Hardest maths questions - minimisation 

This question, from the 2001 senior Australian Mathematics Competition, requires us to find the minimum value of a complicated algebraic expression. Let's see if we can find a geometric interpretation of the expression, to avoid using calculus (but watch from 6:46 to see the solution using calculus).
