I grew up with Harry Potter as many people did, as did many people. I also played many Harry Potter games, so many in fact that I thought that it might be interesting to take a look at the history of Harry Potter games... at least the mainline games. As it turns out, as I was playing through the series, i noticed a pattern of the series becoming gradually worse and worse. So let's take a somewhat comprehensive look at the entire history of Harry Potter games. And take a look at why Harry Potter Games Used To Be Great... Until They Weren't.

I grew up playing the original 3 HP games (philosophers stone and Chamber of Secrets on PC and Prisoner of Azkaban on PS2) Hogwarts Legacy feels like I'm dreaming. And also why: -You see Peeves -The Bloody Baron is mentioned -The potion's riddle under the trapdoor is in the first game -You see the Deathday Party in the second game (Gameboy Color and PS1 versions) -Potion ingredients for the polyjuice potion are seen -You bring Norbert to Charlie Weasley's friends in the tallest tower (PC version) Etc. I agree, and I played both the PS1 and PC versions as a kid. Chamber of secrets PC version is my favorite out of all Harry potter games, it has an incredible soundtrack (pause menu track is nostalgic as fuck) and the general athmosphere of the game somehow feels different to the other games (I guess it has a "darker" vibe somehow). Goblet of Fire felt boring to me as well and never finished it. Order of phoenix was average and it had some very frustrating parts like finding the statues. Half blood prince was a bit better but I remember it being incredibly short. Never played the deathly hallows, and don't think I missed out on anything judging by how it looks :D. But in the end those ps1 and pc games are the only ones I've bothered to revisit even as an adult.

6th gen CoS is a weird case. The PS2 has several differences from the GC & Xbox versions. For one thing, on PS2 you can fully explore Hogwarts, camera angles are a lot better during the sneak sections, you can actually parry the prefects' spells with Expeliarmus, and there is more dialogue. The GC/Xbox ports feel stripped down in comparison, but have better performance.

I think if you jump into the order of the Phoenix with the mindset of it being more of a Hogwarts simulator than an action game you can get a lot more out of it. The fact that you could get from one end of the castle to the other with absolutely zero load times was mind-blowing back in the day, especially for Harry Potter game standards. It was basically a Harry Potter metroidvania and going for that 100% by exploring every nook and cranny of the map felt super satisfying as a Harry Potter nerd in my teens. Perhaps I'm looking at it through rose tinted glasses as I haven't touched the game since it came out. I'll definitely go back to it at some point just for the sake of confirming/rejecting what you said in this review. Back in that time, you didn't think what was right or wrong with this game, you just played it because there was no other options and it was drilling! It was a masterpiece for its time and for the age range. Plus I played with danish language so the the voice acting wasn't so bad as the english, as far as I can remember :D

I consider Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets for GBC and Prisoner of Azkaban for the GBA to be the most interesting Harry Potter games. The reason is because they were unique, they were turn-based RPG's that had a Final Fantasy vibe. The latter for the GBA even had a pseudo-3D system for the fights, it was actually kind of cool. Even had some elements from the books that weren't in the movies, like Peeves.

iirc, the sorcerer's / philosopher's stone on ps2 / gc / xbox was released after the chamber of secrets on said consoles, as it was somewhat a yearly release series at the time, so technically, the 1st movie's game is an improvement over the 2nd's game. Iirc, it was 3 reasons: the 3rd movie was a troubled production, & they wanted ALL the movies to have "recent" console versions, & they wanted to have a 2nd chance to fix the problems people had for that game & game engine before they got to prisoners of Azkaban, so a year that had no movie, & they could use assets made for chamber of secrets to make a game based on the 1st story to quicken the development a bit, since they are very similar vibe wise in both movie & book form, so that's what they did to fill the "a game per year" check.

I eventually was able to bring it home to play through the game proper, basically once it wasn't a common game for all of us to play on the daily, and I remember loving it but being so annoyed that about half way through that the Disc was scratched or something and effectively ceased to work at that point, never did get to finish it 😞 cool to hear that the 2nd HP on PS1 is basically just more of the same... Maybe I should make those the next 2 PS1 games to add to my Collection 🤔

Here's how I thought of the games. Considering PC versions only 1: Good start. 2: Incredible! Most nostalgic for me. 3: Also fantastic! I like that at the end you can visit the bean bonus room with no time limit. 4: What happened here? You just run through obstacle courses doing the same things repetedly. It doesn't feel as much like a Harry Potter experience. 5: Back on track. Although it doesn't really add to the experience from what you'd see in the movie. If you want to watch the plot unfold, just watch that. 6: Same as 5. 7: I'm watching a walkthrough of it now. So far I like how it makes you feel like you're really on the mission. Though I wish there was a points system to give incentive to play again, or at least Bertie Bott's beans. 8: Haven't looked into yet.

Can people just stop giving Rowling shit for defending ladies.
@seventeenseventythirteen7465
She doesn't care about the ladies, she just cares up to the point she can shit on trans people. Trans person does a thing, like any thing at all: JK is right there to tweet about how bad it is and how ladies are super oppressed over the trans agenda literally trying to murder them. Abortion rights stripped away: sleeps on it for a day or two then remembers she's supposed to be a feminist and kind of pushes back on it. She's not defending anyone, she's just a bigot.

@seventeenseventythirteen7465
@@andrewherman9915 I find it odd people still think like you considering that we have Google to actually look into things and not just believe whatever Fox News tells us to believe... Literally just not happening. Chopping up babies to change their sex, not happening. Trans women only "pretending to be women" just to win a few swimming tournaments, doesn't happen. Hormone therapy being this big scary irreversible damage, doesn't happen. I used to think like you, didn't know shit about trans people and thought "lol dudes in wigs I'm a helicopter lol" like a total dumbass because I just kind of believed the next guy that agreed with me already. Didn't spare a moment to learn what trans people were going through, even thought the whole "trans-trender" shit was real. I mean, who the fuck comes out as trans for attention? Most of the attention you get is either shallow like a "yass queen" and the rest is just hate and death threats. And on death threats, yeah, JK received them, not cool. But was that only and ALL trans people doing? No, trans people being blamed for this is entirely unfair, like saying black people are violent criminals gang members because you've got Chicago. She defends no one. She cares more about shitting on trans people as often as possible over any actual harm coming to women, like how in America taking away women's autonomy. Again, she just sat on that not caring until she realized she's supposed to be a feminist.

@@JDoe-gf5oz A bit more morally superior than someone saying that trying to raise the suicide rate of a marginalized group of people is helping out women somehow. Not sure how try to help legislate trans people into the shadow realm helps women but whatever, guess if she wants to consider herself a "feminist" while only ever doing work to hurt trans people then I can consider myself morally superior for disagreeing with her.

Sorcerer's Stone (Ps1 and 2) and Chamber of Secrets (Ps2 and PC) were my absolute favorite HP games growing up. I never really got into Prisoner of Azkaban, though I'm sure it was fine, but it didn't keep me engaged the way the first two did. And Goblet of Fire bored me so quick that I don't think I ever made it past the first level. Didn't even play any ones after that. But I played the first two games all the freaking time. They were so charming and whimsical, something that both the later games AND their movies lacked. And yeah, obviously they had problems, but in an era where licensed games were generally just taken for granted to be bad most of the time, those ones did stand out.

The PC versions of PS and COS are pretty good too. A lot of people say they're better than the PS1 versions. I actually really like the GBA/DS versions of GOF more than the console/PC versions. They actually take a better route on the dungeon crawler puzzle route and even have a bit of progression with giving you spells that make any repeat of bosses and whatnot easier. Yeah, the forest level is a bit of a slog, but once you get the water spell near the end, any returns for stuff will be faster since that spell oneshots the many salamander bosses in the area.
