Also for the POTA hunted question, there is a Chrome browser extension that shows you parks you have not made contact yet. That could be another way that operators know if they have worked your park before quickly.

That was a great experiment. I was thinking there would be at least one harmonic. I think your future experiment with tuned radials will be interesting.

Agree on the Yaesu user interface. My FT3D HT goes virtually unused because anything beyond basic operation quickly gets confusing, at least for me. Conversely my IC7300 seems to just have everything where I would think it should be.

Spot on regarding user experiences differences on Icom vs Yaesu. That was my deciding factor last year in picking the Icom 7300 and 705.

If the antenna is the proper length for a quarter wave on 14 MHz it will have Z~ 38 ohm with proper radials. It same antenna will be a half wave on 28 MHz and Z will be > 1000 ohm. If you make the antenna 12.3 feet tall it will be 3/8 wave on 10. You may then possibly use a 4:1 UNUN or perhaps a 9:1 and use the antenna on 20, 15 and 10m with a tuner. This would be a short Rybakov antenna. Note I did not try this or put it through modeling software. It is important not to have a half wavelength antenna.

Guess my mind is twisted, the Yaesu menu doesn’t bother me.

ditto, I’ve had icom, kenwood and yaesu radios. I can adjust to any of their menu systems

Mmmm… I’ve been mobile only for about 17 years due to housing that’s only friendly to temporary antennas. (Long story.) About 21-22 months ago, I decided to push getting Mobile DXCC. I’m currently at 64/100. That might sound like I’ve made peace with the 891’s menu system. …I have NOT! I do plan to remote the head to the sun visor, which will help, but I would be a LOT happier if, for example, I was using a Kenwood TS-480SAT so I have quicker..safer access while driving…access to the controls. Mind, I ran a FT-817ND as my mobile radio for several years so you’d think it would be an easy transition to go from the 817ND to the 891 but the 891 has so much more available to adjust that there’s little resemblance.

Mike jumped up to do the legwork! I'm betting that a vertical with tuned radials may have resonant bands. My fan dipole hanging in the trees by my house has 80/40/20 meter elements and also works great on 15 and 10. Thanks for the video Mike!

Yaesu menus are rough. I’m use to it using the 891 portable and mobile for a while. But I’ll take the user friendly menus of Icom any day. What’s that other brand? Can’t remember the name, use to be huge and popular. Kenwood, that’s it!

Mike, Something I've wanted to try was the vertical tuned to one frequency and half the radials tuned to the main freq and half of them tuned to the harmonic. I would even lay them out so every other one would be for a different freq. 20/10/20/10, etc. Love the channel... party on dude!

As per others' comments the IC-705... a glimpse of the Icom future (when you see the 905)? The idea of using CAt5/6 could be very interesting in the 7300 "replacement".

All I can afford is old radios, such as my TS-430S and TS-670, So I am obligated to throw out my jealousy quote: "If I wanted a menu, I'd go to a restaurant!" (We'll just keep it between us that the TS-990S is my dream radio)

The Yaesu menus are 100 times better in their newer radios... The older radios like the 891 & 818 had horrible menus. The 991/991-A menu was a bit better compared to the 891 or 818, but with the DX10 & 710 they're AMAZINGLY BETTER.

I like Yaesu but the only reason I’ve been sticking with Icom is that Yaesu don’t know how to make waterfalls PERIOD! Always frozen, lagging and crappy, not as smooth and vibrate like Icom. If one day Yaesu figure it out I’ll be more the happy to go back to Yaesu. Almost purchased the new Yaesu 710 last Black Friday and thanks God I watched a video here in YT and saw how crappy is the waterfall, threw me off right away. Not even with the great idea of the HDMI output

It would be great if POTA tracked the parks you worked under a separate tab on their site. I too get the “ thanks for a new park” seconds after I give my park, seconds. That’s made me wonder also.

Im a pretty big fan of my ftdx3000 but i never go into the menus my ft891 i hate it works i just don't really like the radio the ic7410 i had was ok didn't really have it long and didn't use it much so i lives with my dad now anf my ft101e has knobs and switches so almost every is right on the front downside of the radio is tuneing it also no general coverage receive

I only have a 705 and a ft5dr. If they are an indicator of the "user friendliness" of each manufacturer, then Yaesu should buy an icom rig and see how its supposed to be done. I dont care if a yaesu receiver is 3% better if i cant stand navigating the rig

Icom or yaesu, as long as I can talk and make contact, I don't care. They're both kick ass radios.

I know that you're all about resonant antennas (antennae?). Retry your experiment with a manual tuner. I have tuned 40 meter antennas to every band with a shorter length, because I'm a cheap-ass. The wolf river coil is basically an antenna tuner. EDIT: because alcohol

Used both Yaesu and Icom own 2 Yaesu radios and I will tell you I still prefer Icom. I likely will go back to a 7610 when finances allows again just for ease of use. With that said the Yaesu radios have great quality just the menus suck

Will the cigarette 12volt put out anymore than 12volts? My 857D likes more. Does it matter if my radio only gets 12 volts? Thanks for the video.

The new Icom IC-905 is a very big deal, but only if you care about V/U/SHF. The 7300/9700 are a pretty formidable pair. Yaesu has nothing like these.

the 17' will work on the other bands if you have a G90 tuner will handle it. Not very efficient but you can stay on your butt lol

you are dead right.... all these new rigs perform more or less that same but the menu structure and how easy they are to use can be a deal killer or maker. Honestly the performance difference can be detected only with specialized test equipment, but out in the field and in your shack, there is no practacal differenc.... it is all in the menu structure, the human interface.

In before "But The IC-705 was released 2 years ago, Mike". 😉 A follow up on the last part, can you tune say a 17 foot whip to 1/4 wave 20 and 5/8 wave 20 and 1/2 wave 20. Or same with 10. In other words, can you get 3 resonance points by adjusting the whip to 1/4 wave, 5/8 wave and 1/2 wave on a long whip? BTW, the first part of the video was something I have wondered as well. Thanks Mike.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 8 месяцев назад
Ah but the 705 isn't a 100 watt radio either. You wouldn't be able to tune the 17' whip to a 1/2 or 5/8 wave because that would require a longer whip.
@vladtepes481
@vladtepes481 8 месяцев назад
Note a 17 Ft whip is too short for 5/8 on 20m and 1/2 wavelength will have a super high impedance so it wont work.
@don_n5skt
@don_n5skt 8 месяцев назад
@@hamradiotube On 10/12 you would be able to test 1/2 or 5/8 but yes on 20 you are correct.

The menus on the FTDX10 and 101 are a lot better. I have had both and like them both really like the 7610.

I agree! I have the IC-7100, IC-7300 and FTdx10. All are easy to use, but the FTdx10 is definitely the best receiver! Having said that, the Yaesu still has few quirks when it comes to operation of the VFO knob, band changing, mouse implementation, etc. Nothing that is a deal-breaker, just annoyances.
