Can you guys review the HD Street 500?

+Okie Rider As the 500 is very similar to the 750, we probably won't have a separate review for it, though of course there's always a possibility. -DrewZilla

+Okie Rider The only difference between the 500 and the 750 is the displacement of the engine and the size of the fuel injection port. Everything else is basically the same. Both bikes have the same length, seat height, wheels, tires, engine block, gearbox, gear ratios, brakes, and overall weight. Everything Lemmy said about the handling of the 750 is the same with the the 500. The difference is that because the 500 makes a bit less power, it's a bit slower to accelerate, but it does get a bit better gas mileage than the 750. I apologize that we aren't able to provide a video review for the 500, but I hope this information helps a bit. -DrewZilla

RevZilla Thanks, for the quick response. Yes, I understand now why you guys don't do the review. But it's like a lot of car/bike reviews on RU-vid only show the high-end bikes and/or loaded GMC Sierra 4x4 crew cab SLE pickup. Not every one can afford expensive toys. Lol

+Rob Vespa You need to visit Revzilla.com more often, and look at the product videos. Lemmy really rocks on hardware videos. Recently did one on changing out exhaust systems on bikes, and wasn't afraid to show off the burn mark under his wrist watch. Ya gotta love the man who also shows his mistakes. You know, Lemmy is one of those guys who you'd expect to ride around in a Hell's Angels (no offense, Lemmy) jacket and be all bad-assed and stuff, but beneath those curly locks of his there is a razor sharp mind and a LOT of motorcycle knowledge. It really comes across on his videos. The man knows whereof he speaks! :)

I have had mine for almost 6 or 7 months, and I can tell you YES the engine is awesome, you can do almos 80km/h (about 50mph) in 2nd gear if you want to drag a little and you CAN smoke anything around the 900cc range on "typical" cruisers. The torque is in the mid range but as I said you can keep going and going, I´ve never hit the rev limiter actually. You can easily top the needle at 180km/h (111 mph), the tires are perfect, even on wet is still really hard to skid, and the suspension is long, I mean LONG I took it into a little mountain road, with dust and stones just laying around and it never botomed even while riding with passenger (skiny chick, meh). And YES the footpegs are weird, now i have found the "correct" way to step on them wich is with the heel of the boot hanging and the feet pointing forward (knees out, yes, its super weird but it works better that way), the fuel tank is really wide so you can hug it with your knees if you go into rampage mode. The only bad thing i have found is the crappy back seat the dealership offers (the ugly one they have here with the grill included) and that rutinary services are almost as expensive as the Vrod AND HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO FIND NEUTRAL UNLESS YOU ARE GOING FROM 2ND GEAR, from 1st its virtually imposible. And that thing in the front does not offer any kind of protection from the wind, it should be a little bit taller, m guessing they put it there to hide all the 5yo wirings a little jajaja and if I want to get picky, the seat, I cant help to try to get as far back as i can and Im only 5´10, the tall boy seat is a must if you want to ride long distances. The exhaust is not so bad, when you give it fuel it sounds like a baby vrod, the torquey engine does growl preaty neat mid range. Oh and the throtle guard is horrible, Ive seen better in 150cc scooters, it moves around and makes a plastic noise. BUt for that price, the engine is totally worth it, is a total different feeling than the iron or the japanese bikes, is somewhere between having a little bit of both worlds.

Where I would ride it is most 30 km/h and 120 kmh on freeway :D But on weekend we would cruise up the hills on highway, so this seems ok to me. Do you agree? Thanks. and love your way of presentation, cool, down to earth and very inteligent. Stay strong and safe!!!

I have this bike and the comments about the front brake are absolutely spot on. I'd say both the front and rear require the rider to engage them much, much further than you'd be comfortable with before you get any bite.

Great review. With these already slipping down into the $4-$5K range used, I think I found my next bike. The liquid cooling is a huge deal to someone that has dealt with overheating in traffic on my sportster. I don't want to abandon Harley fully and go to a sport bike so this bike is extremely appealing to me.

Just came from a 2018 Street 750 test ride (I have ridden the first model and then this latest one, nothing in between). I have to say, feels like HD watched this video and fixed the bike accordingly. It really improved a lot, you can actually hear the "clank" when you shift gear, front brake works fine and the bike has also ABS. Mirrors still suck balls but no big deal, and the pipes well... I don't think they are ever going to change that, since the bike is designed for city riding, they don't want it to make too much noise. I think it's a good time to get this bike, for someone who is looking for his frist ever ride, also considering the fact that many other manufacturers have risen their prices... I don't have numbers on hand but, this really must be in the top 5 most inexpensive motorcycles today

I'm just about to move into getting my first bigger bike, previously having only ridden a 125 as a learner. I think this is definitely the bike for me, I had a test ride yesterday and loved every second of it. I never had to fight the bike, and the bike wasn't fighting me, it just did what I wanted it to and I always felt completely in control. I want a bigger bike with Harley style but also something not too heavy and cumbersome because living in the UK, really most of our riding is stop/start through towns and roundabouts, with the occasional jaunt up and down a motorway. Thanks for this review it really helped me find the right bike for me :)

Let me start by prefacing that I am a Harley guy and always will be. I have a 2009 Street Glide and just bought one of these as well. The big bikes are amazing for long trips because they are beyond comfortable. But ripping around a major city can suck. The air-cooled engine gets so hot and it's harder to whip in and out of traffic. Try this thing and you will see it is the most fun thing to play on. If you are a new rider this handles beyond anything. Great review Lemmy and amazingly bang on.

Hi I bought the 2016 Harley Street and had a Vancehines exhaust fitted, the tank painted up using HD black/orange graphics. I've owned several bikes mainly twins and this performs brilliantly...... loads of power through all the gears!! Gear changing is positive, not clunky and feet position straight down (not in air like trad Harley's). Never wanted an oversize trad Harley, so at 5ft 9 and 14stone... this bike is light n easy to manoeuvre, fun naked bike. Good on M-way upto 70mph, no racer of course, but ideal commuter, weekend bike for me. It's loud, turns heads and I'm very pleased with it. Time will tell on build but it does come with 24months warranty, so no worries eh....! Try ride before slagging off, as it rides better than it looks for sure... AND it feels like a bad ass Harley to boot!!! Enjoy

Great review, I just bought a 2015 Street 750. It was a late production bike. My experience with this bike is a little different. I have had no problem with the shifting. Also, I feel like the front brake is Okay well capable of locking the front wheel up. Seems to feel okay to me. I agree that the engine is great. I also agree that the mirrors suck ass. I am 5 foot 11 and do not feel cramped. Your review helped me decide to try this bike out. My Harley dealer let me test a Street 750 before I bought one. I really like this bike and I have been riding since 1978. I have had some real shitty bikes and I have had some really good bikes. This bike is one of the better for sure. Thanks Lemmy.

Street 750 is a great bike, i have owned it for 3 months, rode more than 1500 km and it worked perfectly. The only problem is when i drive in the city it's overheat very weak, you can easily fell the heat burn through your legs, and the second seat is a nightmare for those who ride with you.

I grew up in NH and come back yearly to visit family. I rented a 750 yesterday in Laconia and put 256 miles on it. Overall? A fun bike. Torquey engine and very maneuverable, with very easy shifting. I wasn't a fan of the suspension, and it was a little small and cramped. I also wish it had more than just a speedometer. It made it just over 200 miles before it needed gas, and did not need to shift much on the back roads we took. We rode north to the Mt. Washington area and back down the Kancamangus Hwy. Belt drive and more power than a Sportster 883...a nice proposition for all kinds of people. I hope they sell well.

tryarunm I must mention that her high chassis is what makes her such a good handler OF Indian roads. The Iron, Super Low, V-Rod come to grief on our agricultural streets that have unreasonably high and sharp speed-breakers and potholes. And her pickup beats any of the German cars.

I agree with most of what he said. This is my first Harley(I'm the original owner purchased with 83 miles on it) - I went from Kawi to a Harley & the first thing I noticed was the breaks & the clutch. The mirrors not so much I guess because I'm short but I have found the right position where I can see behind me. It does have a lot a power and I do ride a lot in the city and the handling is a lot better than my Kawi. The seat not so much usually after 60 miles or so I'm ready for a stop. I have learned that there are not a lot accessories for this bike and what you do find is kinda expensive.( I'm wanting to install LED lights and it's a pain in the rear to get to battery). I got a good deal on this bike and that is the main reason why I went with a Harley. So far I'm glad I did.

Another great review from Lemmy! Besides the enthusiasm which I am digging, pointing out good and bad points of the bike in real world riding is awesome. Only thing I thought was missing was how far does the bike go on a tank of petrol. I rode a Street 500 for my MSF course, I am 6'1" and 275, there was no problem with the get-up and go, but I had to sit on the rear seat to ride it and even then my knees were way high. Also, with size 13 feet the foot placement was bad. I had to basically just keep the front of my foot on the pegs or it was hopeless. It was a decent bike, a big improvement over the little 250s, and one member of our class actually bought the 750 one the following Monday. I had not ridden in over 35 years and bought a used '08 Ultra Classic before the course. Riding the street convinced me I made the right choice. I ride mostly in the city also.

Gotta say that most of what you mentioned mirrored my thoughts, it's a very lovable, dependable bike with a couple things to improve but I don't care because i use it as a daily commuter now with intentions to pass it down to the next generation in the future, lol, so I'll work on it anyways. I looked into the Kawi and almost got it but I felt it soulless whereas the 750 spoke to me. I actually don't have a complaint on the brakes, they stop when I want them to but everybody seems to hate them, I'll do the mods you mention and I bet I'll be even happier. Had a few miss shifts too but riding position is very comfortable to me. The exhaust, the mirrors, the horn and the rear plastic light assembly are what I have issues with, the designers better redeem themselves for them. Overall I'm very happy with the 750 (and the many praises from random people too) and discovered that I could work on it and give it a nice little modern cafe racer look and feel. Please keep reviewing parts/gear for this model as I feel I'm not the only one wanting to see more. Kudos to your production team and to you Lemmy again, the style keeps getting better and better. In short every time I swing a leg over it I always say "why didn't I do this earlier?" And every time I'm online I tune to Revzilla to see what's new in this awesome motorcycle life.

***** you get extra brownie points for also telling us how to fix the issues you've found, most reviewers just tell you it has bad brakes, which kinda means it's a bad bike, when $50 could turn it into a great bike.

@@biggideal I am about 220lbs and rode this bike at my beginner class. I felt like the brakes were adequate. My girl's Vulcan S out brakes it though, for what its worth. So does every sport bike out there, including the beginner friendly ones like the ninja 400 or r3.

Great Review! The bike however wreaks of cheap build quality, which is fine, if it were cheap.

Rode the Street 500 for the HD Riding Course (Passed their course this Sunday!) Never rode a motorcycle before, but after the first day of riding, I think the bike's size helped a lot with the learning curve for a new rider like me. I'm tall about 6ft2in and they had a tall seat option on the learner bike and that helped a bit more, but I was still uncomfortable. I'm sure with a tall seat and forward controls it would a be a bit more comfortable, although in reality I'd never ride this, doesn't fit my style or size. All the Cons of the bike you pointed out were what I encountered with while in the course. The front brakes worked fine for me (I'm sure they may have changed them up since it's a learner bike from the repairing), but they taught me I have to use both front and back, maybe for safety reasons. I was in the course with 3 other more "experienced" riders renewing their licenses (they ride sport bikes), and we all agreed the clutch lever was strange: felt that its friction zone was nearly 3/4ths out of the lever, caused me to stall the bike a lot when trying to take off in 1st. Just wanted to throw in my opinion of a brand new rider's experience with it. All in all, I'm pumped to be a rider now and saving for my first bike!

@SpurgeonDunbar
@SpurgeonDunbar 9 лет назад
William McDonell Like ***** mentioned, so far I have racked up 73,000 miles on my personal Bonneville T-100. While I have sentimental attachment to it, I am not blind to her flaws. I have spent time on all of the 865cc bikes in Triumph's lineup and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Are you looking for a T-100 or a mag wheel Bonnie? Between the two the mag-wheel Bonnie is a bit more fun and flickable with it's 17" rubber up front. I built one out for a friend once with an updated suspension, exhaust, fuel map, flat track bars, CRG mirrors, and a custom seat. The thing handled better than the T-100 or Thruxton and was a blast to rip around on. Made it hard to go back to my T-100. That being said, the T-100 gives you a bit more of a classic styling. Both versions are heavy, weighing in around 500 pounds. I like the engine for what it is, a even keeled little twin that makes about 60 ponies at the rear wheel. While it's fun to rip around on and has a really linear power curve, it's not going to be the fastest bike out there. Also, the fact that it's air cooled makes it a pain in the ass when sitting in traffic. Currently residing in Philly, I often miss living in LA where I could lane split freely. If you have any specific questions I can answer for you, don't hesitate to ask.

Good review. I think they should have let the designer of the fuel tank in on what the rest of the bike was going to look like. Can we get a Harley that does not have an air filter just hanging off the side of the motor? Back in 1983 Honda built the VT500FT Ascot looks about the same to me.

After more than 30 yrs of riding UJM's and sport tourers, I've come to a place where I'm looking at cruiser style bikes, although the Street appears to be closer to a UJM...never thought I would consider parking a HD in my garage, but I have to look to be sure. Great review, thanks for the insight.

Looks like the brakes in this bike are totally shitty and the company is not going to issue a recall inspite of the customers getting into accidents because of the manufacturing defect. In India the customers are protesting and are trying to get the buyers to sign petitions ( www.change.org/p/vikram-pahwa-md-h-d-india-change-we-demand-h-d-street-750-faulty-brakes ) as the company is not responding.

This review inspired me to purchase a Street 750 2016 some months back. After putting 4,000 miles on it I can concur the same. The front brake needs to be swapped like yesterday, the suspension is mushy and I swapped it to progressive, the headlight was a bit small so I upgraded that. I threw some clubman bars on it because the stock ones look like a BMX bike handle bar. I tuned it with the FP3, put on a V02 intake. The rear fender like most bikes is ugly and I deleted it entirely, replaced with a tuffside seat and aftermarket brake lights. I can say the street is really fun for its size. But for anyone looking to buy this bike you grow out of it pretty quick. I'm upgrading to a sportster now, though my street 750 has been a blast it's time to go bigger. I am also disappointed in the stock look of the rear, they should of gone with a traditional Harley rear skirt instead of whatever the hell that short cut metal was they slapped on it.
