This little-known module seems to promise the impossible: Take the output of any two oscillators (or even just one oscillator - sawtooth wave preferred), patch them through this, and get voltage-controllable through-zero linear FM effects from the output - with four different waveforms. But that’s what it does, simulating a form of FM known as phase modulation. It’s a bit on the buzzy side, but it does indeed produce a wide range of easily-controllable sounds.
The video breaks down like this:
00:00 extended demo
03:14 overview
03:54 calibration
04:15 waveforms
05:15 self-modulation
05:51 adding a separate modulation oscillator
07:12 enveloping the modulation depth
08:18 FM’ing the modulation depth
08:47 exploring different frequency ratios
09:42 feedback patching

Great, worth having, compact and packs lots of colors.

love this one for FM/PS duties! But it's also one of my favorite distortions in my euro, with exxelent results on drums , among other things!! Very versatile and yummy sounding module! 💚

sokoleski can you elaborate on how you use it to distort drums? :)

I just got this! I still am kind of baffled by the implementation of the waveshaping, but am looking forward to making a proper phase modulation algorithm with two distings and a dixie II+!

I found out today that if you put a signal in the modulation input with nothing in the carrier input you get classic wave folding on the sine and triangle output and the saw output is reminiscent of the abstract data wave boss. What a fun module.

Very good channel Chris super clear and deep explanations. I'm currently depeloping an analog module very similar to this one and i was thinking how the FM aid respond to low frequency modulations. If you were to make a video with fm aid again could you try this for me? thank you very much and keep it up !!!

brilliant.

Wait but the output is always one of the four waveforms at the bottom? I don't get how there are three waveforms (carrier/modulator/output) in this setup, I always thought that carrier=output

Hi Chris. Fantastic video. I don't suppose you'll see this 4 years down the line, but, if you do, how have you set up Mordax Data for this one?

Hi, Rory - the cables going to the FX Aid match the color of the traces on DATA. The green trace on the DATA (the sawtooth at 3:37 of the video, for example) is patched to the Carrier input on FX Aid, and the blue trace (the triangle) is the modulator. The yellow trace - the sine wave at 3:37 - is the output of the FX Aid. (The black patch cable going to the DATA is just to synchronize it with the main oscillator, to make the display more coherent.) If you watch the video from about 3:30, some of this is explained there. Hope that helps!

@@LearningModular Thanks, Chris. So kind of you to reply - so quickly. Great to understand. It's an amazing moule for so little, and I'm only scratching the surface thus far.

This seems to be similar to the WMD phase displacement oscillator which is 1 oscillator with 3 phase modulation wave shapers

Interesting - I didn't know the details of the WMD's PD design. Does the WMD sound as "bright" as this?
@edjwise
@edjwise 6 лет назад
Yea, it gets sort of brittle and harsh on the top end. if I recall it is more than 360* of phase shifting.

Interesting, when they made the DX7 they heavily biased the modulation index to the 180°

@DivKidVideo Yes, but no oscilloscope, man!

probably buzzy because it uses triangle waves instead of sine
