If we're being honest, Alec Guinness along with the music of John Williams lent a certain level of gravitas and seriousness to a movie that otherwise could have been perceived as visually "pretty" for its time, but somewhat lacking otherwise. Those elements elevated it into a completely different, totally unoccupied genre level of cinema that science fiction to that point never had done.
He should have blamed on such prestigious theaters unable to or uninterested in making an actor remembered by performances presented to small selected audiences. Ironical, but such is this outcome in this field. And it's sad how even the most competent actors rarely get it.
Yep, you took the words out of my mouth. Mark and Harry are obviously getting on his nerves. They're getting on my nerves. I'll never be able to watch this scene again without thinking of this short.

@S R Could you point to a post or interview where Hamill expressed a similar level of dissatisfaction as Harrison? From everything I’ve read he was always legitimately happy to have been Luke and was really invested in having played him and in Star Wars in general. There’s the fact that he IS Joker and has a huge amount of VA work under his belt. While hate may be too strong a word, Harrison has never made it a secret that he has no love lost for Solo or Star Wars
@@NeoCreo1 in fact, Mark loved playing Luke, and was disappointed with how Disney portrayed his character because of how much he liked it. Mark is also not pigeon holed into Luke because he played one of the most famous Joker's of all time
@@micah9359 Indeed, when you go back and see his interviews throughout the sequels you can see his optimism melt away and in some later cases be replaced with straight up anger. There’s a few shots of him giving hardcore death glares. He’s also pretty candid that he was completely taken aback by how they portrayed Luke in 8, and in 7 was hopeful that he would have had a larger role than he ended up getting, with the writers ignoring almost all of his input in regards to Luke
The way Mark Hamill goes from laughing to being in character only a fraction of a second thereafter. A fantastic voice actor, and an underrated actor in general!
There's a difference between shooting the moments in between takes as opposed to shooting the movie, this was either Lucas or someone else shooting for themselves not for the film
He found the script stupid and silly but he actually said to Lucas this movie will make lots and lots of money. That's why part of his contract is to have small percentage of the films earnings. You must realize that Alec Guinness is well known as a Comedy actor that likes to do disguises, with films like the black comedy Kind hearts and Coronets, LadyKillers, The man in the white suite... etc. Peter Sellers idolized him and tried to imitate his brand of comedy. His drinking stories with writers like Hemingway or Noel Coward is totally hilarious.
@@JohnSmithAnythingChannel Well, you're forgetting about Peter Cushing. He was another old british actor in this particular Star Wars movie. But, I'm not sure he and Alec Guiness ever did any days of shooting together. But, unlike Alec, he really enjoyed playing his character Grand Moff Tarkin, minus the carpet slipper incident.🤣😂🤣
High, 100%. At least one of his driver's spoke out about his penchant for blazing up before going to shoot. Pretty sure Hamil is on coke in this scene too, VERY cokey behavior and facial expressions.
He was just young lol. 40-50 years brings a lot of change, you don't only change in your teens/twenties, you continue to change through your whole life. It will happen to you too.
Now I'm imagining the inside of the Death star being filled with MASSIVE rows upon rows of shelves, each one filled to the brim with normal sized supermarkets filled with their own normal sized item, you fill up your star destroyer sized cart with walmarts and costcos and targets then drag it to the checkup line with a tractor beam.

It gave me the chills. Knowing now what he would become. He is the hero of like four generations. He played Luke Skywalker in the seventies and eighties, then he was joker in the nineties, then he was Firelord ozai in the early 2000s.
from what ive seen he actually really enjoyed making the movie, its just that afterwards he hated it because he didnt like that it became all he was known for
@Haydawg06 that's fine and dandy but he himself made comments about how he hated working on the movies. He thought space fantasy was ridiculous since he was a well established trained dramatic actor
My favorite thing about New Hope is you can tell everybody on set had a blast. The trash compactor scene especially makes me so happy, you can feel the sheer joy coming off the actors in that scene. It's really wonderful
Working on this movie was actually very tough for the most time. George had mental break downs and got heart problems because of it. The crew tried to lighten him up by being as joyful as they could when in reality they were all extremely confused and were certain they're on a sinking ship. Almost nobody believed in Star Wars and thus they didn't took it seriously anymore. (ik, ik: 🤓)

@@jujoya Harrison really really HATES sequels, like notoriously Of course, New Hope is the first movie he plays Han so it's not ACTUALLY a surprise he's enjoying himself, but he's known to be really grouchy when on set of a sequel where he's playing the same character This is why he hates playing Han Solo, and repeatedly asked for him to die in EVERY FILM HE PLAYED AS HIM IN
Solo was at his best in A New Hope. I just love how he had to baby sit an Old man, a boy scout, his dog, some clueless droids, and a spoiled princess 😂
he may have thought so, as if he really was the "leading man" But that was just another of good ole Obi-wan Jedi mind tricks The only character really in charge was Obi-wan _all along. Even his old Padovan, "Vader" thought he had him finally all cornered. Little he knew... Like Luke would do to Hans' son decades later, mastering same skills, He must have been far away in a desert cave, projecting through the Force his own image to his last atom, until finally seeing the siblings reunited at last and safely escaping he too did let go off his last breath

This looked like a full dress rehearsal - why didn't he know his lines? When you're playing a role, you have to invest in it, no matter your personal feelings. Unprofessional is how he comes across to me.
@@lodragan you clearly haven’t seen what a film set is like, there’s so much pressure to get your lines right, especially when you’ve got some of George’s dialogue which like I said you can write it but it’s a pain to try and say. Even the best actors mess up there lines, it’s not unprofessional it’s just human

Ford wasn’t young, I think he was in his mid 30s. I mean compared to now he was young but he’d already bounced around Hollywood for a decade at that point.
Probably one of the happier moments in the fustercluck that was the production of A New Hope. It's still so wild to know that everyone on this project, and everyone funding it, had the lowest expectations for its box office performance.
This clip is beautiful. Nowadays people like Disney make sure to have the actors to give as many "candid" bts clips so they can hype up their fanbases a ton, but this was super genuine.

I love that Luke is this happy go lucky kid from the desert who doesn't know anything about the Galaxy and Solo is this grumpy always irritated guy who just wants to get his money and disappear. Great combo to write a story.
