Hardy hibiscus are one of the easiest and showiest shrubs you can add to your summer garden! These fantastic plants are right at home in the sun in your cottage garden and produce flowers for weeks on end. Hi Jenny, thank you for sharing this video. I didn't even know that they were only annuals but I certainly would love to try the perennial and I'm gardening in zone 5 so that should work out for me if I can find them. Ty

Oooooh I need to get some of these perennial ones! Just to let ya'll know... I have a tropical hibiscus tree I got at a big box store, and in the early Fall I brought it inside and kept it near a south facing window. It bloomed a few times during winter! I put it outside in Spring and it has done beautifully! So you really can bring those tropical ones indoors for the winter as long as they get good light and are kept warm!

I planted my first hibiscus this spring and the nursery warned it will be the absolute last to break dormancy, so do not dig it out! It is slow to show. But the summer show is worth the wait. I love these!

I had one a couple of years ago in a pot and the first year was beautiful. The next year when it came up some sort of bug got to it and it never recovered that year. Next year the same thing and then it never came back again. Are these type prone to pests?

These are such beautiful plants. I purchased one last year at the end of the season so didn't expect much but it is doing really well so far. I'm glad you forewarned that it takes it's time to grow in the Spring. I didn't see growth in the early Spring so thought mine didn't make it. As you said, though, once you see the new growth start, it grows quickly! I have a quick question about fertilizing - do you add a slow release and/or water soluable fertililzer (and if so, how often and what ratio/type)? Thanks for sharing; I love your videos!
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 года назад
Great question! Only fertilize in the early Spring with a slow release fertilizer (Plant-time is what I use)

@@GardeningwithCreekside I have 3 of the Holy Grail, this will be my 3rd year with them, I just put them in the ground about a month ago here in N. Texas. Last year I used Miracle Gro for acid loving plants, and they did well in the 7 gallon pots. I bought a huge bag of Holly-Tone for them this year. Wont that work well for them? On the Miracle Gro box it does say for hibiscus, so am I feeding them correctly with Espoma Holly-Tone? Thank you!

I’m also in NC 7B, this year I transplanted mines from all day full sun to part shade and it grew so much bigger but the blooms just dried off before opening. Any tips? Could it just have been the sun was too hot this summer?

How do we care for them once fall hits? Trim it back? Does it just die down and we remove the branches? Leave the branches to help it with energy?
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 года назад
In our Southern climate you can simply cut in to about 6” tall after the first hard freeze. Northern gardeners may want to leave their stalls taller to help with the weight of snow & ice.

I have been looking for them. Nurseries in my area are out of PW Hibiscus. I ordered the Craberry crush from Amazon, but they sent the most sickly plant. Sigh!

After you have a good hard freeze you can cut it down to 6-8” highz

How long after they start growing before they get flower buds? I drizzle water at the bottom of my plants , they’re about 2’ tall this is the second year in the garden since I started them from seed. How can I get them to flower? They’re in full sun.

I'm moving to Virginia beach, literally right above north Carolina, would I be as to plant these in full sun? Our land has no trees close to the house where I would want to plant them. We're in 8a
@GardeningwithCreekside

They would! Just make sure they get consistent water for their first simmer so that they can establish a healthy root system.

I would not recommend it as they have a very vigorous root system and I could see it getting pot bound very easily.
