He's got it figured out that a good, long chase gives him time to enjoy the "flesh of his labours", so to speak ... no dummies, those Hariss' Hawks! Not sure if you might have seen the video of 3 Hariss' Hawks hunting squirrels in Georgia (USA), really teaming up on those tree rats! Amazing animal teamwork.

My Harris hawk , when he went down to hunt, as long as he caught the bird, we took our hand to release the animal he caught my hand too. but he always grabbed my hand, do you know how we train Harry so that he does not catch Harris? Our hands when we take food it catches hand . I watched the youtube video of the animals as if they were not caught hands, please tell me about the traning harris hawk.

Excellent video. Enjoyed the dog as much as the Harris hawk. As a life long falconer in the US, I've learned to appreciate a good hunting dog (and even a not so good one, to be honest). The Hawks learn what the dog is all about in minutes. Amazing, really. Cheers.

Sounds great, good fitness! I have lots of free time so I'm lucky enough to be able to fly mine through the moult. Have done for 6 years with no problems at all. Fit as butchers dogs!

I'm assuming the bells are to find the hawk more easily in the trees and brush but do they affect the hunting at all? Like alerting the prey
@teddielilly3799
@teddielilly3799 4 года назад
Gsdontbeefonline str8up that’s what you want for the prey to be flushed the bell doesn’t affect the hunting because a Harris hawk chases its prey anyway
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 4 года назад
Gsdontbeefonline str8up Yes bells are to help identify your bird in hard cover. I can imagine sometimes it helps prey evade capture but most of the time the element of surprise, speed, experience and cunning from the raptors perspective helps them succeed.
@liamoneill9793
@liamoneill9793 4 года назад
@@hawkinsfalconry that's awesome I would love to do this but don't have the time needed to properly care for one, I did help out a young redtail on the road by my house the other day I almost hit him because he was eating a partridge in the middle of the road so I pulled over and threw it as far as could so he could enjoy his meal without becoming roadkill it's sad I see quite a few dead hawks and owls on the roads in my area
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 4 года назад
Gsdontbeefonline str8up Yes it’s certainly a way of life that consumes vast amounts of time if you want to do it properly. It’s good that you realise you can’t dedicate the time and act out of respect for the bird. A lot of bird keepers in the UK would benefit from the common sense approach that you adopt. Good on you for helping the wild population, they need it! Life is hard enough for them in the wild. All the best Nigel.

So where do you hunt I have a Harris hawk but no where to hunt
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 5 лет назад
ttv Infininfinite You should have acquired land to fly on before even thinking about getting into falconry. How do you think you get hunting land? Get out there and knock farmers doors and offer your services for free. Do some work on a farm etc. The list is endless. The more land the better. I wouldn’t be hunting a bird with anything less than a few thousand acres in separate patches of land. Only hunt on one patch of land per week otherwise you’ll strip it. Falconry isn’t about the amount of kills but the quality of flights and amount of time you’re out flying, giving as much liberty as possible. Get out there and do your best to give your bird the most fulfilling life as possible! Good luck!

Great video! How do you manage them during the colder months? And how cold does it get where you are? I'm getting a Male and it gets down to 0 on a regular basis and negatives for some part of winter. Just trying to figure out when to call it quits and let him hang out.
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 6 лет назад
Great thank you. Our last winter got down to -15 and regular sits at 0 to 5 degrees. Not a problem flying them as long as you never tether them on the ground (keep away from frost) as they can suffer wing tip oedema. (frost bite) Extreme cases their wing tips fall off. I always free-loft my birds - Harris' Hawks, goshawks, falcons and eagles. Bare in mind that winter flying the birds need to be muscled and at the top of their game. Good fitness, good healthy feeding regime and free-loft in aviary out of the wind. Never put your hawk away wet in the winter. I use a none teflon hair dryer on a cold setting to dry them before putting them away for the night.

George hawking Thanks for the recognition of time and hard work spent flying most days, very much appreciated. I flew a male goshawk for 8 seasons which was absolutely unbelievable! A female goshawk for a season which was also unbelievable, and a peregrine for 3 seasons. And a few hybrid falcons at crows. All the birds I’ve had the privilege to fly have been awesome to spend time with in the field. My focus at the moment is getting the best out of Harris’ Hawks from hill soaring.

@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 6 лет назад
George hawking Yes it frustrates me when I read about people treating them as beginners birds saying they can be flown a couple of days per week. Quite the opposite in my opinion. Very social bird where things can easily go wrong if you don’t provide them with adequate stimulation and flying. Simple equation... If you can’t put the time in then don’t have one.
@georgehawking9126
