Two things that Harry Caray said came true in 2016. "Sure as God made green apples, some day, the Chicago Cubs are going to be in a World Series." And, at the end of this interview, he said, "Somewhere along the line, somebody will remember me and say, 'Gee, the Cubs just won the world championship. Boy, isn't it a shame Harry's not here to see it." Growing up with him on TV and radio, I definitely thought of Harry on those occasions in 2016
I happen to have not watched a baseball game since Harry died. As a kid, I started as a Sox fan. When Harry moved to the Cubs, I became a Cubs fan. Turns out I was a Harry fan. He was hilarious.
I met Harry a couple of times, once at his restaurant and once at the ballpark. Had great seats on third base side. I see Harry coming towards me and I say "Hey Harry, how's it going?" I was talking to another guy and Harry stopped and talked to us for a bit. Guy said do you know him? I said no, but I figured he is at the bar so much he might think he does! Great memory.

I felt the same way. It stung. My dad died many years ago and my grandpa had dementia when the Cubs won the world series so neither one of those men were able to celebrate the World Series win, even though without them I never would have been a Cubs fan. Harry Caray, Ron Santo, Ernie Banks, and so many others never got to see it happen. We who got to see it are truly blessed and should never take it for granted.
You know for me growing up in STL, it was the transistor radio at a low volume under the pillow, in case my dad walked in to say goodnight. .. with my finger on the volume dial, to lower it even further when he did. Listening to Harry and Jack Buck... the greatest TEAM ever, especially when the Cards were on the west coast and the games went late, was a special memory I still carry today. Always tired the next day, but who cared? That started in 1967, at age 9. Life comes full circle. Now I fall asleep listening with my smart phone under there, the same size as the old transistor.... tuned to the Cards broadcast on the MLB app. Only my dad doesn't walk in anymore. :( Thanks Harry. Thanks Jack. What you two taught me about the greatest game ever stays with me to this day.
Thanks for the video. People forget what a long career he had and his intelligence. Going in every day and getting enthusiastic on the air is not as easy as u think. R.I.P Harry. I will see u soon and we will share a beer. Lol. And I will let u buy the first round.
I listened to every St. Louis Cardinals game in the seasons of '67 & '68. Harry Caray and Jack Buck were wonderful, never to be topped by any other broadcast team in my book. I've heard many, many others over the years.
Both Harry & Skip are legends in broadcasting as far as I'm concerned. Chip isn't bad, although he has a long way to go to match his grandfather & father. Mike Bliesener I know what you mean. I caught the very last tail end of that era in the early to mid 1980's. We'd gather a few of us for a baseball game and next thing you knew, we had other neighbors coming in wanting to take a swing at the ball. I remember it like yesterday. It still tells me....what could be someday when peoples eyes are opened to real, heartfelt fun like that. I also simutaneously was blessed enough to grow up with Haray Caray, catch Jack Buck on a screeching radio late at night in Kansas City four hours away from St. Louis, and of course growing up, listening to Denny Mathews. I feel so lucky to catch the end of one of the greatest generations ever.
Reds fan as a kid I loved watching any game, Harry Carey was a huge part of my childhood watching Cubs games on the Superstation when the Reds weren’t on tv.
great announcer, he called the game like you watch it... and thank you to the great bill veeck for all his innovations including harry's signature "take me out to the ball game."
What a wonderful man and announcer. He really understood that the average fan just wanted to be let in, and there was no announcer better at letting in the fan, all of us, in on the great game of baseball.

I actually did say when the Cubs won the world series in 2016 it would have been awesome to hear Harry caray say the Cubs won the world series. I did say now he can rest in peace.
I can remember the first time I heard Harry call a game. This was a day game of course because it was before they added lights to Wriggly. Harry must have been drinking because I could not believe how badly he was speaking. I asked my friend if he was mentally challenged it was that bad. Then he explained that’s Harry, on a hot day he’d drink a bit too much Bud and he started slurring. Later I became used to it and appreciated his history in the game.
I will never forget Harry. He's the only reason I'm still a Cub Fan. Today's Cub Team is still taking advantage of who Harry Caray was. Attendance is dropping at home games at horrendous pace. This time there's not another Harry Caray type franchise savior.
Back when all sports were fun. And little bobby costas didn't spout his politics. Half of The USA doesn't agree with little bobby. And probably more agree that, "I paid a boatload of money, I just want to watch the game." Doesn't matter which sport. Tennis, wrestling, hockey, football, the olympics, etc........

Being a resident of California and watching Cubs' games on WGN for years, back in February of 1998, while planning a trip to Chicago later in the year, I bought a ticket for a Cubs' game versus the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field (for June 30, 1998). Then Harry died two weeks later after I bought my ticket. I miss all the old-time announcers, including Harry Caray. Jack Brickhouse did the 7th inning stretch at the game I went to. Sammy Sosa would end up hitting 20 home runs in the month of June 1998, and at the game I went to, he hit the 20th home run. LIttle did I know then what made it possible for him to hit those home runs.
As a boy the highlight of every day during the baseball season was listening to Harry while I was supposed to be sleeping. I think it was my first experience with loss when he had to leave St. Louis. I thank him for the joy baseball continues to bring my life
It was the joy that brought us all back again and again. You nailed it. His banter was wonderful. WGN for me as a child was playing in the background of my house.

The Chicago Cubs did win the World Series, and could you only imagine what his call could have been like if he would have been there to seen it all happen?
I would legitimately watch Cubs games when they were getting their asses kicked just so I could listen to Harry Carey broadcast a game. I never knew when he might say something that would have me on the floor rolling, but I expected it at some point.
I would get home from school every weekday by the 4th to the 6th inning. Spark a bowl, hang out with friends listening to this man and watching the Cubbies. What a great time to be young.
If I recall, this was broadcast right after Ryno retired and when everyone knew a strike was coming. For me, it was like watching someone slowly die right before my very eyes and there was nothing I could do about it. Baseball was on life-support that year and the next 3 years. It finally died with Harry and the Brick.
The two greatest lovers of baseball, in terms of broadcasters, are on this video. Costas could've done the same as Harry, if he so chose. But he went and stayed national. I don't know if it was after this special was made, that Harry invited Bob Costas to eat at his restaurant, or another time they got together. But that evening, at like 4am, Bob asked Harry:. What's it all about Harry? Harry's response? Booze, broads, baseball and bullshit, Bob! What a life this man enjoyed.
This is when it was fun to watch the Cubs even when they were terrible. Len Kasper is the most boring, mundane announcer ever. I miss Harry's excitement. Kasper is unbearable to listen to! I wish they would fire him, and replace him with someone who actually cares if the Cubs win and is not there just to collect a paycheck.
We won't see or hear a Man, yes, a Real Man, like this in sports broadcasting ever again. I'm not a baseball fan, since the 80's. Way too corporate and safe now. No Thank you.
I grew up a Cardinal fan with Harry. IMO he was the best ever. He bled red, made the games fun and you learned baseball from him. It broke my heart when he left St. Louis.
Loved Harry! Big part of my life as a kid and a baseball fan...sure miss those days..so carefree compared to nowadays. Holly Cow where did the years go?
I watched this a few times, just love it. Two of my favorite baseball people of all time. As a kid in Iowa in the ‘60s I tolerated very scratchy radio to hear Harry from St Louis, then moved to western Michigan in 1977 and was a regular with Harry at Comiskey for the next few years. Deeply loved him from the ‘60s to the end of his career. I only paid attention to the Cubs later because of him. Thanks Bob for your usual perfect interviews.
