Hardest Ski Run in Europe? - Grand Couloir Courchevel

Grand Couloir in Courchevel is often touted as the hardest ski run, the hardest ski piste, in Europe. Grand Couloir is not pisted at the top, but the area is secured, meaning that it is shown as a black run on a piste map. Note that in Europe there is no such thing as a double black diamond, you get black, and that's it! At some parts the run is 38.6 degrees, or 80%, steep. Is it the steepest ski run in Europe? But the real question is, did you see the rubber duck?

Amazing run, really like your channel. What you could try as the camera never shows the steepnes just hold a key or anything tangeling with your hand as compareson. Can`t imagine how steep it acctualy is.

not only go pro. even my own eyes deceive me. once I drop and I am on a steep run, I can't tell how steep it really is. Once I Am at the bottom I look back (just as Malcom did on this video) and I'm like wow...I really did that steep run...
@CutePoisonEU
@CutePoisonEU 2 года назад
How to tell any run is hard? Malcom with all his experience and fitness level huffs and puffs down the portion of it doing 13km/h. That tells you a lot. Great video, nice to be able to see parts of the mountain where I'll never get to, realistically :D

Madness, the path to the Couloir looks harder than the Coulour itself. Im pretty sure La Chavanette/Swiss Wall, Harakiri, Kandahar and Streif and are all steeper. Dope snowboarding as always, flying down that like it was nothing!
@henrybreen
@henrybreen 2 года назад
I agree that harakiri looks steeper, not really many rocks on it tho
@elho001
@elho001 2 года назад
@@henrybreen According to Wikipedia the Harakiri has 78% "only", so is less steep. And yes, due to being groomed, having no rocks on it nor to the sides and the steep part being shorter, gently getting less steep, it to me looks less intimidating.
@cube63
@cube63 2 года назад
@@elho001 my mistake, the others still stand, Kandahar is 92% and Streif 85%. I also forgot Gamsleiten 2 which hits 100%.
@elho001
@elho001 2 года назад
@@urlauburlaub2222 Of course, length and profile of the slope do matter. Both for how intimidating/steep they look, which was what being discussed, and also how difficult it is, simply because something low consequential and very short like the Harakiri, makes both sliding it down on your butt - as can regularly be observed there - as well as going some short steep part a bit faster than planned, knowing the absence of any bumps and the gently flattening section afterwards will allow you to safely stop, valid exit strategies that you likely survive unharmed. (I still would only ever take a run, if those were very unlikely worst-case scenarios). There definitely are a lot more less skilled snowboarders that made it down the Harakiri one way or another than there are for the Sauliere Couloirs. Mind you, this is snowboarding, not skiing. And while the last skis I ever used, were the 80s type reaching up to the top of ones head (if not higher, to "grow into" them, as a kid), I can attest you, that both riding moguls as well as pure (and from a skiers perspective trivial) straight lining is a lot easier on skies than on a snowboard. I guess you state the carvers being easier for the Couloir because they are shorter and more willing to turn? While a snowboard is arguably easier to jump-turn than long skis, as a skier you still leverage the mogul to your advantage to ease the turning and being predominantly generated by skiers, their spacing does fit that movement pattern - on a snowboard, however, the mogul only only gets in your way, maintaining your balance becoming the biggest challenge with the incline permanently and wildly changing in all directions. I find it an interesting challenge, and like the fact that you need to plan a couple of turns ahead and find the arrangement of moguls that you can best fit a turn in (much like in tight trees, which are fun for that reason), the vast majority of snowboarders shy away from even the most mellow black run, if it is a mogul field and consequently would rather go for the Harakiri than that, if they were forced to choose.

The path from the saulire gondola to the couloir proper is devilishly steep and narrow. It really sucks on tracked out days, luckily mr. MM got half decent conditions - though it’s a run that is never to be taken lightly. I lived in Le Praz for 3 years, skied and snowboarded for a good few years, and it took 2 of them to work up the beans to take the plunge!

Saw someone crash after he had rolled for a while and broke a leg, and waited until I saw help: an ESF teacher saw it happen and reached out. The most scary part is the path to the couloir. On the top of the mountain there's also a black slope which is on the left side, which goes under the egg shaped lift and descends to Meribel.

You can carve steeper runs bit it'll be harder. You need to have a really good edge hold at higher speeds and with more pressure going through the board. You'll also want to be able to really lean into the turn to pull the board around in a tighter arc. And it will be made far easier if the snow is good!

Not too bad luck with the conditions - sure tracked out, but you found a line close to the rocks. Still have it on the TODO list myself - first time I was there, conditions were quite bad, I faced truly icy moguls reaching up to my shoulders on the notably less steep Bosses run in Meribel (not to be confused with the yet less steep Bosses run in Courcevel) that made that more of an annoyance rather than fun, thus I passed on the Couloirs - only makes sense if its enjoyable. When I was there early this season, there was quite fresh snow, but it came along with very high avalanche risk, most of the lesser black runs remained closed half of the week. And the Sauliere gondola was not running at all while I was there. Well, one day I'll be lucky with the conditions... You sure like to point it. 😆 I like to go for the tighter carves rather than the raw speed, looking at my wavy tracks of the Combe de la Sauliere, fastest I went there consequently was 68.5 km/h. But I had to smile, seeing you take exactly the same route after the slow sign as I did, cutting all the way over to the less frequented right side of the slope. 😀

If he goes off right at the start of the ridge, then he is going to ride the Couloir sous Pylons (also: Couloir sous les Cables), if he goes off towards the end of the ridge, he is going to ride the Couloir Emile Allais.

I don’t know about Europe, I’ve never boarded there, but whistler/blackcomb definitely has a bunch of runs that’ll rival that. Kickinghorse too, Goat’s Eye at Sunshine. Probably lots more I’ve yet to try.

The ridge reminds me of the ridge after Stairway chair in Kicking Horse

The entry section looks horrible in terms of getting over this narrow part. Could you do one more run, this time with your X3 in 360° mode and a chest heart rate monitor on? 🙂

That ridge at the top looks way too narrow! Me, I’d walk that 🐓🐔😄

Grand Couloir is just from 0:45 to around 3 minute mark, then it's simply Combe-Saulire / Téléphone red runs...just saying, title is a bit misleading.

New Title: Grand Couloir (from 0.45 to around 3 mins) then another piste afterwards, that if you do Grand Couloir you will also then do, but it is not Grand Couloir, its a different one. 👍

@@malcolmmoore Or just use the fact to your advantage and name it Grand Couloir in 2:15. 😉
