfortunately

Brilliant song and representation of it, the Banshees around this era were so blessed musically with both McGeoch and Budgie being arguably the most talented guitarist and drummer respectively of that generation. 'Kaleidoscope' thru to 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse' are just incredible as examples of how to record powerful rock music yet not turn everything up to 11, and for me tha'ts almost 100% down to those two and knowing the golden rule of music that when everything's loud, nothing is loud.

Being an old git, I have a 1979 Yamaha SG1000. Unlike the Eastwood, it has coil taps by push-pulling the tone controls (but that's probably incidental). The MXR Flanger is crucial to the sound. Nothing else sounds like that pedal. McGeoch used to have it on a stand, where he could move the controls duiring a performance. I particularly remember a live version of 'Voodoo Dolly' where he used it to manipulate a frightening and epic sound. I had one and (story of my life) I really regret selling it. But at least I still have the Yamaha.

Great work! I think McGeoch had only a flanger pedal, otherwise he used his Rolnd Jazz Chorus 120 amp to get chorus, and a tube amp (I don't remember which one, maybe Vox AC 30) to get overdrive. Please do other Cure, Banshees, Bauhaus songs and also some Bunnymen, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, The Church, Cocteau Twins, Bad Seeds/Birthday Party...

Apparently, he rigged his flange to a mix stand so he could adjust it while playing. I’ve also read that he used compression along with the flanger.

Incredible song. Great guitar on it too. I read Mark King Of Level 42 said that he was influenced by McGeoch and the repeated guitar loop on “Children Say” was a nod to him. Brian May of Queen also mentioned his playing in an interview in the early 80s.

Absolutely brilliant deconstruction. This song alone demonstrates the brilliance and genius of John McGeoch. The best incarnation of the Banshees after John McKay and Jenny Morris left. Mark 1 Banshees were fantastic but John McGeoch took them to another level.

Thanks so much for this. I've always loved John McGeoch playing so have played this for years. I find the second three harmonics are better played on the B and E strings 7th fret then the B 9th fret (plucking close to the bridge). Rings much clearer! Thanks again!
@acpg

Thanks Pat. Yes, I agree those 9th fret harmonics are tough to get to ring properly. It seemed to me from videos that JM was playing them at the 9th fret, so I went for that. Your way is probably better though!

McGeoch used two amps, which solves your problem. He used a Roland jazz chorus with a Marshall. This helped give him, along with his flanger, ( Which he always had perched on the top of a Mic stand), and the built in Jazz chorus, chorus sound, his unique sound.

Adrian without your channel idk if I would have maintained my interest in guitar. You hear this from so many I’m sure but your music selection is very refreshing and very in line with the genres I enjoy. Would you ever consider doing something from Modest Mouse’s ‘The Lonesome Crowded West’? I feel like it’s right up your alley and Isaac Brock’s aggressive, rhythmic playing on that record is a big inspiration to me. Just a humble suggestion :) love the channel and your choices are always prime.
