@@alexanderleeart They are completely different genres of music, though. "Blue Light, Red Light" had a big band ensemble backing him, and "She" had a funk band backing him. "Blue Light, Red Light" got me into Harry Connick, Jr, and I still listen to it on the regular, but I also have "She" in the rotation just as much. I love them both and would never be able to put on above the other. I've also seen Harry Connick, Jr multiple times over the years performing with his big band, quartet, and even a full-blown orchestra, but my favorite concert of his that I've ever been to was when he was touring with his funk band in support of "She" and "Star Turtle" back in the mid-90's. They were just mind-blowingly awesome, and Harry was able to do a lot more spontaneous and improvised music with that type of band. It's a shame he has never wanted to revisit that era of his music. I'd pay so much money to be able to see him with that funk band again!
This is EXTREMELY basic stuff. Pentatonics is level 1 knows knowledge. But you’ve been led to believe it’s all about message and simple melody. Not about music.
“You know too damn much”. The usage of the notes on the musical scale seems pretty much musician 101 doesn’t it? The fact that she doesn’t know and doesn’t care is rather damning.
It's really a shame that JLo is so defensively, aggressively, and proudly ignorant. Harry Connick, Jr. is a real artist and a real musician. JLo could learn a thing or two.
Gotta love how every time Harry starts calmly explaining something that everyone else could use listening to, he gets immediately interrupted. I've been in that place so many times.
Narcissists will ALWAYS interrupt, mock, cajole, or otherwise brush off deep understanding and thorough intelligence about ANY subject. And why? SIMPLE. I mean, just listen to her. SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND. And there is a lesson taught in the first book of my series--by the villain, no less: "Never interrupt what you do not understand. EVER." --Nitrozite Jennifer Lopez could learn by listening to BOTH Harry Connick Jr. *and* Nitrozite. 💪😎✌️ One is a Ghost Dragon, though. Slightly more intimidating, but both are more intelligent. 😂 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
We posted this video because Harry Connick, Jr. has the same ideal as us in wanting to "smarten up" the performance of popular American music. Glad most of you agree!
He's the only credible judge that any of these "music" shows has ever had. TV should enrich culture. But these singing shows take one of the most difficult disciplines out there and says, "you don't have to know anything about it, to do it." It's embarrassing, and insulting to the musicians who struggle to find work in America, or leave the country to find work. It's like saying, "you don't have to go to law school, to be a lawyer....you can just come off the street and do it." For musicians, this show is incredibly stupid and frustrating. I think that the majority of the population represents J.Lo's attitude. You know nothing about music, but can't accept the fact that you know nothing about it. :) Harry is way more tactful than I would be....almost all of these contestants shouldn't be anywhere near a stage....and these "judges" know next to nothing, and have no business judging singers. I could literally record myself and just play it back for every contestant: "it sounds terrible. go to school, study voice, learn your theory, take lessons, learn how to practice, PRACTICE, then come back in about 10 years. :) People need to stop calling this industry "music." It's NOT music. It's entertainment.
Thank you, Harry, for knowing that there's more to being a good musician/vocalist than just tricks and frivolous ornamentation and not being afraid to get in people's faces about it. Your depth is like an olympic swimming pool to J.Lo's kiddie pool.
musicmaestrodj Funny story. A band I was in opened for Keith back when he first broke in the scene. I have a pic of our little trailer next to his huge bus.
@@connorcampbell5551 How many are coming to Urban shows vs. Connick? Stating obvious, but it’s about the song, always will be. Urban has songs more people want to hear. Connick is a technician. Great. That’s his thing apparently. Still I’m on board with riffing. Empty riffs are just that.
Jlo doesnt let him talk because she feels intimidated by his knowledge, but its weird how aggressive she gets about it. Why is this causing her anxiety, its the most simple concept in music
This reminds me of a liberal and a conservative debating. The conservative (connick) points out a fact and the liberal (lopez) can only respond emotionally.
The problem here is Harry Connick jr, being a real musician, thought he was on this show to judge musicianship instead of whatever it is they do there.
How dare you highlight the fact that Harry IS a virtuoso!!!! AND JLO is just a lucky dancer that can sing in tune 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Harry is a MAESTRO and as a musician myself (classical vocalist) I have the UTMOST respect for his indubitable MUSICIANSHIP!!!!!
The best bit of that clip is the drummer behind him in pain because it's all he can hear so, when Connick drops in the extra beat, and moves everyone's clapping, he punches the air in celebration. 🤣
How would it be anything but? After they gave UTTERLY INTOXICATED American youth to think it’s about Lyrics and Message and Simple Melodies and NOTHING to do with music.
They did that for the TV. AI is still a tv SHOW. That's their bit they were doing there..trying to emulate what Simon & Paula used to do on the show... Just chill everyone..they were only tryinna make the show more engaging. 🤷♂️
What people don't know is that Harry is a prodigy. He was taught by the jazz greats at a young age. He understands the science and theory of music. So when you have a Jlo who "sings" into a computer to enhance her vocals or a Keith urban who is also manufactured you're going to have a gap in understanding what music really is. Harry is looking for real talent and not someone who can be manufactured cuz as we see real singers have more longevity.
NickBlevinsGuitar His explanation was actually perfect and 100% correct. He said there are 12 chromatic notes, and that the pentatonic scale is FIVE of those twelve notes. And that they are the five most consonant and melodious notes from the chromatic scale. 99% of the vocal runs you hear from Christina Aguilera to Aretha Franklin are based on that scale.
Robert Langslet Any student of music uses the term Chromatic pitches as notes outside of the home key area, so any tonal music will have 7 pitches in the scale it's based off and 5 chromatic pitches. But why even mention chromatic pitches if the scale he's trying to explain doesn't contain any? That doesn't make any sense. And I wasn't arguing that singers don't use pentatonic scales in their vocal runs. I was just stating everyone claiming this guy knows his shit when he clearly is just tossing around vague concepts he doesn't have a clear understanding of. (Major Pentatonic scale= Do Re Mi So La Do)
NickBlevinsGuitar Are you seriously suggesting that one of the most famous and skilled jazz musicians of our time doesn't know what he's talking about when describing a pentatonic scale? A man who arranges music for his band? Who has been reading music since childhood? He mentioned the 12 notes of western music because Jlo seemed confused and he wanted to start from the basics. He went on to say that a pentatonic scale is the 5 most sonorous notes out of the 12, and the most common notes used in fast scalar motion by singers and jazz musicians. Is that wrong? Do you know something he doesn't?
Harry: Let me teach you and the contestant something about music. JLo: I'm offended so I'm gonna cut you off, ignore your advice and prevent the contestant from gaining important knowledge by giving them a free ride in spite of you 🤗
Connick is right on. Sing a melody convincingly. I learned that from my mom. In church she tended to distrust melismatic bullshit because she felt the singers were more concerned about "showboating" than worship.
It explains why I want to hear him sing and not any of the others. Because he can sing. Just belting or guiding or riffing through a song is absolutely irritating and meaningless junk. It isn't singing a song.
This is what happens when you have a real musician doing a real musician's job as opposed to judges who have no reason to be judges because they do not know the craft!
Yeah, what the hell did they hire a musician for. And unfortunately Connick didn't teach anybody anything because they just don't care. They can't get past the image.
She can't even sing! Or act! Dance...maybe yeah. All she is famous for is her ass. Personally, I don't think she's that pretty... InThe face... It's all just ass.
Pop music is a craft? Nice joke bro if i could make a statistical approaximation of beats which would make sense to the mind of an average person i would get pop.
@@sriyansh1729 Of course it's a craft. It's not a particularly inspiring one but it's not a cakewalk, it takes quite a bit of know-how on the musicians' end. Plenty of pop songs are and were quite good too, though there are many bland and uninspired ones.
+Jonathan Bengco To love the language (music), you got to be born on the banks of the Mississippi. Stayin by my mama's in slippers an pajamas where there's always something good to eat... Bettin strawberries, honey and cherries, and pecan pies oh so sweet! With a dew rag on my brow... Jasmine, wisteria and Fleur-de-lis... To love the language (music) you got to be born on the banks of the Mississippi!!!
*****=) I feel you brother... I wasn't born there, but I have family roots there and I think it really is something that gets in your soul. I can't explain it.
***** I kinda wondered if anyone would notice if my first comment was actually lyrics from one of Harry's songs, but I kind of doubt anyone will, which is sad, because SHE is my favorite album of all time. I LOVE that soo much.
***** I agree! He is an amazing artist... and an amazing man... After Katrina, didn't he start a musician's village or something like that? Brilliant. He is a really awesome guy... Love him!!! =) And it's really cool to talk to someone who appreciates him, by the way!!!
Finally someone who knows music theory on a vocal talent show. This is why educated singers and musicians outlast those just "born with the 'X-factor'" Not to say the latter aren't talented... but they lack sustainability because they just don't understand that music is a written language, not just something you hear and mimic.
Thank you for sharing this video. I only hope its gets more likes and shares. As a professional musician with degrees in vocal performance, I haven't been able to watch this show since the third season or so, because of the lack of education the "judges" have. Harry is an excellent addition to the panel, because he brings an informed and accurate judgement of what is going on with these so called "singers". Hopefully we won't hear "you were 'pitchy' dog", ever again. These judges shape the American public's idea of what singing "should" be, especially for the very young musicians out there. They need this type of commentary, so they will experience real musical terminology and criticism. Thank you so very much!
The pentatonic is literally the first thing musicians learn about when studying theory (or even just an instrument)… and here we have a “world class” pop singer who has been deemed fit to judge other people, not having a single clue as to what it is. This frustrates me
This. I started learning to play piano a year ago and I learned about the pentatonic scale in the first week. Fucking hell the standards have never been lower smh
His comments are the only ones that encourage improvement. Anyone who's ever been through competitive music circuits has heard critiques like these from judges and although it sucks to hear, it lets musicians know what to improve upon.
It's great to have a knowlegable judge on the show. It's weird how defensive Lopez gets--she basically says "I'm ignorant and I want to stay that way!"
As an educated musician, I LOVE having Harry on the panel because of the objectivity he brings with his critiques. Everything I've heard him say thus far is dead on. But I can't help feeling he'll always be fighting a losing battle because the VAST majority of people have no idea what he's talking about nor do they care. But that's like anything....it's no different from comparing a chef with sensitive tastebuds with that of a 10 year old child who basically eats anything.
Ya'll make these WEAK singers who couldn't CREATE a song for the life of them by buying and listening to them. They couldn't play an instrument or do the the audio engineering well another in a LIFETIME, which is where the magic happens. Producers can make ANYONE sound good with the right "plugins" which most people don't have any ideas what I'm talking about. They do know autotune but there's sooooooooo much more effect a vocal take ie compression, eq, saturation, exciters, etc. So ANYONE with the right look can be made to sound good. Though I want REAL music by someone who's DEDICATED to their craft
Harry speaks total sense and if they listen to him, these people may become much better singers. What's more, individual singers and not just another ' Licks' clone. Bless you Harry!!!
Though I don't mind JLo or Keith at all, I love that Harry is a judge on here!! It's about time they brought in someone who actually has a clue about what music really is!! Pitchy --- not a word, it just means you can't sing in tune! haha.. Want to see a show with judges worthy of being on a singing show? Check out "The Sing-Off" Judges all have backgrounds in music, ie. can read sheet music, understand what they're talking about, know basic terminology like dynamics, dissonance, meter, timbre.. etc...
What Harry is saying is: Don't try to be flashy without learning the basics. Sing the song as it was written and don't try to over do the delivery. What is the song about and what emotions is it trying to convey instead of look how great I am.
@@ArnaudFTW McDonalds makes more money than any other restaurant chain and it's not even close, does that mean you'd rather eat there than have a steak dinner?
Funny, because Pentatonics are Scales Simplified. They're the most basic form of melodies. Granted, they're one of the most used forms. But, it's not like he was lecturing her on Diminished Scales, Polychords or Superlocrian.
@@mysa.relind977 I don’t think he was showing off. There’s an extent to which the runs are there to hide when a voice isn’t that special. And, if you’re going to hang your audition on runs, make them good ones. It’s not that pentatonic can’t be good - there’s a ton of pentatonic playing on the Allman Bros. Album Bothers and Sisters, particularly on Jessica - but it can be boring if you don’t really get what to do with it. And this singer didn’t.
Obviously, many so-called "singers" don't have any basic training in music. Pentatonic scale is one of the most basic scale taught in elementary music theory classes. I taught myself different scales from the internet without taking any formal music classes. It doesn't take a genius to learn it. So, please do some learning before you become a "judge" for American Idol.
Shane Dial nah he’s really not explaining anything too technical or crazy, pentatonics are first year music theory. J-Lo just thinks that because she never bothered to actually learn anything.
@@DontLetTheOldManIn you’ve got to listen to his music. He’s not at all lacking in feel or swing or emotion. Don’t get me wrong. Love Jennifer Lopez, who wouldn’t? (Alex Rodriguez, there’s something deeply wrong with you)
It's so great to see an actual magician teach J-Lo about how to be a musician. This video should be shown in every recording studio before someone starts singing.
Jennifer doesn't seem to like listening to other people teaching her something especially if it is a subject that she knows nothing about. Jennifer also interrupts and she doesn't seem to have much patience, maybe this is why she has been married and divorced three times, lol.
Penta what now? someone just hands me some papers with words on them, and tell me to listen to the track and then sings those words to that track.... Anybody who has any interest in music should know about pentatonic scales, as well as other scales like major and minor; first things I learned in guitar lessons.
Thank you, Harry Connick, Jr. for finally bringing credibility to this show. The last person to do so, Kara DioGuardi, was ousted so quickly. I hope he stays a little while longer than she did.
Ever see that video where the audience was clapping to the 1 and 3 beat and he added an extra beat while performing and the audience didn’t know it? He ended up getting them to clap on the 2 and 4 beat like everyone is supposed to. Guy is a genius.
Connick has a point. But at the end of the day, the audience for that show isn't looking for someone who knows pentatonics. They're looking for the next pole dancer who can sing a little
