I very much hope that Prof. Bloom recognizes the immensity of his achievement. It's easy to despair when considering what has become of mainstream culture in the United States, but he's right about the myriad "solitary deep readers." Through his books he has been and continues to be my teacher.

one of the last true literates of today's world of ubiquitous technology. A Joyce of the critique. A true genius.

One of the giants who walked the earth. Profoundly missed. Thankfully he left a vast body of work and he continues to be our teacher.

This man tried to warn us, he truly did, he was right, we didn't listen to him. Look at the situation now!

Given Harold Bloom’s self reported reading speed of just under 1,000 pages per hour (in his youth) and the high regard he has for reading, he’s one of the few people who probably has read all the books he would like to read. But either way, if he was offered an opportunity to get another degree for 2-3 years or just write or teach or just read for those 2-3 years, I wonder what he would choose mainly to understand where reading books he hadn’t already read to know what his philosophy is about where reading is prioritized compared to other options.

"The truth nowadays is pretty dreadful, culturally speaking and intellectually speaking." I doubt he'd say it's rebounded in the intervening years lol
