Our next machining setup for the dynamic jaw will be on the old Kearney & Tracker 307 S-12 horizontal milling machine. Here will use our Walter 4" face mill and machine the top of the square body to get it onto size. Next up we'll finish milling the bolt on jaw face.

“The D.R.O on this mill isn’t that accurate, it always changes a couple thou when you lock and unlock the knee”. [Proceeds to get the indicator out] Indicator changes a couple thou when you lock and unlock the knee. I guess the D.R.O IS that accurate! 😂🤣

Neat how the body of the mill looks like it's spinning in the correct direction but the cutters look like they are spinning backward.

I like this new tech where the tool spins opposite direction to the spindle. I believe that reduces imbalance vibrations and yields nicer surface although chips are being blown away in a direction opposite to cutting because of wind from spindle. Very cool!

Come to our shop,,,,and it's a revenue shop. We are actually industrial electrical/millwright contractors and have repair and replacement jobs where the parts are no longer available or have 6 months lead times. Well over half the time we can have the part done and be typing the invoice to the client before the kid can finish the pretty picture in SolidWorks and get the program out to the floor for the Haas mill. ,,,, Who can then start loading the tool changer. - If you think manual machines are not used every day to make money you ave not been out in the industrial world.CNC has it's place but it's not for quick turnarounds. .

Yep.. same question about using a fly cutter. Also, I think you could have saved a skyhook move, by lifting the workpiece onto one end of the cart. Then sliding the vice to the same end of the table, and setting it on the other end of the cart. And if the skyhook had been mounted to the cart, no setups at all. :-) Yah . I know, Monday morning quarter backs! :-) Just hoping to save you some wear and tear. I think all old machinists suffer from to many heavy lifts.

❤ .0005 is close enough. A cigarette paper is. 0025 so 1/5th the thickness of a cigarette paper on that old milling machine isn't too bad. I am sure a lot of work has been done plus stones used just like you did in the center of that table so it's not going to be perfect as a new one for sure. Even a new milling machine will move the table when you tighten the knee. ❤ I enjoyed watching the show Adam. I do not think I have missed a episode in the last 2 or 3 years and I like them all. This setup would be the perfect time to have some Abom sized "low" profile table vices. The ones that have the taper to them to press into the material as they are tightened down. But, they use a SHCS fpr a fastener which is recessed in the body fully. Putting two on either side rather than the toe clamps to stabilize the middle and reduce or eliminate the ringing. Most of these clamps are only about a half inch thick. I'd like to think and Abom sized one would be an inch and a half thick and two inches wide.

If you set the part on the table the other way round so you cut from right to left, the chips would fly to the back instead of towards you. The indicator is not needed. The finishing cut is relative to the previous cut, if both have the table locked the distance the knee moves on the dro or knee dial is correct. When the knee was moved up to 0.048" on the indicator it actually moved 0.050" because the needle dropped to -0.002" when unclamped. On the second attempt the table was moved 0.048" from -0.002" on the indicator to 0.046" and the clamp raised the final 0.002". Generally the knee is rarely locked, the large mass of the knee takes care of any Z axis backlash. This leaves the knee solid and the sheer mass of the knee & part stop any lift. The only issue arises when a combination of a cut with the knee locked is referenced to a cut without it locked. This is what was used in the video & the issue was entirely self inflicted. Using a depth micrometer with a 5" long spindle does not give a solid feel. It is far easier to use a 1" rod onto a 4" gauge block. A nice chamfer could have been added to either side with that cutter.

@ericanderssen6816
@ericanderssen6816 7 месяцев назад
The finish changing on exit could also be from the part or tool 'ringing'. A 0.050" cut isn't nothing. Cutter on the backside has less load/deflection so prolly cuts a bit more coming back across which I'm sure you know. Also, yeah a long fly cutter would have done it...
@ChatNoirLe
@ChatNoirLe 7 месяцев назад
I don't think so, you can see the cutter making arcs instead of full circles, so the tram is slightly off, but on the end you can see full circles, so from one side to the other the spindle tram is changing, a somewhat common problem on old equipment, the bed ways are worn curved, so the bed traces that curve.

In a manner of speaking it is the effect. The gib is 'adjusted' for the center a worn area. The gib is getting tighter as the unworn, or lesser worn dovetails engage that area and the table bucks a bit as the table is powered through. With hand cranking you can read the wear patterns of a production machine using the gib adjustment as a feeler gauge.

Are you talking about a deviation from vertical for the spindle? I think some of that might be the lens and capture, which is definitely not orthogonal. The spindle actually looked pretty vertical to me. Then you can do the math... at nearly 0 degrees tilt, it's less than a thousandth error per degree over the 50 thousandths, so... not too bad. Could have been off a little, but still well within tolerances for this beast!

1- It is way MORE the accrate enough for the vise and 100s of othere things. - +/- .010 TIR is good enough for a friggin vise. Most places on ot +/- .,025 would do. 2 Tighten the gibs. It only moves .002 what you go from dead loose to full tight. If you loosen the lock just enough for it to move it would be dead nuts on. .

The tram of the spindle in nod and yawl seems to be A1. The pattern left by the cutter teeth tells the tale. As to how to make this so, several ways, he usually trams by swinging a DTI (dial test indicator) over an averaging block placed on the table. There are at least 4 ways l know of to achieve this ensurance. As to how this time, your quess is as valid as mine.
