The Harmonic Cannon is my favorite Harry Partch instrument. It has an elegant game-like quality where bridges are moved around into various positions, overlapping and blocking each other and scales are played that go up and down simultaneously. Though the Diamond Marimba is a real beauty. I discovered him in the 1970s through the percussive music of John Cage snd Stomu Yamashta and the art of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. This was all part of transformational modernism at a time when there was still an old-fashioned sort of hope. Before the Unabomber came along and threatened us with our own future. And before Reagan and Thatcher personified the worst that was to come. But I digress. Harry Partch was the eccentric uncle everyone wished they'd had, who could make a paper bag sound like a whole rhythm section.
