Billy Joe Shaver; August 16, 1939 - October 28, 2020 First time I knew of Billy Joe Shaver, he was an unannounced opening act for Willie Nelson at a concert in Nashville in the seventies. He was playing, with the lights on, as people were coming in. He was great!
Met Billy Joe and his son when they played at a small club in Houston back in 1994. Invited to their van and he gave my a free C.D. which was very gracious of him. Had him sign it too just wished his son had signed it too before his passing.
I grew up listening to country. Merle. Willie, Waylon all came to mind so easily but I was not familiar with Billy Joe Shaver until my friend Nick told me of his years touring with him and introduced me to this video in particular. I'm so impressed and saddened that I didn't get to embrace the legend while he was alive. I look forward to getting to know more of his music now. Great song, great performance and so nice to see him with Willie on David Letterman. Proud of Nick Gaitan too, from Houston, so young and talented, he's the musician playing the bass. Respect.
Billy Joe Shaver is the greatest. Never tire of listening to his music. Wish he'd brought Waylon with him though. Broke the mold after God made Billy Joe Shaver and Waylon Jennings. You'll never see Billy without his signature Wrangler blue denim with pearl snaps for buttons shirts. Billy had a lot of heartaches in his lifetime. Especially losing his son Eddie.
