Jonathan Scott performs a selection of French harmonium music on the 1860's Debain harmonium at Clayton Hall, Manchester. This 15th century moated manor house was once home to Sir Humphrey Chetham, the Founder of Chetham's School, Manchester, where we both studied. We hope you enjoy this rarely heard and expressive music in this wonderful setting (full programme below). Thank you to everyone at Clayton Hall Living History Museum. Jonathan & Tom

I remember Jonathan's rare Mustel Harmonium from a home Christmas concert. That type of instrument was once common in the U.S. too. They were often the first organ for churches in rural areas and more numerous in homes than pianos. From Chicago, U.S.A.

My aunt had something similar in a very rural area of East Tennessee known as Paint Rock. It only had a single keyboard and it was like running a marathon to pump it. We only knew it as a "pump organ". I personally haven't seen it since the 1970's. Last I heard, it was in her son's possession.

What a lovely video. Wonderful to hear the harmonium and some unfamiliar repertoire. The Lemmens Fanfare is one of my favourite organ pieces and it’s great to hear it on the harmonium - a totally different sound!

Absolutely wonderful to hear these lesser known pieces, played on the harmonium. I'm sure you'll find many others to play. I do hope so.

I really enjoy the sound of the harmonium. The engineering behind it and the dexterity of the player it assumes is amazing. I'm especially impressed by the knee levers. As always, Jonathan shows off the full power of this instrument well, and Tom brings that to us in the video with great effect. Thank you!

A few weeks ago my attention was drawn to a plaque on St Ann's Well, Great Malvern, to 'Blind George' Pullen (1866 - 1936). Blind from birth, he made his living as a pianist, organist - and harmoniumist. According to the plaque, he played the harmonium in the building at the well (a tea room, sweet shop and home combined) for over fifty years. We don't know what instrument he played - it would be nice to imagine it was a two-manual Debain - or what he played. But Jonathan gives us a few ideas here which help to fill in the gaps. I do wonder about the poor harmonium in what must have been cold and damp building for much of the year. Excellent camerawork and editing from Tom, as usual. So professional that it's easy to take it for granted.

It produces sound in a very similar manner to an accordion. Both rely on sending vibrations through free reeds.
