Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) third year at Hogwarts starts off badly when he learns deranged killer Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison and is bent on murdering the teenage wizard. Alfonso Cuaron is an outstanding director and a true artist. That being said, I still do have some problems with the film like Dumbledore being out of character and hitting Ron’s broken leg or Harry literally using a lumos spell outside of school. Also the way they did the Time Turner scene I thought it was even better than how it was in the books which was a rare sighting. If only they include the Marauders’s backstory then it would be favorite.

Once you are an adult, you can use magic outside of school. Only minors are forbidden. Sirius Black sent Harry the Firebolt. The feather was from Buckbeak. Great reaction!

The Marauders Map was actually created by the four friends: James is Prongs, Lupin is Moony (because of him being a werewolf), Sirius is Padfoot, and Wormtail is Peter. The novel goes into how they figured out that Lupin was a werewolf and how the other three became Animagus: James a stag, Sirius a dog, and Peter a rat. The Shrieking Shack was actually built by Dumbledore for Lupin so he wouldn't hurt anyone and encouraged the villagers to keep the haunted feeling. The Whomping Willow was also planted to keep people from getting hurt by Lupin when he transformed.

The director of this film, Alfonso Cuaron had the three main actors; Daniel, Rupert and Emma to write their essays on their characters because he truly wanted to dive into each one of their characters throughout the film. Though Rupert didn’t do it, he bases his entire direction on Daniel and Emma on these essays so that they would be on the same page and make sure they dig deep and explore their characters and what drove them. This is what you want to see from directors, they put true thought and imagination into each and every scene and go beyond.

A bit of backstory on the Marauders, it was a group of friends consisting of Harrry’s dad; James, Lupin, Sirius and Peter. The 4 were like the schools delinquent whom Snape resented, but the 4 were still close friends with each other. To keep Lupin company when he becomes a wolf, the other 3 would turn into animals, one time James saved Snape from being attacked by Lupin. The 4 were also occasional bullies but overtime mature and became less arrogant. Lily, Harry’s mom who initially hated James saw how much he matured and put effort into being a good student and the two got together in their last year at school.

@@dahamkahawearachchi5476 Again, James matured over time, Lily hated them at the start, it’s only when James got his act together that she started to like him. James stopped being an asshole because Lily’s opinion mattered to him. Snape on the other hand started hanging out with others who were into shady stuff and eventually become Death Eaters. Lily tried to warn him but he didn’t listen and grew apart little by little. Snape even called Lily a Mubblood, despite defending him from James, thus ending their friendship, which he of course regretted.

The giant feather that came with the broomstick at the end was from Buckbeak, the hippogriff that Sirius rode away on. From there you can probably guess who the broom was from.

And also because Sirius was also known as the Dog Star, in the Canis Major (practically Latin for "Big Dog") constellation. Just like how Remus Lupin is a werewolf, with Remus being related to wolves via the story of Romulus and Remus, and Lupin being a shortening of lupine (meaning a wolf-like creature). JKR always created meaningful names that way.

The potion Snape references as Lupin transforms is a Wolfsbane potion. Essentially what it does is allow him to transform with his mind intact. But because he didn't take it this time, he has no idea who any of them are.

The main purpose of a Patronus Charm is to create a shield of light in the form of an animal. Your character/trait decides what animal you'll create. Harry's and his father's is a Stag. That's why he thought it was his father who saved him because both of them have the same animal

@@officialflikz true, but James' patronus was a stag, as Lily's was a doe. That's part of why they matched so well. A patronus can also change over time, when something happens that fundamentally changes someone's life. This happened to Snape and to Tonks, to name a few.

Something that was brought up in the books but never mentioned in the movies: Voldemort had at one point, applied to Hogwarts as a teacher for the Defense Against the Dark Arts. Dumbledore, however, was suspicious, and rejected him. So Voldemort cursed the position, which resulted in the school not being able to hold on to a teacher in that role for longer than a year.

Honestly, I love the casting of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black and David Thewlis as Remus Lupin. They both did a damn good job portraying those characters. Watching them play Heroes after watching them play villains is pretty amazing. On another note, while Michael Gambon was a good replacement as Professor Dumbledore (save for one thing in Goblet Of Fire, no spoilers), Richard Harris will always be my preferred actor for the character. He just embodied everything I envisioned Professor Dumbledore to be when I read the books as a kid.

33:15 The potion Sirius meant was one that was made comparatively recently in their world (ie after he graduated from Hogwarts) that doesn't stop the transformation but gives the werewolf in question the ability to keep their mind even after they transform rather than their mind and instincts transforming along with their body so they won't attack anyone, makes them safe.

Great reaction! Fun Fact: if you were wondering why the boggart was shifting so fast, it’s because there was multiple people in the room. Therefore it’s hard to focus on one person’s fear; it’s the reason you always have one person at least when you confront a boggart. Also when James and Lily went into hiding, they enchantments placed around their house to prevent Voldemort or his followers from entering. They selected a Secret Keeper, a witch or wizard designated to hide a secret by means of the Fidelius Charm. The secret was embedded in their very soul. Once a Secret Keeper was selected, the person who told them the secret would find themselves unable to pass the information on again, as the Secret Keeper was the only one capable of revealing the secret, whether orally or written. The Secret Keeper could tell as many people as they liked, but they must do so voluntarily. The secret couldn't be blackmailed, bewitched, or tortured out of them. They wanted to select Sirius, but he felt it would’ve been to easy for Voldemort. So they selected Peter Petigrew, unaware that he’d deflected. When he gave them up, he sealed their death. As for how Sirius escaped, while in Azkaban he saw the picture of Ron’s family in Egypt and spotted Peter Petigrew. He then transformed into his animagus form and escaped, since the Dementors were unable to recognize him in this form. 🧔🏻‍♀️🧑🏻🪄🦌👻

@@sosaboi1352 the minister of magic went to visit him at the end of the summer and was shocked to see he was still behaving very normally. This was because Sirius would turn into his animangus when the toll of the constant draining would be too much. Dementors are blind, so they never realised he was more animal like than the other prisoners. Anyways, when fudge went to visit him, Sirius asked for the newspaper he had with him because "he was bored". That's when he saw the picture. Fudge explained all this in the three broomsticks in the book.

25:39 She actually does have the sight it turns out, or at least the ability to make predictions, but the problem is when it does happen she goes into a sort of trance and so never remembers it actually happening (we find out from one other accurate prediction she is known to have made that she remembered feeling strange on a certain day but put it down to not having eaten much), so the rest of the time she just makes stuff up.

It’s not my #1 favourite HP film, but it is technically THE BEST HP FILM! Everything was brilliant! There was a noticeable pattern going on in this film, an example of this was the scenes with Harry and Lupin, when Harry was talking to Lupin on the wooden bridge about his parents, he was looking outwards whilst Lupin was looking at him. Then Lupin did the same when he spoke to Harry about Lily & James. Then, the same pattern continued in the scene where Lupin taught Harry Expecto Patronum. I mean, all I can say is is that this film is PERFECT, down to every last detail. CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Just another note, dumbledore hates dementors and was so angry that the ministry forced the dementors to be at the school with kids and when they attacked Harry he was pissed, it wasn’t up to him at all which I wish the movie would make that clear because it seems like he was fine with them being there

If you notice during the lesson with the Bogart when Lupin goes in front of Harry, the Bogart changes to a full moon, because that's what he fears because of him being a werewolf. On a side note, Lupin is actually Latin for Wolf.

This is my favourite HP movie. My favourite scenes in this movie are when Hermoine punches Draco in the face, Harry under the invisibility clock getting back at Draco and his goons and Harry casting Expecto Patronum during the time travel scene. Although there are quire a lot of good things about this movie, there are some things that are left out or not explained as much. One of which is about the Marauders (James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew) which was briefly touched on but it is more fleshed out in the books.

Can't describe the insane amount of times I watched this growing up with my cousins, we even quoted it nonstop and there's the pc game too. It's directed by Alfonso Cuaron who helped usher in a darker tone for this franchise going forward. Professor Lupin is the BEST defense against the dark arts teacher, plus bringing in Gary Oldman as Sirius Black was a great touch! The scene where Harry casts the Patronus against the dementors in the end remains as one of his most powerful moments in the franchise. I remember shipping him and Hermione in this movie as they both teamed up in the climax. Also isn't the Marauder's Map so cool?

16:23 it still makes sense to close the castle because they were later discussing how they haven’t found sirius anywhere where they looked, they probably locked the castle to search the castle. It was useless though, as Sirius (and the other marauders) knew about secret passage to honeydukes, thinking of this, I wonder what have lupin done, if anything as he was the only professor that knew the passage and also knew that Sirius knew the passage.

While I love all the movies as movies, 3-4-6 are the WORST as adaptations. 1-2 are nearly perfect, 5 is astonishingly accurate considering it's a massive book and they had to cut loads of stuff out, they got everything important in there. 7-8 are as close as you could get... shame they cut the Dumbledore backstory but the plot made sense without it. I think overall David Yates did the best job considering the massive size of the books he was adapting, he managed to stay pretty close to the source material even while having to cut out huge parts of the story. 3 is a smaller book and could definitely have been more accurate.

Cuaron did right leaving Harry Potter after the 3rd movie. Usually when you see a small budget director going from small budget to big budget, he usually wants to stay in the big budget territory, sometimes making sequels or similar movies. Cuaron avoided that, and instead used his experience on big budget movies to explore other genres and try different things. I love a director that explores different genres. Is usually what leads to a lasting career.

Another note from me. In the book, Prof. Snape "accidentally" told a student that Remus Lupin is a werewolf. That student (presumably Malfoy) talk to others and in the end, a lot of angry parents demanding Remus to be sacked.

fun facts The Prisoner of Azkaban is the only book and movie Voldemort doesn't show up. There is a Harry Potter theory on why the dementors are actually attracted but I'll save it for final movie so you'll understand. Sirius was the one who gave Harry permission to visit Hogmeade. Sirius also gave Ron an owl named Pigwideon as a gift because Ron might be sad after learning the truth. Dementors can't sense your presence when you're a animagus, that's how Sirius escaped. Sirius was not apart of Voldemort's servants but his whole family have joined Voldemort because they believe in Pureblood Supreme and Muggle-borns as low ranks and when a member of the black family does something against their beliefs that member gets burned from the tree, basically abandoning the member. Sirius got himself burned from the family tree after he ran away and went to the Potters.

David Thewlis and Gary Oldman were the perfect actors to play Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, in both the character descriptions from the books and how they got along with the young cast. Gray Oldman and Daniel Radcliffe became close friends during the filming and their scenes together are really wonderful, even in the later movies. I would highly recommend you read the Harry Potter books as well. Obviously there is much more world building than the films, but you learn so much more and brings more clarity in future plot lines I dare not spoil.

This one is my favorite movie! I love the Marauders, and this movie has some of the best shots in the entire franchise. Alfonso Cuarón did an amazing job. Another detail left out: Both the whomping willow and the shrieking shack were established for Remus when he was a student, so he could transform somewhere he wouldn't attack someone, as well as have something to fight back at.

Up until the release of _Deathly Hollows Part 2_ Prisoner of Askaban is Without a doubt my all-time favorite Harry Potter film, from the score the acting performances especially from Daniel Radcliffe, David Thewlis and Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, the direction of the incredible of Alfonso Cuarón who took over from Chris Columbus, and the film being the transition of the Light hearted family friendly tone of the first two films to the more dramatic serios and Young adult tone of the later films/books after the third installment. Lastly, Professor Lupin is Without a doubt my favorite Dark Arts Professor and how he inteoduced Harry the Patrobus Charm to Ward of the Dementors who were easily the most terrifying being in film, and I love the scene with Harry interacting with Buckbeak the Hippogriff and the flight he had with him was incredible and Magical.

38:34 Fun fact: When Disney was working on _Aladdin_ , at one point Jafar was supposed to travel back in time to before Aladdin was born, or at least before he became a prince, but that idea was scrapped for being "too sci-fi". So it's funny to think that a mere 7 years later (the book came out in 1999), J.K. Rowling would incorporate time travel in her fantasy story, thus paving the way for other fantasy stories to use time travel, such as _Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children_ , and even Disney's own _Cinderella III: A Twist In Time_ .

There's a problem in the movies from this one onwards: 1)This is where the movies began to divert from the books in a way. They left out the Marauders back story. 2)Ron's character degrading was more glaring from here. Case in point:In the books, Ron defends Hermione when Snape calls her a know-it-all and insults her,while in the movies he ends up agreeing with Snape. Even his iconic line "If you want to kill Harry....." from the books is given to Hermione in the movies. 3)The Quidditch matches were also removed from the movies mostly,except the one where Harry was attacked by Dementors. 4)In the movies,Harry gets the Firebolt at the end of the movie,while in the book he gets it around Christmas (which in turn leads to his fallout with Hermione). I feel like that directors only did that to avoid any fallout between Harry and Hermione, since they were clear Harmony shippers.

5:14, it’s like getting a learner’s permit to drive a car. When you have one you’re supposed to have an experienced driver in the passenger seat navigating for you but once you get a license then you can drive on your own. Once he graduates he’ll be allowed to use magic without adult oversight

One thing I didn’t understand about this movie was when Harry Potter was casting Lumos in his room while he was reading his book under his covers at the beginning, why didn’t the Ministry go after him for casting spells outside of school grounds for being underage.

I thought he was practicing his school work in that scene. It’s just like how some students get workbook outlet for summer break so that when they come back to school they’ll be questioned about their homework and what they learned in the holidays instead of just wandering around, at least this is what happens in some schools from where I come from. Not to mention Harry was learning magic in that scene but not casting spells on someone. I could be wrong though in my interpretation.

This book and movie was and still is my ABSOLUTE favorite!!! I LOVE getting to meet some of Harry's Dad, James, closest friends from their school days!! I think they did great with casting David Thewlis and Gary Oldman as two of my favorite characters (other than Luna Lovegood, who you'll meet in some of the later movies), in the entire Harry Potter universe!! I always thought that the thing with them all being Animagus's so Remus wouldn't have to be alone on full moons as a werewolf was always soo sweet. James (Harry Potter's Dad) was a stag animus, Sirus Black was a dog, and Peter Pettigrew was a rat. I also loved the fact that Dumbledore made that secret passageway under the Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack so Remus had a safe space to turn every full moon. As well as the fact that Harry's Dad and his friends were the ones who made that map in this movie that shows where people are all the time.

Adult Wizards and Witches are fine to use magic in the muggle world since they already master the spell use.

This is when the Harry Potter series started to take a more dark mature turn. Also, fun fact, because it was never mentioned in the movie: The creators of the Marauders Map were James Potter (Harry's father), Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Peter Petigrew. James, Sirius, and Petigrew were good friends of Lupin and when he started turning into a werewolf, the other three became unlicensed Animagi (a witch/wizard that can turn into an animal) in order to give company to Lupin whenever he was wolfing out. James could turn into a stag/buck, Sirius a shaggy dog, and Petigrew a rat. They made the Marauders Map so they could sneak in and out of the school to help Lupin out whenever he was having his episodes. For the title of the map, they went with their nicknames: Moony = Lupin due to him being a werewolf, Wormtail = Petigrew due to him turning into a rat, Padfoot = Sirius due to him turning into a dog, and Prongs = James because he turned into a stag/buck. For the "not allowed to do magic outside of school". That's more of an age deal as well not being supposed to do magic around muggles (non-magic people). They sorta of treat magic like getting your driver's license in a way where you cannot get your license until a certain age. In the wizarding world, you're not allow to freely use magic outside of school until you're "of age". And even then, you're still not allow to use magic where muggles can see because the wizarding world is supposed to be kept secret form the muggle world. I think the only exceptions to this rule is when doing homework, like we saw Harry practicing during the intro, or in extreme/life-or-death situations.
