Harley Davidson Dyna Combination Analog Speedometer/Tachometer MPH and fuel gauge dummy cap Fix.

I have an 06 FXDWG and I installed the HD speedo/tach/fuel gauge. Did not feel the need to have 2 fuel gauges, so I removed the stock gas gauge and replaced it with a dummy cap. Problem is that the low fuel light is constantly on now that the stock fuel gauge has been disconnected. In doing some research I read that you actually need the original one operational for the one in the new tach/speedo to function. You will need to take apart the original cap, wrapped the remaining functional part in tape and put it in the hole below the dummy cap. This way the fuel gauge in the speedo remains functional.
Good Luck!

THANK YOU , THANK YOU , THANK YOU , I COULDN’T FIGURE OUT WHY NEITHER OF MY FUEL GUAGES WORKED. So I replaced my fuel float assembly, ok that didn’t work, $75 dollars down the hole. Saw your video and sure enough that’s what was wrong with mine the fuel gauge in the dummy hole had died . But THANKS TO YOU I now have a working fuel gauge, HOORAY! ! ! ! !

Thanks for this video and info. I bought a set of black caps, the left one being the dummy cap and your video is helpful. I think it's ridiculous that HD doesn't offer a bypass circuit that you can put in the dead hole or in the harness somewhere, especially when they themselves offer different speedos etc. In fact the speedos should come with the bypass. They cost enough! This is such a hack, but WCYD? Nice bike too man 👍

Love the speedo on the bars, man. I have an '07 FXDWG. I was hoping to do a 4" speedo up there (I prefer a digital speedo, and want a bigger tach than this gauge offers), but I'm having trouble finding info on whether it'll work or not. Anyway, I'm curious where you got the blank cover for the dash where your speedo used to reside. Did you make it or buy it? Thanks.

Thanks for the comment, it’s actually not a cover but the stock speed painted silver. i kinda wish i pained it black but I still like it. Good luck with your Speedo find

@@greenguyshrek no shit? So you just painted the stock speedo? Never even thought of that as an option. Go figure. Maybe I could do a vinyl decal or something so it's easily removable. Either way, thanks for the reply. Nice looking bike brother. Dig the gray color.

@@live2ride9696 that’s exactly what i wish i did, just paint the plastic face black or use a vinyl sticker and leave the chrome bezel

Cool cool what size is your new speedometer is it the 4” the same size as the one on the tank ? If so how did you mount it to the bars I can’t find a mount that’s the same size as the one on my tank

I have the flush mount gauge on my 05 night train..I just installed the new tach n speedometer and the gas indicator does not work... would splicing in the old analog to the flush mount get it to work ? thanks for any advice..

I have not heard of that I think the bike needs any gas gauge installed for the gas on the tach to work

For this to work does it have to be the actual original fuel Gauge? or can it be a LED flush mount style ?

I believe any gauge will do, I personally did not go with one cause the HD Speedo has a gas gauge built in

Do you know, that can be done much (!!!) more simple? You just need to put 140 kOhm resistor between orange and yellow wire...

Thanks for the info, not sure if anyone has thought of that yet.

I looked up that resistor 140 K , I see it comes in 1/8th 1/4 & 1/2 watt which one would you recommend for this repair, Thanks for your knowledge & time .

Except the gauge will never change. The signal wire (yellow) resistance changes as the float in the tank moves. With a fixed resistor it will always be the same reading.
