In every student's journey, the best thing that can happen to them is that they find a teacher that lays things out just perfectly (for them), that makes them wonder, "Why didn't everyone else explain it that way?" Thank you, sensei! I'll be studying all your videos.

I love these different genres of Jazz explained videos you do. You do a wonderful job of explaining the music. As a late arrival to the world of jazz, I found myself returning to the hard bop genre time and time again over the last 30 years. Thanks again for posting these.

One of the defining aspects of hard bop was the Shuffle rhythm. Many of the Messengers' tunes, as well as Horace Silver's and Jackie MacLean's had a strong shuffle and a heavy backbeat (beats 2&4))... This, I believe, added to its danceability.

Hello ! Wouldn't you consider charles mingus to be a great contributor to hard bop as well ? According to what I've read and listened to, Mingus completely fit in that style while making it not as simple as you may present hard bop in your video. Some of his songs such a better git it in your soul were also composing genius and did not rely that much on improvisation. Would you say he is an exception in this genre in that sense ?

One thing seldom acknowledged is the role drugs play in music. When the supply of heroin into the US underwent a downturn in the early/mid fifties, people (including a lot of musos) went towards speed and cocaine. Just as house got harder and harder in the 90s as more and more ecstasy was cut with speed, so one of the most salient characteristics of truly "hard" bop was its speed and attack.
@joshuapray
@joshuapray 4 года назад
It's seldom acknowledged because it's a myth. Hard bop isn't characterised by speed and attack at all. Bebop, earlier and pre-dating what you've termed the 'downturn' in heroin supply, was considerably more intense and much, much faster. Drugs are the amateur's way of understanding how intense people do great things. Examples: Hendrix had acid in his headband and that's 'why' he played the Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock (myth). Kerouac was whacked on speed and that's 'how' he wrote _On the Road_ in only three weeks (also a myth).

So then, do you consider Jazz Funk a subgenre of Hardbop? Or when you say Soul Jazz would you use that classification interchangeably with the label Jazz Funk? Or how would you describe the difference between the two if you do make a distinction?
@kyleholman7191
@kyleholman7191 4 года назад
Ok. Well I googled this, and what I came up with is that it is fairly common for soul jazz to have vocals in comparison, and jazz funk incorporating the use of analog synthesizers and effects that hadn't been invented yet when the subgenre of soul jazz was born. Any further insight from anyone about this would be appreciated as well.

Dear Walk that bass, You say the difference between bebop and hard bop is dancing. So I searched youtube for hard bop dancing and got nothing, but I got lots for bebop dancing. Please explain.
@WalkThatBass
@WalkThatBass 6 лет назад
I'm afraid many people do not understand the difference between the different subgenres of jazz. For example, this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lb8GG6O8hlI.html is entitled 'Bebop Dancers...' but the music they are actually dancing to is swing music. Paragraph 2 of the wikipedia on Bebop (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bebop) starts: "Bebop developed as the younger generation of jazz musicians expanded the creative possibilities of jazz beyond the popular, dance-oriented swing style with a new "musician's music" that was not as danceable and demanded close listening." I'm sorry to tell you, there are many things on the internet that aren't factually accurate.
@blackandwhitejazz
@blackandwhitejazz 6 лет назад
Of course. But I still want to see just one example of what you would call hard-bop dancing. I have seen Thelonious. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XjJYeCYO-hA.html Is that what you mean? Perhaps you could demonstrate it yourself!
