This movie changed my life, and have stayed my real favourite. I was 14 and quite depressed and suicidal, and my sister not-so-innocently decided to put the movie on while I was at her place. This movie taught me the first steps about how to live, and still today I haven't forgotten Maude's lessons about how to be free, yourself and happy.

It changed my outlook on life too. I was 17 when I first saw this movie back in 1973. It had been out since 1971, and already had a cult following. My mom and I were hooked from the beginning. We would go all over the valley, Hollywood, and West LA to see it at what ever theater was showing it. I still love Sunflowers to this day and have them all over my bedroom walls. I bought all the Cat Stevens CDs so I could have all the music from the movie. Glad it changed your outlook too!!

SOME people will probably call this film unconventional, distasteful and even disgusting because of the age difference in their relationship but there's something so beautifully sweet about it that you forget the age gap. Some people who don't respect cinema that's different and quirky probably won't like this film, but I personally love it. It is so adorable and feels so new and old at the same time. I lowkey watched it yesterday and have since watched it three times. Idk, it's definitely not for everyone but if you enjoy falling in love with the chemistry and sweetness of two characters, you'll love this. SORRY For THe essay fam xx

The concept of this sort of love may not please the masses but do know that "grossing out" people was hardly the point of this movie. I wish the movie made it more obvious that Maude was a Holocaust survivor. (There is a quick shot in the movie of the character's arm and you can see a death camp tattoo.) That knowledge about that character brings more depth to the movie and helps you understand her.
@adollfordolls
@adollfordolls 10 лет назад
I like that they didn't focus on it or even mention it that much. If she had focused on it in the movie she wouldn't be the same person and it certainly didn't make him think any different of her. I'm glad they didn't make such a big fuss of it because it's what made her who she was and she lived in the present for 80 years, why look back then?

I seen no such thing in the movie. During the scene where they're dancing, Maude is wearing an outfit that bears her arms from elbow to hand, and I couldn't see any tattoos that suggested she survived Hitler's death camps. There's also no suggestions towards her being from Europe, or being Jewish. While there's no suggestions to her being into women, it's not impossible to imagine, but I can't any proof that she's a survivor of the Holocaust, nor any way it would tie into the story. She seems infinitely happy, utterly carefree, seeing the world as a playground. Doesn't sound like the kind of attitude someone would take up after experiencing starvation, degradation, mass murder, not to mention potentially torture and humiliation. If you can point out the time in the movie where you can see this death camp tattoo though, I'll be happy to look it up and admit that I'm wrong. To be honest though, if I indeed AM wrong, and there IS a death camp tattoo, I don't think it would help the movie at all.
@adollfordolls
@adollfordolls 9 лет назад

@NormanMatchem

CoCoCat Just watched the scene, seen no such thing, which would have been doubly obvious if Harold himself noticed it. Another reason why it would make no sense for her to be a Holocaust survivor; she apparently turned 80 in 1971. That means from 1942-1945, she was in her 50s, making her suffrage from malnutrition and hard labour even more difficult. Those who were too old and frail or too young and inept to work hard labour were often the first to go. In all honesty, I think Lamarr168, CoCoCat, and hyena131 are all the same person. Why you'd want to try to lie to people, I don't understand.

I remember seeing the trailer for this movie as a kid while at a movie theater back in 1971 and I thought all of these years that it was based on the premise that Harold was miserable and suicidal due to the high demands of Maude for which made him codependent. He just looked so innocent and in pain! This movie trailer never left my mind but Boy, was I so wrong as I saw the movie for the first time just this past weekend!! What I really liked about the movie was that Maude accepted Harold even though he was “different”. This was very key to me. She did not judge him and allowed him to just be who he was. Those who are “different” constantly face rejection and that is why he fell for Maude. Don’t sweet the small stuff - Just be free for how you were designed to be. Don’t let fear interfere nor lessen your sense of well being and confidence is the message I received from this movie.

I just watched the movie. starting off I didn't like it, and thought to myself "what the hell am I watching" as I found it to be utterly bizarre. however, as the movie progressed I began to get a grasp of it's surreal tone and realised that his suicide attempts are symbolic for the "walking corpse" that his mother shaped him out to be. When he meets Maude, she gives him a reason to live life to the fullest, and not worry about any forms of judgement. what a truly beautiful movie.

From time to time I rewatch this movie, it always gets my spirits up. I also recommend it to all the people I discuss movies with, if they did not see it. Never met a person that did not like it. The movie is just beautiful and filled with life lessons. What I take from the movie... Live your life in whatever way it makes you happy, do not tie your happiness to other people and make the best of it. I think Maude through her life tragedies came up to that philosophy and tried to teach Harold it. Because Harold was a clearly a depressed young man, no one around listening to him and lacking his mothers affection. I really liked the way they completed each other, one old adventurer with no one to share and one young man seeking an adventure in their life.

Saw Harold and Maude for the first time, in high school, during the seventies. For awhile, once a month, my school had an "activities day". With 3 or 4 activities to chose from. Like go to the zoo, ice skate, etc, or stay at school and see a movie. The first activities day, they offered Harold and Maude. Attendance was so packed, for the next activities day, they put a limit on how many students could attend the movie. So for the next one, I chose ice skating, instead of seeing Rosemary's Baby. All these decades later, I'm still glad about both choices.

This movie was for us who really loved the 1970s. The 70s was a decade of not only self awareness, but awareness of all those around us. And, don't forget, we were questioning the very nature of why things were they way they were. Those of us born before 1960 sure got the meaning of the film. If you were born after 1960 and appreciated this movie, then you turned out pretty good and are a decent human being.

Born in 1993. This film saved my life. It was on the Ovation channel the evening of my first and last suicide attempt. Maude gave me just what I needed to fall in love with life and I needed to meet her so much, just like Harold did.

I was in high school when thus came out. What a great movie and what a great era when Hollywood was still a place that turned out WTF films like this that would never get greenlit today. Not that there aren't still fine indie films today but this was just so fresh and completely unself conscious whereas now it would probably be more "look at me, aren't I quirky" I think.

I used to love this movie, it was my mother's favorite movie, and when she was dying of cancer she watched this movie with me like a hundred times. It doesn't really associate with good memories for me, but it's still a nice movie, even if it is kinda messed up

In the end Harold realises how precious life is. This is because of Maude's impact on his life. Harold could quite have easily have killed himself by staying in the car when it went over the edge of the cliff at the end of the film, but he didn't! This can only mean that he'd come to terms with his mental problem thanks to the influence that Maude had on his life. Fantastic film with lots of meaning for a good many people. Just watch it and you'll see!!

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it when I was 14, 20 some years ago. I thought it was interesting that she taught him to live while he give her the final party so she could really die without regret. It was one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen.

Like my brother says, Hollywood has run out of ideas and can't leave well enough alone. This is a one time gem--no remake would ever come close to capturing the magic.

Spoiler alert! I saw this film last night for the first time in a few years and remains a Top 20 in cinematic history. Director Hal Ashby (The Last Detail, Shampoo, Being There) demonstrates his political and social conscience in his films, and this is his greatest achievement, IMHO. But the cinematography of John A. Alonzo (Chinatown, Vanishing Point) is what makes this film a masterpiece. The specular highlights he captures in the swimming pool scene is sumptuous and regal. The scene of the thousands of headstones in the Presidio (San Francisco) National Cemetery clearly demonstrates Ashby’s opinion of war. But the scene that explains EVERYTHING about Maude’s love of life - and it’s only onscreen for a split second - is when Harold notices the death camp numbers tattooed on her arm.

Agree wholeheartedly. The cinematography is superb. The tatoo on her wrist is painful. In a way (apart from similar titles) it reminds me of Bob Dylan's Renaldo and Clara.

I first saw this great film around 1978, instantly it became my favourite all time. It still is. I paid a small fortune for the VHS copy when the system was new, then bought the DVD. I've not upgraded to Bluray yet, but when I do this'll be the first film I will buy.

I worked in a Jewish area here in Montreal. Alot of older people would always be at this mall that I worked at. This one elderly lady came in one day to the store where I worked, and she was just being nasty and really pushing my buttons. The cash counter where I worked was kind of high up so she pretty much had to lift her arm high to pay. When she lifted her arm I could see something on her wrist and right away in my head I was "no fcking way !!!!" ..my heart started racing and before I knew it I had blurted out to the lady what is that on your wrist? a tattoo? ( I pretty much knew but had to be sure) and she pulls up her sleeve and shows me and tells me she was in a concentration camp. I was at a loss for words and she proceeded to tell me a bit about her past and in an instant that touch exterior lady who walked in the store was soft and gentle and kind as she recalling a bit of her past to me. We hugged before she left the store. I never met a concentration camp survivor before, and it was a moment I will never forget.

I watched this movie in 1987 as part of an English college course where we had to critique films. The teacher was in love with this movie in large part because it was set in the 1970s at time when he had come to Canada as a Vietnam War draft-dodger. If I remember correctly the movie was about a young man who was fascinated by death and he was shown the meaning of life by this (much) older woman.

One of the things about this film is that the sex aspect is actually a minor part of the story. It happens near the end and is good for some hilarious scenes with the priest and psychiatrist but the film's charm is in watching the growing friendship between Harold and Maude and in Harold's growth as a person under Maude's tutelage.

BTW, from the script from Harold and Maude. HAROLD Shall I drop by tomorrow? (remembers) Oh, I have a luncheon date. With this girl. MAUDE Oh. HAROLD I've never met her. My mother set it up. MAUDE ........... As Maude is talking and looking out to sea, Harold looks down at her hand in his. She is not wearing a long-sleeved dress and we see a number tattooed on her skin: P-876954. Maude doesn't notice but Harold is visibly shocked.
