Harbor Freight Air Horn wiring made easy (or other accessories with independent switch)

So I searched the internet trying to find some information on how to wire the air Horn. I'm not a huge electronic major, despite that the instructions did not look right.. After running across some other information out there i was able to come up with a solution.
NOTE: this is when using a momentary switch and not your original car horn as a switch, (in your steering wheel, normally)
These instructions are not only for an air horn, they can also be used for other things, such as Fog lights or other accessories. You would just have to use the proper switch. A rocker switch for the Fog lights for example.
Another thing to note about this video, is that the horn will always be hot. As in just like your regular car horn, with the car off and the key out, the momentary switch will always be able to activate the air horn...
If you do plan on using the Built in Led on a switch that has LED back lighting, keep in mind that if you take that Positive (+) pole on the momentary switch straight to the battery it will always be on. I don't recommend that. Try and find a wire that goes hot with your headlights, or your key on position. If you utilize a key on position for that pole, then it will be on during the day. It will not drain your battery though. However, it's an LED, uses very little electricity...

It's fantastic it took me 2 days to figure out that Harbor freight schematic. I'm done I haven't tried it yet nor is it hooked up to the positive battery yet. but then I see your video. ugh I'm gonna start all over. So frustrating their schematic was here's look so much easier thank you so much

I bought an air horn for $10 today thinking this was a steal of a deal. I found out I Needed an in-line fuse holder, fuses( cause ya know you’re going to pop a few during install). And a horn button. Ok ,trip to the hardware store! After looking at the directions I thought not too hard right? Holy F##k! After 6 hrs of trying to get it to work and watching RU-vid videos all day from the most technical to the 3rd world hard to understand guys I found your video. And to think I just needed to jump the two connections with the horn button in line. I wish I would have seen your vid first.

That's why I place emphasis in the idea that we are completing the ground on this circuit. If the circuit and or really wasn't being utilized to complete the ground then jumping would not be the solution. Hopefully you don't bust any fuses during the install, that shouldn't happen. I'd say having to buy a switch is pretty normal as well. Good luck with the install, I had success with mine. Perhaps I should load a video of that.

Well that was more helpful than the first video I watched. Terminal 87 is a no brainer. I decided to first try it your way with the jumper between 86 and 30 to my Upfitter switch positive power, and then 85 to negative ground and it worked. Now I’m wondering if the reason they had 86 to original vehicle horn power was really to charge /turn on compressor the air compressor before using the horn button or in my case my upfitter switch to control the horn when ready to on 87. Anyhow, I temporarily have my relay power to the battery, and tomorrow I will connect it to a switches source of power so it can’t drain my battery on my F-350 diesel truck.

I am using a button switch. Were would the other end of of the switch get wired to.

How many prongs are coming out of the button switch?? Are you going to wire it the same way the horn in the video is wired? (Completing the ground circuit) does your button switch have an LED?

Are you referring to the test when I just had it on the countertop?, I just wired it to the negative post on the battery. So the momentary switches on the ground portion of the relay in between the relay and the negative battery post

Does your compressor automatically start when you start your car, or is that a separate switch??

So the compressor only operates when the momentary switch is pressed. Not too confuse with it being hot wired to the bettery. So the ignition need not be turned on.. it's just like your car horn in that if you're in the car, it's dark and the ignition is off.. It still works

@@hesson81if there is a leak will the compressor run when the car is off? Sorry... just askin... or is that part of the switch? Monetarily switch is the glowing light you press by the dash, correct? Harbor freight comes with a swich also.... idk

86 is if you want your horn switch on your steering wheel to operate both car and air horns....Learn how to read schematics....You disconnect or pig-tail the positive wire from the manufactured car horn and connect it to 86....the switch will operate w/o car horn.... READ the Instructions my God it tells you right there.

I did a different set up but with your horn switch. The light stays on without the key in the ignition. I know you wanted to fix that to head lights... any luck? I have a new tundra dont wanna drain the battery. Thinkn of making all positives into one line, ideas?

Yes I did. I was able to find an old tap that was going to my headlight parking lights, so I grabbed that wire ran it under the dash, and into the switch. The LED only comes on when I have parking or headlights on now. It worked out great.

I bought this cause it was cheap and I can’t even hear it from in the truck so I ripped it out and got a horn blasters musket horn way louder

Once you wire it you can just replace components.. the wiring is the hardest part.. glad you have something louder on the way!!

Ha...just went through this crap. I did electronics..and automotive work. Looked at it and went WTF? Yea..the relay is pure junk. Used a relay from the Wolo kit I have.

Umm if your a 2 I’m gonna go ahead and return mine before in i try and blow my car up. What your saying makes some sense but never in a million years could I replicate it. I think I should just return mine :(

I just spent an extra 10 bucks and got one with extra dbs and a little better quality. And yes better to do it now then install the harbor freight and it break . Same wiring once you install the components.
