Harbor Freight Gordon Bowie Knife Destruction

After trying to find some more information online, and finding nothing helpful, I decided that if I wanted to really see what this knife was made of, I was going to have to eat the cost and destroy a perfectly brand new knife. So my sacrifice wouldn't be in vain, I documented my results for the rest of the world to see. I can't get my $20 back, but figured it might serve the greater good.

This actually did help. Being able to actually look at the construction in my opinion is one good way to actually tell if it would work for someone's needs. Smashing it into a log is like not really as beneficial as taking it apart and really looking at it. So thanks good job.

Appreciate the deconstruction! Good to finally see it. Honestly a lot better than I imagined it would be.

Thank you. Finally someone cuts the thing open. Lots of other reviews by other channels. And they have thousands and thousands of subscribers. You'd think 20 bucks was a mortgage payment. When it comes to a camping knife, I definitely like to see the edges of the tang in the middle of the applied handle scales. In other words, it's nice when there's more metal in the tang that in the blade.

Bottom line for any knife needing situation is that the best knife to have is one you are blessed to actually have in your hand when you really need it.

Something I would throw in a tackle box or tool box just to have a cutting blade. I will buy 2 my next trip near a HF just for those purposes. Thanks for the video.

Bought one two days ago and two one day ago. They’re out of stock locally and it’s day 3. My tank is full of fuel and I might go out of town.

I saw a video a while back that compared this blade to the Buck and this one did all the same things the buck did including cut through copper wire without damaging the edge. It wasn't until he attempted to chop at steel did the blades suffer any damage, and they BOTH took damage. So I think this blade is durable enough based on what I've seen. Harbor freight gets a lot of crap but I own and use quite a few of their tools and have yet to be disappointed. I have a .23 gauge pin nailer that I've used in my business as a carpenter for several years and it's still going strong.

Here's a hilarious observation.....If you want to put a custom handle on a Mora knife blade you've bought you have to pay 30 bucks. But if you want a Mora knife with a handle....then it's 20 bucks. It's like when a shovel handle costs more than a shovel.

Thank you for the quick deconstruction and commentary that got right to the point. No pun intended. I bought one a few weeks ago and it seems like a good knife even though the hardest duty mine will get is opening packages and as a letter opener.

I appreciate the information my friend yeah I'm going to be doing a torture test of mine and I originally was going to do the same thing show the people what is underneath the handle but I appreciate seeing this video I didn't know about it until a friend of mine told me about it I appreciate the information keep up the good work

Good video. Agreed about other videos, even cheap knives can hold up to moderate tests a time or two, seeing the guts (and knowing the handle isn’t just a brittle piece of plastic) helps. $25 for a beater camp knife that you don’t care if it’s lost, broken, dropped in the fire (yeah it happens), is a decent deal. Hitting HF today to grab one. Thanks! Cheers!🍺🥃

There pocket knife ain't bad for 8 bucks either. It's 8cr13mov and seems to have a decent heat treat. It's on bearings too.

Thank you for this teardown. Alot of great info for a short video. I keep looking at this whenever I go to harbor freight and even though the price has gone up its still a consideration. Given that ive spent $50 on a civivi, I think ill pick this up the next time I'm in. Ill subscribe so I hope you have more insight in the future. Thanks for the great video.
@richardjusticejustusoutdoo8323
Now tear apart a buck and compare! Also what steel is in this blade? Compared to buck. How many slices through a durable substance can each blade do before it just won't cut anymore. Next, strap them both in a vice, side by side and bend until breaking.

Sure, if you're willing to send me the knives, I'd be happy to.

The buck is just as weak. Seen it done. If you know how to use a knife like a woodsman and not a green horn, then they are both fine knives.

Would help to know blade metal and how it compares to other metals for strength, holding an edge, etc. it’s likely made of mid- to low-quality blade alloy, but who knows? I think the packaging lists the blade alloy. I believe this knife includes a decent quality leather sheath.

It's a hunting knife just like the Buck knife. Skin deer, quarter deer, it was never meant to beat up. Smack through pelvic bone is another use. I'd say it would do just fine in that scenario.

Thanks for the video. I wondered about the tang. I would have enjoyed seeing the hammer blows to the handle. Now I know and was somewhat pleasantly surprised. I'll probably never use my Buck or the Harbor Freight version to abuse as I have many others to beat on. To me that would not be their purpose, but that's just me. Thanks for sacrificing the $20! My last thought on these is poor quality control in China, meaning you may get a good one or you may get a dud.

Buy one and beat on it with a hammer. It will break but at least it will be entertaining which most of youtube-asses really want to see anyway.

Using the undamaged components, do you plan to replace the broken handle & make a new knife? I appreciate what you did, but I personally do not have $20 to waste!

better then those hollow handle rambo knives, but i would still end up breaking this under hard use that a mora can take.

Perhaps I wasn't as clear as I should've been. In my opinion, this knife is suitable for lighter duty tasks and household stuff. I would not feel comfortable using this knife as a serious tool for important work, especially if that includes survival tasks where your life, safety, and health might be in jeopardy. I would use this for what it's worth, as a cheap beater blade. I would not stake my life on this knife, as I don't think it would hold up under those conditions. In other words, it's okay... there are some times where a knife that's just "okay" will be all you need, and other times where I would not want to settle for a blade that is anything short of excellent. But this is all the opinion of one person (myself) who is not an expert, and you are free to come to your own decisions about your life. I only made this video to hopefully help people make a more informed decision when shopping. Thanks for your comment.

Indeed. My gosh; it seems like a SURPRISINGLY GOOD knife for the price. And, if you use a SIGNIFICANT amount of J.B. Weld in attaching a new handle, it would probably increase the strength of the tang. People can be so darned PICKY and UNIMAGINATIVE.....

He didn't complain or expect the knife to be anything better than it is in it's current form so I don't understand your question there.
@richardjusticejustusoutdoo8323
So many reviews are completed with their price point snobbery ahead of the actual functional capabilities, relegating the inexpensive imposter to the bottom of the tackle box when it deserves better acknowledgement. Just saying.
