Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 Review and Unboxing: Is it better than a starter kit airbrush?

Watch as I unbox the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 airbrush, give my first thoughts and try it out for the first time.
Harder & Steenbeck bill this as a great beginner to intermediate airbrush, so I ask whether it’s any better than cheaper starter kit airbrushes you can pick up from Amazon.
Hope you find something useful in this video, if you have please like, share and subscribe to my channel for more Warhammer 40,000 hobby content!

I love love love the Ultra '24 to be honest. The build quality is great and above its price range, while the assembly is still simple in a positive way. The nozzle size is great for airbrushing primers or spraying thinned down regular opaque acrylics (e.g. the old Vallejo Game Color I still own and use). Possibly the best thing is that you can easily modify that tool. A 2ml cup will come out according to Warrick from H&S and the 0.28mm nozzle will be available "soon", so you can go for that with the 0.2mm needle and CRplus fineline head. The 0.4 fineline head is even backwards compatible with the 0.4mm needle and airhead threads of the Ultra '24. If you dont mind the design and tension of that trigger or the push fit cup, you could keep and use the Ultra '24 for the rest of your life and the build quality will pretty much last beyound that. The quality and value of that brush are so nice to see from such a big brand (with readily available spareparts to boot).

Great to hear you’ve got a similar opinion of it! Great insight on the needle / cup options that exist or are on the way, thank you - I’ll certainly be trying out the finer needle combinations when available. I received this as a present, which was kind - but I would 100% but it if I hadn’t, I totally agree it offers great value for money and feels like an airbrush that will support my development for a long time to come. Thanks for commenting!

Better push fit than trying to clean a thread.

Just got mine in the post today. Its my first airbrush and I'm going to be using it for priming & basing initially, but plan to learn more advanced techniques with it in the future. The sample card that came with mine had a very pleasent happy face and some very, very fine line work on the card. I think the needle size will be perfect for my needs. Cheers for the review!

Which compressor and booth do you use, I’m definitely getting the ultra 2024 but I, still tryna find those two

@@buriburibub The upgraded Timbertech with the 3L tank. Works great and its quiet. For the booth I use the Masters portable booth. Great price, and it works. If all you are going to use it for is water based acrylics, you don't need to get too worried about the exhaust setup.

Thank you so much for this review, I've barely begun watching it however it's already been immensely useful. I've spent an hour trying to understand how to integrate the quick release adapater with my current hose and what adapters to use in order to save spending another £40 on a specific hose, something I really didn't want to do. In 30 seconds you showed that the part can be removed and I was audibly relived. Thank you.

If you follow Badger best practise you should never need to take it apart. But if you do, removing the needle out the front stops you from getting paint in the rear part of the airbrush. There is a good Harder and Steenbeck video with Warrick doing a space marine which will help you with distance.

I'm laughing because just like you i completely ignored the QR code on that card which leads to a tutorial video. First thing i also did was to take it apart to just see all the mechanisms. Also, just like you i got it after using a cheapo one for a little while. I don't have any other frame of reference, but i really love using it... it sprays way more consistently and doesn't clog every five minutes. I also notice that it's way easier to clean and i'm guess that's because of the chrome plating.

One thing I found with my Infinity, which uses the same needle/nozzle system as the Evolution and Ultra, is that if you turn the air pressure down to around 10psi and thin the paint even more and use the fine trigger action, you can lay down highlights in a much more controlled way. The distance from the needle to subject should be no more than two finger widths.

Picked up the older Ultra for christmas, action is super smooth but I find mixing in the cup difficult. It will not be replacing my Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. But it is pretty.

That’s interesting - in what sense? I noticed the channel into the airbrush itself is quite deep, is that what you mean? Or is it the slight curvature at the top of the cup? I saw another video from H&S saying that the deep channel into the airbrush meant you could use it without the cup for very small applications of paint, which blew my mind a bit. Haven’t tried it yet…

@@m40hobbies i've seen people use it without a cup in reviews, apparently it'll take 4 drops of paint.

My Ultra 2024 arrived a week ago and I just painted up my first minis. I’m not sure if I am in the minority here, but I was really disappointed. I have been airbrushing for about 3-4 years (mainly just zenithal priming) with a Badger Patriot 105. The badger has been a great tool for priming, but I am wanting to get into basing and highlighting with the airbrush and was excited for this new Ultra 2024. Main disappointment has been clogging. It has been so bad I was sure they sent the wrong needle / nozzle combo. I have run stynelrez primer and white ink through a 190 micron straining funnel and with both of these the Ultra 2024 clogged up, almost immediately with the primer and after 30 seconds or so with the white ink. I have never had to thin my primer or ink when using the badger, but had really bad clogging with the Ultra. I think, not sure, but I think it is due to the setting collar (prime, base, and 3 highlight settings). Even on prime, the furthest setting, the trigger can’t go back far enough. The tip of the needle is still sticking out of the nozzle so there is a tiny gap for paint to flow through. Also, the nozzle hole is about 1/3 the size of the badger patriot, despite the badger being a .5 and the Ultra 2024 a .45. I haven’t tried it on the wide open setting, but plan to do that later this week and will provide an update. Curious if others have experience similar results.

I have never heard of an airbrush that you didn't add thinner to.

@@HappyDuude I never ran a thinner in my Badger Patriot, unless I was thinning non airbrush paint so it could be sprayed.

Having same problem, hope it’s just a case of getting to know the new optimal mix for paints. Took me a while to find it with the cheaper brush but once I did it was fine. Fingers crossed it’s the same with this
