I'm reading Harry Harrison's story "The Day After the End of the World" to the music Gustavo Santaolalla - The Last of Us OST (official soundtrack of the game) in the style of the MDS radio show (Model for assembly).
Harry Harrison's short story "The Day After the End of the World" raises a number of philosophical and moral questions related to human survival, responsibility for one's actions, and the possibility of redemption.
The philosophical aspect of the work is to consider the consequences of global disasters and the possibility of restoring civilization. The author asks the question of how quickly humanity will be able to recover from the disaster, and what lessons it will learn from what happened. The question is also raised about how people’s worldviews will change after the end of the world.
The moral aspect of the story is related to the theme of responsibility for one's actions. On the one hand, the alien who destroyed the Earth has done it out of fear. He saw the actions of humans who, in his opinion, have been unfair and cruel to other life forms on their planet. And he fears that people might do the same to his alien race if they get their hands on them. But on the other hand, the alien actually condemned humanity for what they have not yet done. This moment emphasizes the importance of respect for all living things and the need to take responsibility for your actions.
There is also a motif of redemption in the story. The alien, having destroyed the Earth, realizes his mistake and tries to correct it and ask for forgiveness from the survivors. This symbolizes the possibility of redemption even after committing terrible acts.
At the end of the story, the question of learning important life lessons is also raised. The author played this moment in a humorous way - the survivors did not understand anything, and several times radically changed their point of view on what happened. :)
As in the case of the story “Contact Man” by the same author, which gained great popularity on my channel, I want to end my accompanying summary with the same words:
"Perhaps everyone will see something different in this story. Although, the main message seems to be obvious."
Despite the fact that the story is written with a fair amount of irony and humor, it has very interesting topical messages.
