Tony deserved a nicer ending though, he was killed without being able to say goodbye to his daughter face to face. I wish both of them could've retired, they worked their asses off to save the universe
Memories of my heavenly-resplendent wife, my eternal love, my Barbra Rose sent me here. Barb and I had only 2 years together in this life before cancer stole her away from me. Barb - I miss you beyond mere words. Barb - I love you beyond Time. You'll be back for me soon enough, my adorable forever baby-love. I'll be waiting for you.
Arguably the greatest trumpet player of all time. Mr. Harry James. Harry James also recorded thus with Kitty Kallen on the vocals. I think Helen Forrest's vocal version tops Kitty Kallens. Both great! Thank you for the post and for introducing a new generation to these great classics!!
My Mom grew up in this era and would always sing these great old songs in the kitchen when I was a kid. That's how I got to know all of them. She was a really good singer, too! These era songs always remind me of a much saner, happier time.
This song was released in mid 1945 with Kitty Kallen as the vocalist (That version is the one in Endgame). The war in Europe is over, the war in the Pacific is close to finishing. There are 11 MILLION service members getting ready to come home. The wives and girlfriends are anxious to see them again after, in some cases, being gone for a couple years or more. The men in the Army, Navy, Marines and Army Air Corps are anxious to see their "girl back home". Any wonder this hits #1 on Billboard? Both this version and the Bing Crosby version hit #1 sequentially. Women hear this song from a female vocalist and think of their men coming home. Men hear the Bing version with a male vocalist and think of their wife or girlfriend left behind. Lot's of meaning for everyone at that time for this song. Which is what makes it so appropriate for Steve Rodgers in the movie.
I am 71 and learned to read music and play trumpet, coronet and baritone since age 8. I have always loved to hear the sweet sounding horn of Harry James. He could play vibrato like no one else. What a great sound ...and yes, even today ! db
Thanks Marvel for introducing such a good music and a marvelous decade of movies. 30s-50s music always strike me hard, especially with Endgame's ending.
Congrats, you are the first comment to reference Endgame as of June 4, 2019. All Endgame comments made between the film's release and now that were deleted will not be counted. Have a cookie.
RJSiGAMING TV nah he diverged the timeline. The plane never crashed and he went back home to Peggy after the War. Falcon even tells Steve it’s sad to see a world without Captain America before he got the shield.
This was my father's favorite song. Harry James sounds good on his trumpet. Glad to hear people getting introduced to big band music. But i am glad that i was one of the few who knew of the song before watching it on a movie.
I'll say it again - and I'll tell you true - I wouldn't be 'me' without the 20s, 30s and 40s music. In particular, 'me' wouldn't exist without this recording. Lang lebe Harry James. Lang lebe Helen Forrest. Lang lebe Aristaeus1 !
Helen always at her best in all her recordings with Harry James and previously a few other bands. That voice and phrasing always to perfection......and such a smooth large octave range.
Bucky was the only one who told Cap he would miss him. That’s because Bucky was the only one that knew Steve was staying in the past to have a life with Peggy.
For the past 3 years I have been dealing with depression and have lost sense of emotion, I thought I couldn't feel anything anymore, but after Endgame all the emotions came flooding back to me and I just started crying. The tears were both happy and tragic, but it was just nice to see that they were back. The fact that Cap' got the ending he deserved restored my hope that the world can be a good place. We salute you Captain Steve Rogers, you have served as the most dutiful protector of good the universe could have asked for, and I'm happy you got that dance.
Hey Tani billy.. without your presence, life is pretty boring ! I don't feel sad or angry or happy.. I don't feel anything! there is huge hole in my heart but I like to pretend everything is alright! when the numbness kicks in, I listen to this song and like to imagine .. there is a world where we are together.. there is no sadness, numbness, death, right or wrong.. just you and me! God bless your soul ! love you 💓
Great post WWII song. Big, bright and brassy like America at the time. My, how we have grown - for the better or worse. Love Helen Forest. Harry and his sappy horn, well, many like it, but not my cup of tea.
My grandkids -Pops why you and grandma allways dance to this song in your anniversary? Aren't you gonna tell me? Me in my 70s -No. I don't think I will
