Im actually curious what red velvet and seohyun's parents reactions were when they told them "ah mom and dad, im going north korea to perform as part of the peace concert" xPP seriously though as if their parents wouldve let them go so easily (even though this is mostly in SM anyway)
it must have been so hard for them to perform, not only because they were so nervous, but also because they had to remember to cover joy's parts as well as sing their own, it's unfortunate that they couldn't be there as a full group. :(
I see a lot of people here don't seem to understand why the audience is like this - I am from Bulgaria, an ex communist country, where by the way our "leader" wasn't nearly as bad as theirs, and still, people were being watched - what they say, how they react, etc, etc. Anything could be reported to the government, and you can be punished accordingly. These people here in the audience are not reacting out of FEAR - they live in a country where they can be punished / executed over anything. It's sad. They're expressionless because they don't have a choice and they'd rather not risk being seen reacting to something that might be later deemed inappropriate or against the country's morals. This is how their lives are, it has nothing to do with how Red Velvet did or what they think of that.
I think that the audience doesn't know how to react because they are forbidden to enjoy anything that belongs to the west, I am also sure that they are overwhelmed by the performance. just think of all the words that Red Velvet used which the north Koreans doesn't understand, so it's just understandable
Kudos to red velvet for being able to finish their performance without any errors esp from performing in an audience as stoic and reactionless like this. Idols and performers in general receive happiness, energy and love from the cheers of the audience, this could have been a scary and sad experience for them. So really. I salute red velvet!! 💕💖💯

To some people who talks bad about the reactions of North Korean. Here is the reason. North Korea is so much different than South Korea. NK and SK used to separated and not as one country that's why they have different presidents. North Korea are not used to things like artists and all about performances like this. Their discipline is so much stricter than those South Korea that's why they didn't scream and instead only clapping. Try go to NK and shouts when you watch artists performing and see what will NK do to you.
LOL. South and North Korea are basically the same culture, except separated by 65 years. The way this audience acts is exactly how the old generation of South Koreans would act if they attended a K-pop performance today. That is to say, mainstream North Korean society is a carbon copy of how South Korea used to be in the 1960s-'70s -- i.e., regimented, militaristic, disciplined, reserved, stoic and isolated from the rest of the world. After South Korea became more prosperous starting in the mid-80s and democratized starting in the early '90s, South Korea started relaxing and becoming more open to other countries, foreign travel, and less rigid and militaristic. This only happened as result of economic, political and social breakthroughs happening in South Korea all around the early '90s. This hasn't happened in North Korea yet, so they're still acting like it's the 1960s Cold War era, which b/c of the U.S., is very much true.
It is not even slightly connected to discipline god damn it. SK is very disciplined too cause SK was ruled by dictators most of the time and so what? These nkreans just too adult for these childish songs...
Anyone who has ever done a stage performance knows how much of a difference the audience energy makes. If the audience is enjoying themselves, it hypes the performers up too. I can't imagine how insanely difficult it is to perform for an audience that looks at you like you're giving a lecture....
I think what might have helped is that they knew the audience didn't really mean it, they were told to stay impassive so it was not as if the audience didn't like it
I don’t really know what you guys are expecting from the citizens of NORTH KOREA?? They’re not gonna do fanchants, they’re not gonna cheer, and they probably don’t feel like smiling since they realize they’re being broadcast and watched. There’s another comment down below that goes more in depth on how the audience is probably being very careful about their reactions because they’re constantly being watched, so y’all should try and read that before being so aggressive.
Carol We know but it still doesn't change the fact that it's still hard to watch If I ever become a performer and had to perform in a dead crowd I don't know what I would do maybe make so many mistakes or piss myself.Kudos to them must be twice as hard performing in front of Kim Jun un and to NK people. Its North korea for goodness sake, the citizens have never experienced something like this ,they have never heard this song or this type of music. what do u all expect them to do??? They r gonna give thier full attention to them and focus bc it most likely they arent gonna see or hear music outside of Nk and the seating is a formal setting not a legit concert and plus with kim jong un watching too its better to sit in their seats and watch instead of screaming and going wild like how how fans would do at a normal concert
And actually what you said is not completly true. They actually know a lot about Kpop, Kdramas and even about some american stuff. It gets smuggled all around the country. It totally illegal but a lot of people do it. Many years ago they didn't have any connections with south korea but now they have more possibilities. Oh and the audience was all upper class people since the workers (most people of the country) would never be allowed to be on that kind of thing. So 1. They definetly heard a lot about Kpop even if illegal since they can bribe to not be imprisoned or to have any other consequences and the upper class definetly has the means to do so. Also 2. They are probably supposed to react like that, since how said they're the upper class and can't make mistakes in front of Kim Jong Un to loose their status, I guess. I don't exactly know if all the things are completely right since probably nobody really knows that, but I got all these informations from the biography of a refugee who escaped from North Korea so I hope they are not completely wrong. (Sorry if I made any mistakes, english is not my native language, but I would actually be happy if you'd correct my mistakes😊)
You're definitely right! I myself have actually personally met a few North Korean refugees a few years ago and heard them talk about their own stories, and it's super common now for North Koreans (especially the younger generations) to regularly listen to South Korean media that's been smuggled in. There's a whole black market for it. And it's become so common that it's one of those things where like, basically everyone does it and everyone *knows* that everyone does it, but you still don't talk about it hahaha.
Angribee well sk language is more Americanized or they use other modern term. While nk is just isolated. (Anyone please explain it more clearly please! 😂)
People have to understand that North koreans aren't used to this kind of music. They don't know k-pop, they don't know Red Velvet, they don't know the lyrics and - again - they aren't used to this. In other hand, they were very respectful, watching it and clappping in the end. It's going to take a long time to that people to get along with each other and understand about their costumes.
You are not wrong, these aspects could also contribute for their reaction, but I'm working more with facts and we know that both countries are separed for many years, so their cultural construction since they separated are quite different. North koreans aren't used to songs with english words on it or korean women dancing with shorts and make up, this is something very different from their reality. But, like I said, you're not wrong, the paranoia is constant, indeed.
Probably, but this is not a fact. Let's say that is true, then it's very correct for them to not react Red Velvet, since they are very deep into north korea's regime. If they reacted well to the south korea culture that would mean a serious treason.

I honestly don’t think it’s provocativeness I think it’s the fact the North Korea doesn’t want their people to see how much better music, choreo, hair, outfits are in the outside world and how much more free people are . this might increase defectors which isn’t what they want.
seohyun performed a song of north korea, which is politically correct in the north. However, listening to pop songs from the south is a felony in normal situations.

By being quite, the North Koreans actually show respect to the performers. It's just how it is in North Korea. It doesn't mean that that they didn't like it.
Wow.. I felt the tension as they were performing.. I'm a musician too and if the audience is unresponsive or stone faced it can be very unnerving... These girls are professionals.. Thank you ladies for your contribution to the peace effort! *hugz*

I admire the girls for giving their best and based on this video the reactions of the audience within the performance is understandable, ofc this kind of performance is new to them, (that's why Red Velvet are there to represent/show the kind of music of what idol groups make) like we can't expect them to clap throughout the performance. In my opinion instead of the audience being bored i think they are more on observing the performance.
It must feel so new to Red Velvet to perform to such quiet audience. It gives more tension. But then, well done for keeping the fresh performance despite the pressure. 😘
