This is such a great lecture, and Alan Johnson certainly did justice to Harold Wilson's achievements. I was lucky enough to attend this lecture and it is so nice to be able to view it again. This is definitely setting the bar very high for an annual event!

Harold Wilson was without doubt the best Prime Minister in the 20th century.

What if Chamberlain was right with rearmament, with flying to Germany, leading to guarantee Poland and his decision for Churchill PM? All he endured from critics such as continue to this day, a supposed appeaser! If the supposition is wrong, he truly did a remarkable job, and died early because of the constant work. Wilson wished image of a complacent man, holidaying in Germany, however I think Chamberlain earned his visits and Churchill acknowledged Chamberlain to work longer hours than himself, and a few years age disparity. Edit, disappointing that Wilsons take on Chamberlain was highly political and unworthy of history.

@@sglenny001 Wilson spoke of turning to past experience to solve problems, and Chamberlain did much the same - finding the advice of Canning who died whilst PM in 1827. Someone on the left said of Chamberlain He should have been a Labour man Acknowledgement of Chamberlains concern for ordinary people, said in the 1930s.

@@robertewing3114 Chamberlain's only mistake was in forming an unworkable military pact with fascist Poland after it had invaded Czechoslovakia in 1938-39. He should have pressured the anti-Semitic regime in Warsaw more heavily to allow a referendum on Danzig.

That was a magnificent lecture about a Prime Minister who achieved so much for Britain. Unfortunately, extreme politicos never stopped smearing his name, regardless of the fact that there was no evidence at all to support their outrageous allegations, which included Wilson being a Soviet agent. Harold truly put the fear of God into the establishment.

Wilson was confirmed to have been a Soviet agent, like Foot. His premiership was a complete disaster that led to Britain going to the IMF.
