Harley Twin Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement with Push Rod Removal Complete - Part 2

Classic Wrench

50% 1

Part 2 in this series continues with the installation of the secondary tensioner using the tool specifically for this task. On this bike the oil pump was removed for inspection so a special task was done to re-align the pump, this is not normally part of the procedure but necessary for a pump repair or swap.
The cam alignment should be conducted before the cam carrier unit is reinstalled into the bike. The dashes should face each other as shown in the video.
A further centering procedure is required for the oil pump, only if the pump was removed from the unit.
On reassembly lifters should be returned to the same direction they were removed from.
The breather on this bike was epoxied together at the factory and not designed to be split, this may be the same for earlier bikes.

What kind of crazy video is this? No Music , No jabbering, No Stuttering, No Umms, Errrs, Uhhs? Clear concise, to the point, NO BULLSHIT, and possibly the most understandable mechanical disassembly/assembly video I've ever seen... Subbed, Rang the Bell, and looking forward to anything else you care to share... BRAVO!

It can be done, but it is a little easier, and less expensive if you do it more than once, to have adjustable push rods. He did remove the rocker boxes. What I didn't see him do was replace bearings or clean out screen sock.

What an excellent presentation -- I feel like I now have a thorough understanding of camchain tensioner removal and replacement. Did this last winter. I suggest if anyone is doing this, to upgrade to the shoes made with Stanyl Polyamide the ones from "Cyco Gaskets" and not the stock Harley crap. Also, always replace the crap Harley INA inner cam bearings with torrington bearings. Always good practice to upgrade Harley parts because Harley engineers have shit for brains!

Great Video!! Although I am still afraid, I will get everything apart okay, But, when it comes to putting everything back together, Oh boy!! My Shovelhead I had back in the mid 80's was the last time I attempted to work on my Harley. I also had a great friend that rode and worked on Harleys forever. He had a garage at his house and every tool imaginable. A great friend that helped me anytime I needed it. Then in 2000 I bought an 883 Sportster that was brand new and only needed maintenance which Harley would do, because I moved away from my buddy. A few years later after selling the too small 883, I bought a low rider which Harley Dealership also did the work on, this was back in 2004. Since then, I haven't ridden until last month when I went and bought a 2001 Dyna. I have hardly any tools and no friends that can help me, also no money since I became disabled and can't make the money I used to make!! So, I HAVE to learn to do this myself or sell the bike I just bought. Which selling it is out of the question since I'm way older and disabled, if I sold it I'd probably never ride again!! So, this video really helped! So far, I haven't checked for wear on the tensioners, since I don't ride much at the moment. Now it's time to buy some tools a bit at a time so I can at least check the tensioners before I ride again. I need sockets, wrenches and the gaskets to check them. Get that done hopefully this month, and just keep watching these two vids over and over again, so if I need to replace them, I'll have a better understanding of what is involved and hopefully get the sucker put back together correctly!! Rding makes my old, broke, disabled butt feel a heck of a lot better!! No way would I even attempt this job if I had not seen this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

@@delorean1 It did. I actually needed tensioners. I caught it literally just in time. There was a big chunk missing sitting in the bottom of the cam chest. I touched the tensioner and it fell apart in my hand. Luckily there was only 1 big chunk of plastic in the cam chest. Nothing else. I wound up putting in an S and S mod. New hydrolic tensioners. Better oil pump. And since repairing I put about 1200 miles on it. If I had started that bike one more time it would’ve been a boat anchor!! Thank you God!!!

Imagine my surprise when I opened her up and found a SE Cam plate along with Hydraulic Tensioners and SE 203 cams. If a guy has the money I think the conversion cam plate, and even a new set of cams would be the way to go. However like you I wasn't that cash heavy having just bought the bike.

When installing the secondary tensioner it should be 'pinned' with the tensioner pin to relieve pressure on the chain. If not the two cams will be out of alignment and a hasstle to reinstall the cam plate. After the plate is installed , the pin can now be pulled. This is also why the tensioner wasn't centered. I am surprised you got the two cams into the inner bearings with the tension on the chain . OPEN TO DEBATE

If you don’t have the centering tools just slowly snug the the 4 bolts little by little after turning the motor through 3 rotations. So 3 rotations loose. Then run them in until they touch the plate. So finger right basically. 3 more rotations of the motor. Then snug them down some. The service manual says how tight. 3 more rotations. Then final torque. That’s how we were taught by Harley in school. Also. The chain and sprocket don’t have to remain EXACTLY as they come out. The only part that matters is you don’t flip the chain around which would cause it to spin opposite of the way it spun before it was taken out. That’s not good. But if it’s not on the same teeth of the sprocket that doesn’t matter. They don’t stay in the same spot while it’s spinning anyway
@delorean1
@delorean1 2 года назад
I would have thought the school would have used the centering tool. Its the same one I use for my shovel head tappet blocks where centering is crucial for cam alignment. I know the chain the sprocket alignment isnt crucial, but there is some old lore about quicker wear if you dont keep the sprocket on the same spot. Not sure given todays QC if its still applicable but a lot of folks still do it out of habit.

I'm going to pick up my 03' 100 anniversary Soft Tail Springer and have not given them the check yet. I'm definitely going to ask them if this procedure was done on my bike and if not I will leverage it against the final price OR AT THE VERY LEAST, make them ((give me)) the kit to do it myself. It has 13000 miles on it and part of me wonders if the previous owner trashed the engine from not doing this. I'm used to changing slingers in an old bmw slash 2, so this will be a piece of cake. Great video. I subscribed on the spot. I wonder how much the shop I'm buying the bike from would charge for this service?

Exactly. If he's just going to sell it. Who cares. But if he's keeping it. The bearings should have been replaced. BECAUSE , they fail just as often as the Tentioners 🙄

Factory workshop manual for '99 dyna had an error. Exhaust flange lower torque to 10 ft lbs first. It's 100% 10 in lbs (given in metric as 1 nm which is correct) then 60-80 in lbs for both. I made a tool from 2" aluminium bar to press the exhaust gaskets in, they are made of soft cheese. ¼" 20 tpi tap to chase out the old thread lock if the cover has been off a few times.

Again - great video!!! Thanks. But - can anyone explain what's the difference between the oil pump centering tools and the bolts that go in after centering? Didn't quite grasp that.

Great videos! But now I ran into a problem maybe you can tell me where I went wrong. I started this project to replace oil pump thought it had gone out originally. Come to find out it was one of the tensioners. Followed along with you to replace mine on my 05 superglide fxdi. I got everything put together and tried priming as you did but wasn't getting pressure. Got the gauge out etc. Unbolted everything all over again. I had my wave washer in the pump in wrong position. Fixed that bolt everything back up. Got oil pressure now but not firing. Has a weird hollowish tone to it when it cranks. Gonna take it all back down a 3rd time but hoping maybe you have an idea on what to look into as I tear it down. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have a 2004 FXSTI Twin cam 88 ci. At 42k I did have The cam tensioners changed To hydraulic and put in a high volume oil pump. I also change the computer.$$$ My owner's manual says nothing about this problem. I learned about this from a guy I met at breakfast. He just happened to be a mechanic. The lord works in mysterious ways.🙏 Ride Save yall.🏍🦊

Where did you source the oem H-D tensioner? I can only find them on eBay and am a bit skeptical. Thanks for the awesome video. My Dyna I just picked up only has 16k miles but I feel I should replace the tensioners for peace of mind/ cheap insurance.
@delorean1

I purchased both directly from my local dealer. Remember removing the cam cover will allow for a decent inspection of their condition, it may only cost you a cam cover seal.

I have heard of guys using emery cloth to polish the outer surface of the cam chains to reduce wear on the tensioner shoes
@delorean1
@delorean1 2 года назад
Ive heard of this too, Id think after the first 30k miles whatever needed smoothing would have worn itself down unless those skids are reeeeally soft.
