I have put together a review video of the Harbor Freight Flux 125 Welder Item#63582. This has replaced my older Harbor Freight welder. I ended up building a gate for our house and this thing turned out to be just the right tool for the job. As for my older harbor freight welder, it was a great workhorse for me. I made so many things from car bumpers to roll cage parts, suspension parts, custom scooters, bike frame welding.. So much stuff. In transport it got damaged and the spool axle thing broke. Also, the switch for the trigger started acting up. It gave me about 15 years of work, the first 10 of those 15 were intense use. Anyway, this video, check it out, let me know what you think.
Check out the welder at harbor freights website here: www.harborfreight.com/flux-12...

I have the older blue machine and have modified it alot, use a 10lb spool after cutting out the lid and moving the mount, converted to DC with caps so it's heavier now but less splatter and better penetration, reversed polarity, put a fan in it and wired it so the wire feed motor gets power before the coil instead of after the coil so no more feed speed drops, it's decent now lol, there is a bunch of videos of people converting these to DC etc, it's worth doing

I got one of these and sat it in my garage for half a year. I had no idea how to use it and it looked intimidating to open and use, so I sat it around like probably a lot of you did. This guy makes it easy and straight forward to use. Good radio voice and entertaining to watch. Thank you for this really good video.

I've had this 125 for several years. It was my first welder and at the time was a great welder. Since, I've gotten a newer more durable name brand machine and it's as silky as a new Cadillac. Moral of the story, any welder beats no welder. Get what you can, but also get what you NEED.

I've bin welding since 1998 and have used many different machines,big one's mostly gas but even flux core rods. I just recently purchased the 125 you have on here to weld my front custom fencing for my wall and stone pillers. I have to say I was very sceptical about this tiny welder. But to my surprise it did very well on the 3/16 steel gate. It was just simply a matter of setting the appropriate wire speed and temp then getting the hand speed and movement to match the setting. So I'm very happy with it and the price was good I paid $119 but I'm getting a price change next month but it's going on a one month sale for $85. That make it all even better. It's a keeper.👍👍👌

Same thing for me. I've had mine for over 5 years without issues but I did already have a self darkening shield also bought at HF. One tip for making better looking fillet welds at butt joints and for filling minor gap is to run a "J" weave stringer. This pulls the puddle back and up and then carries the puddle down without burning through. I was a certified welder in the nuclear power plant world for about 10 years and it makes for a better looking weld as well. I enjoyed your video!

Argon. Acetylene is for cutting. If you can afford to weld with gas and/or need to have pretty welds, especially on sheet metal, get a mig with variable voltage control. You'll love it. A flux without variable voltage will only piss you off.

While I have some good past experience in acetylene/oxygen & old school DC stick welders I'm new to this flux core wire welding. Will be trying to fit together a broken area of solid maybe quarter inch tube frame on a lawn mower where the grass catcher attaches & hopefully will be able to make it "stick" together. Check FB market man. You can get em in the box for half the shelf price. For the price, they work pretty dang good. But eventually you might want to move to gas so it isn't as "slaggy". But you really can't beat these 125 machines if you can get it for 80 or even 100 bucks. Just my opinion.

I'm still using Dad's old Lincoln buzz box he bought 75 years ago. Fortunately he put a wheelbarrow tire kit on it to move around on the roughest of terrains as well as 20' leads, but I might have to jump for something lighter like this. Too bad the cables are so short on this HF125 that you have to set it on top of your work.

I’m in welding school right now, first arc I ever struck was on one of these. You can’t really make a lot of weld fast because the duty cycle isn’t great on them, but it does indeed make welds and the skill of the arm can make the beads look semi decent.

A great and honest review, I used to have a very similar welder for many years and it was great at what it did. However, I found the things it didn’t do such as aluminium and cast iron very frustrating. The respirator is really important and is rarely mentioned in videos, I'll also wear a welder's jacket though sparks still get down my neck somehow. A welder is one of those tools the average D.I.Y.er doesn’t use every week but nothing else will do when one is needed, not even JB Weld. Pre Covid19 there were lots of Polish/German machines on the market here in the U.K., the machine I got is a 200amp MIG/Flux/MMA/Brazing (I stick to my gas for that) for a very reasonable price. Unfortunately the price of new tools are going through the roof here in the U.K. whilst second hand have through the floor. I like the level of control it gives and I can weld just about any material including aluminium and cast iron and can hold most thicknesses.

Also I have been using on a 15 amp breaker. Not heavy use just practicing (with a 50’ 12ga extension cord too). No breaker trips yet. Still planning the outlet upgrade very soon.
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 6 лет назад
Its a small world huh!? You will see a very large increase if you ditch that extension cord and get a 10ga. Im not kidding. I think HF says NO to extension cords in general for these but i cant remember. Also, that 15 amp breaker is probably OK for short runs (of time). It just cant run under full load for any long duration or it will pop the breaker, or if your breaker is simply larger but the wire isn't upgraded too, you can start a fire more likely. Be safe. If you run out if wire and are gonna keep welding, the larger reel of .035 is a choice i will never regret. But i do have the power behind it at the plug. Thanks for the comment!
@walter2670
@walter2670 6 лет назад
TRY to HELP you yes the extension cord was a one time deal for a repair. Definitely will wire a 20 amp with some 12ga. Shed outlets should’ve been that way to begin with.. big roll of .035 is on the shopping list. Have you purchased from eBay? Prices are way cheaper than HF, and I’m betting similar quality.

I've been using mine 2016 and have had no problems. One of the major drawbacks to this welder is that the amperage isn't adjustable beyond "high" and "low" but that doesn't really matter to me.

Thank you for spending time to demonstrate this welder. You're doing the exact project that I want to use it for. I'd like to see the rest of your gate build if you have it available One note on your welds (I may be mistaken but I've had this happen and an old welder told me what it was). The sputtering and what looked like a little kick back (not to mention the splatter) might be the result of your wire size. This particular machine says that it can use both 0.030 and 0.035 wire but it really is designed for optimized welding with 0.030 wire. That said, however, your welds came out very well regardless of what machine you were using. Your gate motor setup looks pretty good at the end. Again I'd love to see your next video

Bought one returned at a HF tent sale for $75 ($45 for the welder if I bought a $30 ITC membership =$75). Went to .35 wire immediately, I'm a cert welder so jump'n on it was no prob. Really only has 2 good settings. Low + wire around 4, and hi w/wire about 4-6. Runs shitty on anything else, feeder is loud & sounds like it's wanting to die but works well w/the right tension. For $45 you can't beat it, a tip is to buy your wire off Ebay at $4-5 per lb instead of $10 a lb at HF.

The small roll of wire that comes with the welder is truly trash. Don't even try to use it, as it will make you want to kick the whole machine to the curb. I bought the 10 lbs. spool of Italian made wire and WOW what a difference !!! Doing the conversion to make it a DC welder wasn't that hard to do and makes it an even better welder. Yeah, it's a light-duty welder, but you can use it almost anywhere and do a good job. Practice doesn't make perfect...but it makes you better... Fine job on the video, informative and entertaining.

Same. People like myself start to get into bodywork and it doesn't jive. The low voltage is still too hot. You need variable dial that goes lower. And they're usually on mig welders, at which point you might as well give yourself a bigger leg up and get a gas bottle to go with it. I did some exhaust work and it was fine. Not pretty but did the job.

So pretty much what you're saying, is that you won't be using this to make a hitch for the Spark (although you should) and now that I have to buy this, I should just tell my other half that I've always had a welder, she just never noticed it before?
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 6 лет назад
Haha, perfect timing man. Dude, i totally forgot to mention. I built a hitch for my old corolla with my old harbor freight welder and it had no problem towing my 18foot boat. Also towed an 80s suburban (tow strap) for a distance.... just in neighborhood off of a trailer and up the street a ways. I also had airbags that i put in the rear, it was hilarious!, gosh i should have mentioned that... prolly best i didnt. The spark battery is right in the rear, dont know where i would mount.... hadn't looked tho... as for any personal advice..... the truth is always best. This thing can "pay for itself" if things need repairs... keep that in mind :)

We buy tools. They buy clothes and shoes. The difference is that they never miss new items. I’ve always made a habit of never allowing a woman to witness my unboxing of a new tool. The packaging disappears between the store and the house. It’s not dishonest. I know she’s going to notice the new tool. But if she mentions it, I take a long look through her closet.

Pro: This is such a great review. CON: EXCEPT FOR ONE THING??? Why didn't you use the original wire it came with??? because, Yes I am a noobie and it leaves me with questions, Like is that wire garbage and do I need to go out and buy that wire you are using and that means I have to go and buy those tips to accommodate the wire size.. ?? I was thinking about buying this unit today because of sale price.
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 6 лет назад
AmIonArock the wire it comes with is ok. It burns thru it quicker and according to the charts it does not weld the thicker stuff... It will hold u over just fine for regular welding.. I like the bigger wire because I have noticed I can slow down the speed some ... And ... Jeez it's been a couple years... But I think the .030 just doesn't get as hot.... Look it up online and try to download the manual. It will have info on metal thicknesses and what wire size goes with what. All in all, if you have the appropriate outlet you will get good use out of this thing.
@AmIonArock
@AmIonArock 6 лет назад
thanks for the very fast response, I kind od figured out that your a welder and instead of wasting time, you wanted to go to work on your project and you knew the other wire wouldn't be suitable. But what I want this welder for is working on Bicycle customizations stuff like that.
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 6 лет назад
No prob. Sometimes I get the comments when they happen and other times they get by me. U know what? That .030 would have been suitable for my gate. it would have worked fine. the main thing I don't like about small reels is they run out really fast. I didn't want to deal with that... Plus I had the old wire I wanted to use up. Prolly should have mentioned how fast those small reels run out in my review.... Hmm :/
@TRYtoHELPyou
@TRYtoHELPyou 6 лет назад
Anyway, yeah. Should be good for a bike. Make sure u grind the paint off for a better weld.. plus you will need to practice. You will burn hopes in bike tubing easially. Find a throw away frame to practice on. U should be good. The weld will be considerably more ugly than a weld that had migmix gas or straight CO2 .. but it can get the job done.. just keep safety in the front of your mind through the whole process, put in effort, do some more research amd you will succeed!
