Harry Belefonte has had a social consciousness ever since the 1950's. He is a towering giant compared to the Black celebrities of today, who have nothing to say, or nothing to stand for. Thank you for truly using your bully pulpit to speak for those with no voice.

There could not have been a better portrait painted on the art form known as movies. Equally there isn't a better person to paint that portrait then the legendary Harry Belafonte. Excelsior!

Thank you. Please forgive the typos. Men of color are hardly represented well in the media. That was my contribution to point out that men of color reflected in a positive can be empowering and is long overdue.

Lori Lynette when a white person gets scared, he turns yellow, when a white person blushes, he turns red, when a white person gets hit on the face, his face turns purple, when a white person dies, he turns into many colors. When a black person blushes, he is black, when a black person gets scared, he's still looks black, when a black person gets hit on the face, he's still looking black, when a black person dies, he won't turn into many colors......so who's the colored people/race ???

A powerful, inspiring, provocative, and brutally honest speech by a man who has, it is true, used his celebrity as a tool for the advancement of his activism and beliefs. If, however, one suspects or wonders about his motives or agenda, one only need look at his alignment with Eleanor Roosevelt to discern the nature and direction of his concerns and efforts. Both were completely and endlessly concerned with inequality, discrimination, and oppression and both used their position, passion, and power to advocate for those with no recourse, no voice, and no power of their own.

Growing up in Africa in the late 60s and the 70s, we played Harry Belafonte's music, and knew how special he was. He took Paul Robeson's baton, and continues to soldier on, to this very day.

1955, 15 years after my birth in the Netherlands in 1940, I started learning guitar. Harry Belafonte inspired me with his easy to listen to, happy songs. To me he was an inspiration. That was then, no TV, no computers, no mobile phones, no technology that allows every sensationalist and mudslinger to create havoc among the billion plus social media users. There were just movies, many to do with music, but it was a time of post war social institutionalization, though most people weren't aware, too busy with all the exciting new products to "make life easy". I don't go for any awards, no Logies or any other, nor for Nobel Prizes, nor for UN awards, the whole scenario is disgustingly ugly - propaganda comes in a myriad of disguises, not in the US alone, but everywhere else no less. As for Harry Belafonte, he gave millions the joy of life in his early musical career. But the one thing that happens to all great musicians and actors is that they are sucked into the political Hollywood syndrome and before long meet all those great personalities, icons and so called "leaders" and the political psychology process begins to play its game. Just like Harry Belafonte, the internet "social media" user is sucked into all those wonderful stories only to find later that people who are admired at first turned out to have a dark side or have been sucked into it. I have read most of the comments in this thread, all I can say is that people should do their homework and look into what people are made of before the system gets a hold of them. And looking into oneself wouldn't go astray either.

Both Belafonte and Poitier are class acts. The only difference is that Belafonte has been more outspoken than Poitier. They both share the same philosophy and outlook and are dear friends. Neither one is a hate-monger. They have both fought against class and racial hatred their entire lives.

As I said, I like this man. He and Sidney Portier came here from other lands and was accepted in their fields as Black pioneers. I accept their successful careers, but they jeopardize their careers by overstepping their accepted boundaries and pissing off Whites with cries of racial equality or by rallying Blacks and Whites to demand change in America. Native Black Americans would have achieved their successes without these speeches. I prefer to name people like Melvin Van Peeples, who was not accepted by White America until he had proven himself in other countries. Melvin Van Peeples did not shy away from confronting White America in his work. There were others who took the hard road to expose America's tilted mentality toward equality and social injustice. I'm just saying this to expose that Mr. Harry, you are not so special and you have not done enough in your lifetime to warrant your criticism of President of President Obama. Why don't you and your detractors give it a rest???
