Of the Big 3, Harold might have been the one who audiences could most identify with. The most human of all of them. No costume, no stone face, just a young man making his way in the world. He's my favorite of him, Chaplin and Keaton.

In 2019 Keaton and Chaplin are still revered names in comedy, and they should be, but in my opinion Harold Lloyd deserves to be just as much of a household name as they are.

Yes, but two things hurt him. Keeping his films off television, except for snippets until the 70's and believe it or not this very Oscar! It was in 1953 an obvious dig ("A good citizen") by the Academy against Chaplin during the McCarthy HUAC period,. By the 60's Hollywood had turned Left so the intelligentsia, the film schools and the film critics couldn't hate them anymore so they took it out on Harold Lloyd, the Eisenhower Republican in his mansion in Beverly Hills. Unfair, but fact.

The timing of this award and the whole “good citizen” thing was a veiled shot at Chaplin. A shame, because Harold was great and deserves this anyway.

Lloyd was the 1 from the 3 at that time imo. More laughs and more believable except for the clock scene which is again imo the greatest piece of work ive ever seen 👍✌

There's a long clip of Harold Lloyd from 1953 when he was a mystery guest on the panel show What's My Line? It's here on RU-vid.

Too bad the President of the Academy Mr. Brackett failed to add this: Harold Lloyd was one of the actors (Pickford and Fairbanks were some of the others) who helped found the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences 25 years or so before this ceremony. Look it up. So in a small way, the Oscars were brought to you by Harold too.

Thank you! I love Harold, one great comedian getting his award from one of the greatest comedy writers! Does anyone know if he's wearing his special glove that hides his missing fingers? It doesn't look like he is.

Of course, Brackett won his Oscar for writing Titanic, not a comedy! Harold Lloyd so deserved this Oscar but he also deserved better than a 1 minute slot and 15 seconds of applause. He's one of the greatest figures in film history.

Charlie Chaplin never ever made me laugh I haven't seen Buster Keaton but Harold Lloyd was a different class. Harold Lloyd was always on TV in the UK when I was growing up along with Laurel and Hardy, didn't see much of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton no one was interested.

Keaton is probably my favorite of the three. I would say he is the best physical comedian of all time, and that’s saying a lot.

Same here 👍. Was never interested in Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Even Laurel and Hardy left me cold. Something vulnerable and real about his "glasses character" that made him interesting 👍

The "good citizen" add-on was a completely unnecessary jibe at Chaplin, who in 1953 was considered anything but. It must have irked Lloyd slightly that his award citation was made at the expense of someone else.
