I'm glad you enjoy meeting the folks that follow you. I also enjoy seeing the subscriber count climb. Admittedly I was a little star struck when I actually met you two, and I've been exposed to really big celebrities like James Doohan.
Rough because of the heat, buy still, 25 miles is epic. And once again trail angels are GREAT. We, your loyal subscribers and patrons, salute you (and them!) Hike on! Tortoise
It’s really sad she’ll have to leave in a few weeks. Unfortunately even if we did major RU-vid numbers someone has to be employed due to the whole needing health insurance thing.
Love you two! Yes I’ve watched all of your videos since the beginning and just letting you both know you are one of my highlights in my retirement life😂. Rock on and forever onward youngsters ! 👍❤️🥾⛰️
You guys are one of several channels I'm currently following, one apiece for different trails. I've enjoyed your channel the most of any of the ones I watch and appreciate you sharing your experiences. You are seeing parts of the country I will certainly never see and making awesome memories, even with the occasional nasty water or bad water stops along the way.
I started following you on the CDT and have been watching ever since. I've hiked vicariously through you since the beginning of the ADT and as a bonus, I don't add weight to Your pack. lol
I don’t know what adventure earned you the Masochist name, but hiking from Lyons, KS to Lamar, CO in early August certainly reinforces that it was appropriate! & fwiw, your content has always hit the mark in our house. I never thought I’d enjoy a vlog about a west Kansas hike, but there’s kind of a “fascination of the abomination” element to this… good luck! Keep pushing west!
you were wondering about the fields turning brown, the corn, soybeans, and wheat arent harvested until they are dead and the moisture drops to a certain percentage.
With the discussion around 4:00 and the wrench at 4:09, I think Matt has an off-season DIY project of making Taters a carbon fiber ginormous wrench-shaped trekking pole For 'safety'
Did you notice how the "dirt" roads back east 40 miles were all white limestone and extremely dusty to what now appears to have sand over the limestone which controls the dust somewhat. You're moving into areas that have sand pits nearby and the townships start to use sand on the roads. Canton, McPherson, Lyons, Ellinwood, Great Bend etc. are all oil towns. You probably notice all the oil pumpers and tanks around. Had relatives at Great Bend but they all moved to either Wichita or Denver 50 years ago. Nothing for them there as their farms were small and pretty rough town.
I know I complain about people and their irresponsibility with their dogs, but I can’t help it…it drives me as nuts as people in Gatlinburg who don’t have bear proof garbage cans. I’m an East Tennessean through and through, and Kansas is making me appreciate where I was born even more lol.
Back east there were all corn fields and some bean fields. Now you're running into milo fields. The reason is because of less rainfall in that section of Kansas. At some point will run into more irrigation and back to corn.
Haven't been to Cheyenne Bottoms for a year or so but it's probably pretty dry out there right now. Don't expect too much. I love to do some bird photography when those areas are populated by migratory birds.
If at all possible. I’ve done the CDT before so I’m familiar with at least some of the route. That section the ADT followed something far easier than the CDT redline so we shall see
We’re getting some minor wind / dust related exfoliation here and there but have mostly been spared. Part of me has been wishing for a dust storm just because Jen’s never experienced one. I keep remembering Dirtmongers experience having to sleep in a ditch on the desert trail
I live in kansas i call it a sand trap been living here about ten years. First year i got here i got a rare form of lymes disease in a wreck the second year lung tumors my third year skin cancer my fourth year stomach ulcers my fifth year from all the alcohol to deal with this place, now im disabled & bed ridden. It took me many miserable winters waiting for summer barbacues to finally get it through my head not to look forward to summer barbacues as summer brings a sheet ton of flys here and they eat more of the bbq than i did. This place sucks so bad its a sand trap, no money to make here in order to get out, somtimes i wonder if the only way im gonna leave is the way you guys are passing through, only other way may be a pine box
@Griller1977 I'm trying I grew a garden this year and it's cut my food bill way down I'm saving as much as I can . I just can't take this place anymore thank you for your comment be blessed friend
Been watching and following you from the beginning, also a fellow hiker here….I so enjoy your videos and banter, but that part of the country you are walking through right now is so flat, hot and boring I do not know how you do it….makes me appreciate my mountains in the west.
For what it’s worth I spent 2023 & 2022 hiking the Continental divide trail watching people actively choose to walk the flat boring areas rather than cool mountains because it was easier… :)
This is the stuff of scifi futuristic movies...long road bent toward the horizion.Travelers walking with all they need to survive..trudging bouncing looking,observing...glad there are resupply stops, burrito restaurants and occasionally a kind interaction with other caring humans... perhaps the 👽 dog ship will pass by you all together...no worries of being bit,.they are so convincing in their outfits. So glad you take siestas and are near clean hydration ports .~~wishing electrolyte mixes to you both~~` stay safe, stay healthy. One can always NOT hike in the extreme heat. Its just as valid a reason as deep snow or flood waters....we just seem to push on anyway. S💀🥵olar Radiation the new 👁️....Take care young ones
Illegal show I listen to (and lots of examples in the news these last few years) you can sue for almost anything. Getting any sort of result out of said lawsuit is a whole other matter.
"Mennonite pitbulls"? That's funny but really not so funny. I'm Mennonite but wouldn't think of having any. Just have one Golden Retriever that hasn't bitten anyone.
Kansan here... damn you have a bad attitude. Kansas is one of the friendliest places in the US. The smoke is probably the burn-off of the Flint Hills. We burn it to keep it healthy. So in Kansas, unlike California, we start the fires.
Actually the smoke is from the massive forest fires burning in Canada right now and the wind blowing that smoke down towards Kansas and Colorado. Also as someone who has lived not only here in Kansas but also Colorado, Texas, and California; burning is not the only way to make things healthy. Last thing if you look into what causes most of the fires in California it actually is due to people starting them, just usually on accident. It is also alot easier to control a fire in the big open nothing that is Kansas instead of the thousands of acres of FORESTS that are in California plus all of the people and houses you have there compared to here.
This comment has become extra ironic as we’ve had more suspicion and police contact out here in west Kansas than I can remember vs any other state. But lots of nice folks as well
