I've got two of these, and yes, during the breaking period, LOTS of metal flakes, and no oil filter to deal with it. They make nice aluminum dipsticks with magnets that I use in mine, in addition to placing a magnet under the fill tube area. They're great units, but you definitely don't want that stuff circulating around. They also work great in parallel to double the output power, but you have to make your own kit as Harbor Freight doesn't offer them yet.

2 in 1 comment. When make a video showing how to do something it would be nice if you said what size the bolts were so anyone watching would know which tools to grab before starting the job. I also noticed a lot of people talking about dipsticks with magnets. I simply take 2 small neodymium magnets (harbor freight sells in tube of 10) and put them right on the drain plug. When you change the oil all the flakes are on the drain plug. Wipe them off before reinstalling the plug after your oil change. Thanks for your videos!

Here are the generator safety tips: This is just a safety reminder 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3) 🔥generators cause fire hazards too. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) generator operation; make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I1jT3ANENvI.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. My Brother has been a Small Engine & Lawn Tractor Mechanic for decades & was a Briggs & Stratton Master Service Technician which may not sound like much but 85% fail the exam lol,... With new budget Chinese Engines, BEFORE adding fuel & starting, he adds about 10% Kerosene to new cheap Oil, puts it into the engine, removes the Spark Plug then spins the engine over as fast as he can, pulling the starter cord about 20 times or using the electric starter for about 10 seconds,... This splashes the light oil/kerosene mix around the engine to clean it. He then drains the oil/kerosene, refills with cheap oil, runs the engine for a minute or two then replaces that oil,... He has noticed that the Chinese Engines these days are not as dirty as they used to be.

One hour hell. Because of that metal flake oil, I’ll change it in 5 minutes and again in an hour. Than maybe again after a half a tank depending on how bad it looked after the first hour. Won’t be putting synthetic until it’s gotten about at least 18 hrs on it. Pennzoil ultra high mileage is about as good as you can get. The high mileage type has a additive to keep the rubber seals from changing because of the synthetic oil. If you do a natural gas or propane make sure you run the engine in real good before you do the conversion. Propane doesn’t have the gritty combustion products to help lap in the rings. You rings may never seat. Just pick up mine this morning at the H.F in Sacramento. They just got five and they were all sold by 8:05 AM. Poof, like magic lol!

Realize that a magnetic dipstick is not a horrible idea but is not a cure-all either. Magnets only attract iron so the aluminum flakes will remain in suspension necessitating frequent oil changes. There is no oil filter because these engines are splash lubricated. Only engines w/ an oil pump (pressure lubricated) will have a filter.

A little early for super slippery synthetic. Do a couple early ones for sure but run Dino minimum 50-100 hours so rings seat in properly.

Those couple of AC's, are you talking window units, not say a 4 ton Trane? Just ran mine for its first 3 hours and after seeing all that metal in your oil am going to change it too. In my three hours ran it on ECO mostly as ran nothing big only lights and internet connections. did switch on a dryer for last 50 minutes and did it off ECO (not sure what it would do if left it on ECO, afraid to learn hard way so did not do it.)

The couple of ACs I was talking about were the two 13,500 BTUs on the RV. I have not tried it on the central AC I plan on doing so but I have a lot of subscribers saying that it did run there 4 ton AC You shouldn’t have any problem running it on Eco mode if you plan on keeping it for a long time that’s all I would run, no need to stress out your generator in wide-open throttle

wow! first video I've seen where I could actually see the metal pieces in the oil. For my duromax, it recommends the first oil change after 20hours or 1 month, but I see you are doing it after 2 hours (assuming I heard right) for this Predator? I'm guessing this early oil change is to take care of this metal issue, right? Would a magnetic dipstick (as mention by a previous commenter) help extend this break in period?
@GeneratorReviews
@GeneratorReviews 2 года назад
Yep!! The earlier you change the oil and get that metal out of the generator gotta be better for the long-term use but the funny thing is I tested that metal with a magnet and it looks to be aluminum shavings none of that metal would stick to the magnet.

Hey Gavin curious which you would choose. A used predator 9500 with 150 hours or a new a-ipower 7100 if you can get them both for the same price of $1100. Both will handle my 120v load of around 40 amps.

Well the Predator probably has no warranty on it and the AI power is dual fuel. I guess if I needed the extra power I would get the Predator but the Ai power is not as powerful or time tested as the Predator

What are the metal flakes?
@GeneratorReviews
@GeneratorReviews 2 месяца назад
Metal flakes in an engine oil typically indicate some form of internal mechanical wear occurring within the engine. As engine components like pistons, bearings, and camshafts wear down over time, small metal particles can break off and Ignoring metal flakes in the oil can lead to more severe engine problems and potential failure if left unattended. But in this case, the metal flakes are from the new engine production.

@@GeneratorReviews Now for someone who hasn't done this before, What is the recommended rule of thumb when changing out oil to get all the flakes out? Is it just a process that happens over time with routine Oil Change so you leave some flakes in, or does one fill and empty the oil over and over until all the flakes are gone in one go? Just trying to understand the logic and not over think 😅

So, I am looking at this generator for home backup and have been looking at reviews and documentation. The sticker on the top says to change the oil every 8 hours, the manual says to not exceed 75% load for the break in period of 30 Hours and then change the oil, that's it. Other Predators say to run it for an hour change the oil, run it for another hour change it again and then run if for an hour with a 500 watt load and then change it again. I feel kind of confused, if I do get this generator should I change it three times, once under a small load, then try to keep it under 75% for the first 30 hours while changing the oil every 8 hours?
@GeneratorReviews
@GeneratorReviews 2 года назад
Just follow the manufacturers recommendations you’ll be OK. Don’t feel confused or overwhelmed as long as you change your oil once a year depending on your use, if it falls right around manufacturer recommendation you’ll be all right

I'd say you're pretty lucky to get one that actually runs cause I've had 4 of those generators and not 1 of them has ran don't get me wrong I'm not knocking on Harbor freight I have 2 of the predator 3500 generators and they are awesome but I've had 4 of the 95 hundreds and returned all of them because they won't run 2 of them had no spark and wouldn't even start And the other 2 kept dying and saying 02 sensor bad so I bought another one and was gonna disconnect the o2 sensor And that 1 would not start because it had no spark. Harbor freight should fix this problem before I buy another one considering that 1 considering that they're very hard to find
