Hi, my name is Luke "Playa T." Clebsch. Thank you for watching another one of my free harmonica lessons, "Harmonica Basics 14: How to Play the 12 Bar Blues Form".
One reason harmonica players too often get a bad rap is because they don't know the blues form, so they are not playing the appropriate thing at the appropriate time. If you want to play the blues, you've got to pay your dues, and you have got to know this form!
I chord = 2draw (or 3 blow) or 2,3,4 draw
IV chord = 1blow, 4, blow (or 123 blow, 456 blow, 789 blow)
V chord = 1 draw, 4 draw
The turnaround are the last 2 bars of the 12 bar blues because they "turn" us around back to the top of the tune. Here is the harmonica tabs in C for the quintessential blues harmonica turnaround lick that I play:
2-2- 3-3-(bent half-step) 4+4+ 4-4-(bent half-step) 4-(released) (slide down to) 1- 1+ 1-
I hope that you have found this harmonica lesson, "Harmonica Basics 14 - How to Play the 12 Bar Blues Form" to be helpful.Thank you again for watching. If you have any further questions, leave a comment for the video or connect with me via

A good lesson,you find that some experts only do lessons so that they can show off, but this is very informative . Cheers.

Great lesson, Luke! As someone who has played the harp on and off since 1998, I've become much more serious and studious in my approach to it recently. I realize now that I never really knew it all that well from the beginning and it's time to get back to the basics such as the 12 bar Blues, chordal rhythm, timing, etc. This lesson will greatly help improve my playing and I will focus on practising it for at least an hour a day. Thank You for passing on your knowledge to players like me.

That's right, Ian! You got it, bra! You're playing the root of each chord in the 12-bar blues (in any octave.) That is an EXCELLENT exercise, as well as a very appropriate thing to play on gigs/recordings in some scenarios. Varying the rhythms is the key to expressing your emotions/artistry. Another great exercise is singing the roots of the chords (try doing it along with your favorite blues recording.) That will help you learn the harmony on a deeper level which frees your intuition.

Thanks Luke! I just sat and played with some guys, who have been trying to get me to jam with them for a while, last night. We had a good time and eventually got it together to play some improv stuff but I was getting "those" looks from everyone but the drummer. Having always played alone I was stomping all over everyone else not knowing "when to shout and when to shut up" Thanks for breaking this down for me. Next week is gonna rock!!

Greetings Luke, I've been following you and really love your style of teaching. I agree that tabs would be very helpful for folks like me who have no music theory behind us. As Branislav mentions, tabs on the video for short licks and perhaps in the comments for longer ones. Thanks for all you do....very beneficial IMO.

first cord = G B D F# notes forth cord = C E G B notes fifth cord = D F A C notes all that played in one through 4 holes Form is notes that you can play in the particular bar so licks and riffs according to notes they have, can be played only in corresponding bar is that right ?
@LukeClebschPlayaT
@LukeClebschPlayaT 2 года назад
Hey David - you're close: I chord = G B D F (-2 -3 -4 -5) IV chord = C E G Bb (1 2 3 -3') V chord = D F# A C (-1 -2' -3'' 4) Hitting notes in the cord will sound good. But you can play the Blues scale throughout the whole song and it will sound great: -2 -3' 4 -4' -4 -5 6 So it's not that strict. You might like checking out my video on chords here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0qVSuayeV_I.html Also, my video on blues here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JNSfYblG1oY.html Hope that helps! I think info section is good enought for tabs, maybe if some song is harder to learn u can put tabs in video and play it slower... and songs...more Blues offcourse, Country (cowboy) music and maybe some Irish Folk songs like Star of County Down, or Rocky Road to Dublin etc., that could be cool...I would like to see how you play them...you can add some blues elements into it..I'm playing on Big River Harp i hope i will catch up with you :)

Hey luke.. not sure if I got this right but as long as I play each chord in the right position.. I can then mix up wich hole I play for the chords? So like this -2-2-2-2 44-2-2 -4 4-2-2..for example.. hope I got the tabs right there.

@FunkyHarp
@FunkyHarp 10 лет назад
2 blow means blowing on the second hole from the left (with the number 2 above it) 3 draw means breathing in on the third hole, etc...

cheers im Ryan, i play a bit of guitar. could get a sing song going but thats about how far my talents stretch always wanted to learn the moothie. just got my first one. only been two days and think im doing pretty dam good. im really not picking up what the chords up at all. could you point me in the direction for good explanation for chords, or if you could find the time to message me a diagram. would be so much appreciated. cheers bud hope to hear back
@FunkyHarp
@FunkyHarp 10 лет назад
Short, simple answer: On a C harp, when you blow you are playing a C chord, when you draw, you're playing a G chord. Am and Em are related to C, so blowing will work for them too. Dm and Bm7b5 are related to G so drawing covers them. D or D7 you'd just draw 1 or 4 or both using the octaves technique: Harmonica Basics XVI - Learn to Play Harmonica Octaves (+good blues outro lick) Hope that's helpful to get you pointed in the right direction...

Thanx for the lesson, but if you play along with John Lee you'll learn about 13 bar blues, cause the turn around comes when John Lee decides it does.
@FunkyHarp
@FunkyHarp 10 лет назад
Yes, DJ! Robert Johnson also has some 13 bars. It wasn't until around that time that the 12 Bar was finally adopted as standard to make it easy for any musicians to play together.

You keep jumping back and forth with terms and only explain some of which chord is which holes (blow or draw). Try using one or the other, not both at the same time, occasionally. Going fast the whole time didn't help. But thanks. IF I already know a bit, I can follow you but a pure beginner would have been sitting there saying to himself, "HUH?" Also, cross harp for C is F, not G (four notes away includes the first position key itself).
@FunkyHarp
@FunkyHarp 9 лет назад
Hey - thanks for your comments. Cross-harp for C is indeed G, my friend. You're close though, as cross-harp for an F harp is C. You just go up a Perfect 5th for cross-harp key. Here's a good PDF about positions from the Lee Oskar website: www.leeoskarquickguide.com/docs/KeyCharts.pdf I know I go a little fast, but this is my 14th Harmonica Basics video, so I'm assuming I'm not talking to a completely brand-new beginner, and I figure the viewer can rewind/re-watch the video until understanding is complete. I think if you watch the video a few times, it should all come into focus. I don't quite understand your confusion on the terminology. But if you can re-phrase what exactly you're unclear on, I'd be happy to try and help! Peace, Luke
