Yup, found the shorted diode and removed it. Drive powered up DVR worked, got the video (good high def stuff too) and our bad guy was nice enough to make a few appearances too, hoping for an ID soon!

PCB needs adaptation in order to work with the different drive. There is drive specific firmware on PCB (most of the time inside of the eepROM) that has to be either transferred or copied out and programmed into the new PCB. Otherwise, it will not work. Sometimes it will click, sometimes the drive is just going to load kernel mode.

If the drive in a damaged state is completely silent, you can try a donor board to see if it will spin it. Just listen to it for, and as soon as you can hear the movement, you can safely assume that the original PCB is damaged.

Seized motor and stuck heads would still produce a faint sound upon start. Dead PCB and dead preamp would keep your drive totally silent

Thanks for reply. I try to record it with my smartphone but it was unable to record it. Smartphone mic is not really suitable for that low noise. But i "sort of" record it with my PC and well "better mic" that was directly attached with duct tape to the "do not cover hole" of that HDD. The sounds is like: Rrepeating the motor start 1. pulse for spin up but withim the 1 second interval it repeat forever...no auto turn off. I can even feel the force on housing from plater failed to full spinup. I can send you that recording (for analyze) I was hoping it will be something like just stuck head (as it was in external enclosure) but as i can hear that will require pro repairing... I live in eastern europe... so there is no help for me... (at least in my country).

The Smartphone only record the typical start buzz that all my old WD HDD do before the spin up but nothing else just silence and surrounding noises. So i find your video here but as i do more research I find out that my human ear hear something after the buzz so i boosted the PC mic over +24db for PC can hear that too...

As long as hard drives are compatible, yes. I recommend not to try it yourself if data is important. Without experience and proper tools you will lose data forever

after that sequence of events, I would say it is safe to assume that you killed it

pads on the motor (chassis side) are in short? or the PCB? If PCB, then you probably have the spindle controller (SMOOTH chip it top right) burnt. Swap out the board and move U12 eepROM over to the donor board

@@hddrecoveryservices wow fast reply! No, shorted on chassis side. I think that is what is causing shorts on the PCB all four pads shorted to each other, even with PCB removed. So when I plug in, the electricity goes through board but cannot go to the spindle because of the short

Easiest way to test motor is to slap a working PCB on the drive and power it.

no, not the firmware. clicking on these drives means only one thing - dead heads. Average cost $900-1200USD to swap it and pull data out

ibrahim jabbar heads are stuck on disk. Fairly easy to do you are equipped for it but is even easier to damage the drive if you are not. I would recommend to contact a recovery company and ask when they charge in this case.

If the drive does not spin, then most likely it got power surged.

I’m going to take this in to a recovery service . Can you please tell me what I should say that would help me save some cost in the repair? I believe it was a power surge. And I would love to be able to save some cost in this process

Hi Rory,I will dig out a couple of these for you on Monday from my stock, and check the swapping capabilities of these boards and get back to you. This is an older U5 type seagate, there is a chance there is no adaptation needed on them

It probably not going to cause any further damage, but it would now work because of ROM content. There are many different versions of ROM for the same PCB number even with identical revision. You can have 2 identical hard drives side by side and their boards (without adaptation) are not going to be interchangeable.

direct board swap without any firmware adaptation would not work. If firmware is adapted then swapping the board is fine

you have firmware in the board and you have firmware on the disk, they have to match to work together. if you use a board off the different drive firmware on the board is not gonna match what is on the disk, so the drive will not initialize. Adaptation process preps the board to match firmware to the disk

this is a typical issue for both Seagate and WD drives. Most likely, it is firmware related

I have elgato capture card already, just need to wire up this computer to it.

these diodes work as protection. If the power surge hits the drive they absorb the impact. Removing them will remove the short (if it is there), but it will leave the drive with no protection for the next surge. Something that vital will get fried if the drive gets hit by surge again without them in place

check the TVS diodes with a multimeter. If they are shorted, you need to pull them and check if the planes are shorted afterwards. What is the brand of the drive?

donor board has adaptive data on it that belongs to the donor drive. By swapping it without adaptation, you changing the adaptives on the board. Adaptation has to be done first
