I'm non-binary and I am torn. No one, not even JK Rowling can take away how her books made me feel. I will always cherish the memory of my Harry Potter 11th Birthday Cake, watching all the movies in theaters, going to the wizarding world for my graduation of high school present, and cosplaying at conventions, etc. However, I will no longer be supporting this franchise. I have a cosplay account on IG and I won't buy licensed merch, I will only buy from small businesses on ETSY (if I chose to). I love your videos! Thanks for your perspective!

Dont mind him, this isn't the first inflammatory post I've seen from them. Although to be clear, yes I have stopped supporting those industries. Nestle not for being Nazis (haven't heard that) but for intentionally killing a bunch of babies. I admit to having a hot pocket once a year though. So I guess I'm not as pure as I would like ;)

What I wished was talked about more is that Rowling is also a giant ableist. Yeah, she did not harm autistic people nearly as much as trans people, but she still said that we are to dumb to even know our own gender and so childlike and incompetent that we should not be allowed to make own decisions. And that needs to be talked about too, but somehow it is always sweept under the rug. Harry Potter is this family thing for my family, but after I found out how she sees people like me I just can't read or watch it anymore

I am a fan of a couple bad book podcast and one of them, can't remember which, covered another of those mystery thrillers written under an alias. This one was very positive about the idea that you should want to be physically disabled with heroes saying it and the narrative treating them as right. To be clear, it came close, though not necessarily there, of fetishizing these things and being blind to the full picture. What I'm trying to say is the most recent transphobic thriller is not the first time Rowling has expressed her more harmful views in that series. A series and alias she has said allowed her to Express herself in ways she didnt feel she could under her own name.

@@darlalathan6143 hello I'm also autistic, and I thought you'd like to know that Asperger was a nazi doctor and the History of the Aspergers diagnosis is basically, he chose some kids to experiment on, they called them Asperger's kinder. They were chosen amongst a bunch of autistic kids. The rest was killed. For a bunch of reasons this History is still very damaging to autistics at large. There's still very much a class distinction between Aspergers kids and "other autistics" or "those autistics". Asperger's is often used as a shield against the ableism that hits all of us. "I have Aspergers. I'm not like those people who can't even [insert whatever is deemed important to seem worthy of NT respect] I don't mean anything angry by this. It's just evil and cruel what Hans Asperger did to those kids/young adults. Of course, if an autistic person says they have Asperger's, I'm not holding it against them, cuz man, there is a lot in that term to unpack, and it's not anyone in the autistic community's fault for that term. @@doggytheanarchist7876 @Briana Pereira I am diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, not Autistic Spectrum Disorder. That is because the ICD-11 (where Aspergers as a diagnosis doesn't exist any longer and is now part of ASD) is still being translated in our language and legal framework . While I do understand the negative history of differentiating between Asperger Syndrome and Autism many people are actually diagnosed with Asperger-Syndrome not ASD and we need to be able to talk about our diagnosis without people accusing us of using harmful language and correcting us. While I personally would like to use the new term ASD and not Aspergers that is not my legal diagnosis and I actually need to use the correct diagnosis (Asperger-Syndrome) in many settings. I like that you were so respectful and I don't want to come off as rude or ignorant here, I just want to make sure people know that for many of us Asperger-Syndrome is the official diagnosis we have and we don't have the choice to just use a different term in our legal framework.

As a trans person who grew up with Harry Potter, it has been much easier for me to extract myself from her work because I was already involved in critiquing it before her transphobia started showing. I realized that I was less of a Harry Potter fan, and more of a Harry Potter *fandom* fan. I've never been much of a fanfic reader and usually keep fandoms at arms length, but the fan-canons and "fixes" always held more appeal to me than the source material. For example, the expansion of what the various Houses mean is all from the fanbase. It's why we know that Hufflepuff isn't just a dump house for goobers, and Slytherin isn't just for ambitious, racist jerks. Harry Potter will always be, to me, what the fans made of it. That's so much easier to bear.

I've struggled with this a lot. I don't think the death of the author works in this situation because JK Rowling has such a prominent presence in the world. She as a person is so wrapped up in the universe that I'm not sure if she can be separated out. I'm less worried with people engaging with her works and more about people excusing her actions. I personally am going to be very concious of how I spend my money relating to her in the future. I already have the books and movies so I don't feel conflict about enjoying those. I will however be trying very hard to limit the amount of Harry Potter merch I'll be buying (which is getting easier because everything I see in stores is very tacky).

@@xenagos3336 It's death *of* the author. Not to... It's a common term that originates in a 1967 literary essay arguing that authors and their work are entirely separate entities. In situations like this it helps people to continue enjoying a body of work without associating it with any feelings they might have about the author. It is similar to the idea that literary works stand on there own merits and any meaning derived by the reader is unrelated to the author's intent (there is obviously overlap between author intent and reader interpretation, but they are still separate). In this case many LGBT+ people found solace in the world of Harry Potter as a means of mental escape from troubles they faced in society, and the importance these works had in their lives cannot be diminished by the author's behaviour.

At one point opinions become hate-speak against a small group that has very little rights to protect them from said discrimination. Has Rowling the right to say what she wants to say? Sure. I'm not going to stop her. However, as a consequence of her freedom of speech, I have the right to decide if I want to give her more money. And I cannot, in good conscience, give my money to someone whose views put a group of people at risk. Do I agree with the Twitter mob attacking her? No. But I myself can decide how I spend my money. The problem I have is that she's integrated herself so much and so deeply with the franchise that it's damn near impossible to divorce them. She's always tweeting something about it, revealing something that "didn't make it into the books but is totally canon", or generally still being involved in it. And while forcing her out might work for the movies, it's still her IP and there's nothing preventing her from releasing new books, or "exclusive stuff" in Pottermore. Interacting only in fanworks IS an option, though it still gives her notoriety (it's a complicated subject, I even wrote a fanfic with a trans main character after her comments last year, and I still have complicated feelings about it). On a moral level, I feel comfortable saying that I can like the franchise but not Rowling herself. I can however understand why some feel that sentiment is impossible. Honestly the best way for the franchise to move forward is to either force Rowling out a la Gene Roddenberry, or have Rowling walk away with an appointed head a la George Lucas. Even if Rowling didnt have these horrible sentiments, its clear by now the franchise needs new talent and outside creatives to expand the franchise beyond Harry Potter and Hogwarts.

Uncle George always had collaborators. ESB was a kasdan/brackett script and directed by kershner. And uncle george was in his 70's when he sold to disney. JKR didn't have writing credits in the first films but she was instrumental in the casting of them, and hiring directors. Wasn't there some kind of conflict between her and spielberg that was part of what kept him from directing the first one? Spielberg is only on a list of the 5 greatest living directors and easily the best director to work with children and she's giving him notes? The main reason why she didn't have her business all up in the original films was because she was finishing the books. Rowling is still comparatively young. It's possible she'll be sticking her nose into mediums she doesn't fully grasp well into her 80's. Our best hope is that she drops her bigotry and learns that books and movies are two different mediums. Tolkien understood that books are a separate medium. He sold the rights only because he needed the money then looked away because he knew the two mediums are not alike.

I'm really good at separating author from work when the author is a scumbag (I love Ender's Game and pretend Orson Scott Card doesn't exist) but I always contextualize other works from their author, for example: Gene Rodenberry being a Humanist enhances my understanding of Star Trek, or George Orwell's history of fighting in the Spanish Civil War makes his work all the more interesting. The worst part is when Mary first arrives in England. Martha the servant girl tells her she thought Mary was "a black" and Mary throws a fit and literally says the natives "aren't even human." This is horrendous no matter how you slice it, but you could argue that this is one of the many ways the book shows how truly awful Mary is at this point. However, even Martha who is framed as a truly good person blames Mary's unpleasantness on "not growing up around civilized folk." India doesn't actually make up a large part of the story, but this particular section is painful to read for anyone (I can't even imagine how it would feel for a child of color). After this point the story turns its focus to the garden and the joy of nature with just a spattering of racism (and classism) to remind you it was written in 1911. I'm undecided on wether having the prejudices of the time on display in such a graphic way is good for a children's book because in encourages conversation or if a book containing such blatant racism should even be considered a children's classic.

@mikaylaeager7942 3 года назад
@Madisen Helwig Yeah. The thing that sets Secret Garden (and little house) apart from works like Oliver is that the POC are said to be bad (by white characters), but not necessarily shown to be bad. Sure the Indian servants don't seem to care about or even like Mary, but why should they care about a colonizers child who slaps them in the face. They don't have the freedom to speak plainly to her as the English servants do because she would tell on them and probably get them fired or worse. Of course, this isn't something that's actually addressed in the book, so it requires a lengthy conversation with your child, but with this perspective in mind, I don't feel like it's a entirely inaccurate portrayal of the time period (although still not a flattering or inclusive one). If I have children I think I'll read them these stories, but I'd be sure to make them aware of the history before reading them and try to make them understand the story from an Indian perspective. Otherwise I think there is a danger of blaming the Indian servants for how Mary turned out as Martha does. I'd also make sure that if they read Secret Garden they also read Haroun and the Sea of Stories and if the read Little House they also read The Birchbark House. I don't think I'd read them Oliver Twist. Maybe the musical... I don't think the anti-semitism is as blatant there. TBD

Their are many "intersex" people out there, many who don't even know it. This does include "hermaphrodites" (people with both sex organs). But also people with different genetic codes. In fact, their are more intersex people than their are left handed people in the world. But that is all sex and genetics. Gender is different. You know that blue is "boy" and pink is "girl" right? JKR has used her platform to spread lies and falsehoods about trans people and caused us harm, she has manipulated the media to paint herself as the victim, persecuted by "unhinged" and "abusive" trans activists, as if anything anyone of us does could hurt a goddamned *billionaire*. She has sued people who criticized her transphobia for using that word to (correctly!) describe her words and actions - because her delicate, prescious feelings are ever so hurt by that word, and so, so much more important than the lives of trans people. Her stans label *any* criticism of JKR abusive, no matter how justified and objectively accurate i.e. refering to the politics of the Potter novels as "neo-liberal" or saying that JKR is wealthy and out-of-touch. Her vile "Protocols of the Elders of -Zion- Trans" screed has received praise and accolades from the media, rather the derision, disgust and condemnation it deserves. Saying that this series means a lot to me would be putting it mildly. The Harry Potter books were some of the only ones I was allowed to own, usually saved up for by literally scraping together loose change. This world was an escape for me from a very dark place, and it showed me the story of someone else who could escape too, and who could grow and become better through the people around them, and it showed me what good relationships should look like (at least in part). And though I have grown as a person, and will continue to do so, this series will always be special and important to me in a way that no other has been. And in a very weird way this has only encouraged me to try and "make it my own" in a sense. I refuse to let something I like, something I love, be entirely defined by a woman filled with so much hatred and bigotry, who can't even see what harm she's causing, and worse, believes she is somehow doing good. I will not give her a single cent, I will not go to see any new movies, or even watch the old movies unless I already have the physical copy's of them, and whenever something new comes out I will always look at it as critically as I can before, during, and after engaging with it (if I even chose to do so.) That said, I also don't believe that showing this media to new audiences is the way to go either. As others in this comment section have pointed out, there are better things made by people with far less hatred in their hearts that you can show to others and enjoy. My solution is primarily for me and my close friends, and those around us, as we try to undo any harmful views the series imparted, and as we try and continue to enjoy something that brought us all together. There's still good here, but you just can't engage with it without first dealing with and acknowledging the bad. And hopefully, HOPEFULLY, someone will come in besides her who can lead the Wizarding World to even greater heights, because the children and adults who loved it and needed it deserve that much at the very least.

No. I don't feel cancelling the Harry Potter franchise is the answer. There is a simple solution. If people have a problem with the author, don't cancel the franchise, just don't buy the books or watch the adaptations. That would however prevent you from expressing an informed opinion on coming releases. There are, as you correctly observe, other ways for you to engage with the franchise without supporting the author. Critical analysis is important and you do it marvellously. Express your views freely.

Yeah, I get you. I'm partway about this too. On one hand, Rowling is a harsh TERF. On the other hand, people should be smart enough to have good opinions for themselves. I find that very difficult. As a public figure, you are put into a role model role, but people themselves are also responsible for what they believe and on what grounds. Canceling someone on different views like anti-vax can become very dangerous if we go too far and it becomes full-blown censoring of different opinions. However, I have still decided to not support Rowling anymore. What it basically came down to was that it made me uncomfortable. Not everyone is going to feel that way and as long as people understand her views are wrong, that's totally okay too. I do think her influence is dangerous and damaging to the Trans community. This is why I don't think the death of the author works completely. But is a very narrow road between bigoted and discriminatory views (TERF) and general unpopular opinions and ignorance (Anti-Vax or Flu shots).

@@twinkles190 the thing with the slippery slope argument is that you can easily put blocks in to prevent anything from sliding very far. nobody (of whom i'm aware, at least) is talking about censoring Rowling; just not putting her in a position to take her seriously. she can say what she wants, but she doesn't have a right to be listened to, and deciding as a society that we won't listen to racist, sexist, transphobic or whatever talking points is how we move on from them as a society. they can't be debated because they're not based in logic, so we have to take away their undeserved legitimacy. that isn't to say that one can't talk about gender or transphobia, nor any other thing; however, the conversations we have about them have to be sincere and in good faith, and only with the goal of furthering our understanding

@@azrael_hypo I think we actually agree. So I going to write what I mean more clearly. Be ready for way too long a text: I agree about Rowling. All the things she is saying only spread hate. She does have the freedom to say it and to bear the consequences for it, which is honestly canceling and maybe a lawsuit. What Rowling spouts is discriminatory and transphobic, which is a violation of the law, and shouldn't fall under freedom of speech. Especially because what she is doing has a lot of consequences and it affects the people around her. That isn't censorship, that's protecting basic human rights. However, just to take a recent example. The actress for Shuri in the MCU expressed skepticism for the Covid-19 Vaccine. Then, just because a large portion disagreed with her (admittedly poorly done the research) they clamored Disney to fire her. They basically tried to bully her out of a job for having an opinion. Luckily, they didn't fire her, but it was so extreme she has now left social media. Things like these can go too far. At first, we cancel truly discriminatory "opinions", then we cancel the opinions the vast majority disagrees with, and then slowly we cancel opinions for being in a space with other strongly held different opinions. In the end, you can't express your opinions anymore without fear for your job. How are ignorant people ever going to learn anything if they are attacked as soon as they make a mistake? How does that ensure peaceful conversation and discussion? I agree we should create a more peaceful and nurturing environment, but this has to include people whose views disgust us because even those people are capable of change. (Rowling may be passed that point, but while I'm all for canceling her, I'm not for insulting her on Twitter). Right now, an old tweet from 5 years ago can get you fired, regardless of whether or not your views changed. Did you treat something lightly in your ignorance? Boom... fired. Never mind that while you can be ignorant in one part of life, in other parts of life you may possess a lot of wisdom. We lock a lot of doors if we stop listening and start insulting. TL;TR: I mind canceling Rowling, I'm doing it myself after all, but I do disagree with other things being canceled to the point that it becomes censoring. I feel Rowling is firmly in fine to cancel camp, others are a little iffier. That's what I mean when I say canceling can potentially come close to censorship. I'm not saying it will happen or anything, it's a really heavy doomsday scenario. I feel dumb for writing it, but I do think we should pay attention to it. We should indeed put canceling in closed blocks to make sure :) And this is all without mentioning how what you do reflects on your employers etc. I hope this cleared it up a little!

I understand why people were really into it when they were kids/teenagers, but the fact that it still holds so much power over adults stuns me. Like the last three books aren't very good plot wise and I've held that opinion since I was a teen. I would be very happy to see people move on from Harry Potter and start reading other works of fiction instead of defining themselves by this one. especially since the existence of Harry Potter has made it near impossible for other magical school fiction to succeed. Harry Potter has become it for that genre and that sucks. Especially since it's not a very well-developed world. it just has some fun characters and people liked the idea of being sorted into houses (which are pretty arbitrary when you think about it).

@@Corbomite_Meatballs There's a big difference between the ones you listed and Harry Potter. Your list is "genre defining" work. Harry Potter is genre destroying. I can name a dozen works similar to Star Trek, Hunger Games, LotR, etc. because they're all just good genre fiction that inspired others or fit an already existing category. In spite of the fact that almost nothing in Harry Potter is original (wands, magical school, house system, the creatures, and so on are all just things she took from elsewhere) Harry Potter is IT for magical school fiction in the west. You literally cannot get new magical school stuff published professionally. It's just "too similar to HP" which is not healthy. One of the biggest things the fandom needs to do is acknowledge that JK didn't come up with most of the stuff they love (which is fine. Troupes are a thing for a reason, but do not call her brilliant for using things that have existed for literal centuries) Because of this inability to diversify the genre, the Harry Potter fandom is unhealthy compared to most franchises. You can have a sci-fi con and see lots of works represented. You can't have a "magical school" con. You can only have an HP con. Which is insane. The books finished years ago. How are people not tired of them? What do you even do at these cons when all you've got for a creator is JK? Like, that's the big scary part. It's not a team of creators. It's a creator. JK god and people worship her. Most fandoms die down once a work is over. HP just keeps going. To give a counter example Star Trek is ongoing and has years worth of content. It has a whole slew of writers and directors involved. You can easily talk about new things every year or wait a while to revisit things. You can't do that when you have 7 books of content and most of the related content is either adaptations of those books or JK's twitter feed. I have met fans for basically every nerdy show/book out there and none of them have the levels of unhealthy obsession I see in HP fans. Yes, every fandom has its crazies, but the commonality of the HP obsession is scary. People define themselves by these novels and that's unhealthy in the extreme. Like, I am often afraid to mention that I dislike the books when I learn someone is a fan because of the extreme negativity I receive just for saying "yeah, I don't think the last ones were very good" If HP were just another Star Trek (something people liked, but usually one of many sci-fi shows they loved), I wouldn't care, but it's not. It's an insular community ruled by a woman who thinks she can do no wrong. It needs to go away or at least die down to a normal fandom. No creator should have the kind of power JK does. She's an author of entertainment fiction. That should be the only realm where her opinion matters more than the average joe. #ReadAnotherBook

I remember my interest dropping after book 4 though I persevered, I remember being annoyed at how the last book ended especially the Happily ever after epilogue also was annoyed by her breaking her own rules for how the magical world worked. My theory was always that she got lost in building the mythology of the setting and lost interest in the actual plot of her series. Looking back as an adult I’ve noticed other more problematic aspects to the books (helped by Rowling continually tweeting about the series which kept it in the public consciousness). I stopped watching the films after the last book came out I was so underwhelmed by the last book also helped by my finding the 5th film to be rather poor. I do enjoy the Audiobooks and re-listen to them from time to time, but that might be more to do with Stephen Fry’s performance and it helps deal with my insomnia. My position is essentially that I won’t buy any JKR product until she no longer profits from it, but I don’t begrudge anyone who still does. As a trans woman, I was deeply hurt by the fact that Rowling has said these transphobic things. I haven't even read them because just knowing that she said them was hurtful enough. I had a yer-long Wizarding World crisis in which I would not interact with Harry Potter including stopping to write my HP fanfic which dealt with the German Wizarding World in the early 21st century. Now, in early 2021, I've finally felt...I don't know how escribe the emotion...well enough? to interact with Harry Potter again and I've started to write a new fic that will deal with the adventures of a British witch and her two friends at Hogwarts and beyond while the Wizarding World around them begins to changed in the wake of the advancement of Muggle technology in the 21st century. My protagonist is Mabel Elliott, an British-Australian witch with a Black British mother and a whilte Australian father. She is the second-oldest of four siblings who all are incredibly powerful having mastered wandless and non-verbal magic since their early childhood to the point where wands are actually annoying to them (this is my answer to Rowling's incredibly colonialist narrative of Magic in North America as well as her statement that wands were invented in Europe while implying that they were more powerful than wandless magic because goblins wish that they could increase their magic by using wands). Her friends are 1) Linh Văn, a British-Vietnamese trans man whose father came to the Uk with the Boat People in the 70s and is now Minister of Defence while his wife is an Auror in the Ministry of Magic. 2) Aqila Shafiq, a pure-blood whose family is part of the Sacred Twenty-Eight and came to the UK during the Crusades. Her family has a long Muslim tradition. All three main characters are Ravenclaws.

I think it would be even better if you are her having a white British father and an indigenous Australian mother. That would fit with your comment on colonialism even better. Ok, first thing: Harry Potter the tv series could be really interesting however there are some massive opportunitys: 1) Diversity - would it not be really interesting to massively re-cast it. Apart from Ron's family (You cannot get rid of the Gingers) does the race of anyone in Harry Potter matter? Would Herminone not work even better as an asian or indian girl? Would it not be really interesting to have all of the pure bloods families be other races? 2) Sexuality - If they did a book a season that would give them loads of time to explore characters and the world. Would the wizarding world care who you sleep with? What would be different in a world with magic (see point 3) and no christian anti-roman propaganda? 3) Trans - Why would biological sex be an issue in a world with magic? (Star Trek - Why is biological sex an issue in the 24th or 33rd century?) Peter Hamilton has it in one of his series of books that no one cares anymore because everyone has lived as both. How interesting would it be to gender flip Harry? There is a potion and you take it and you are the opposite sex so Hilary Potter finds out from her hogwarts letter that she is a male wizard. 4) Sexism - Why? 4) Sort the story - time turners, pure bloods, mud-bloods(an expression that makes no sense in the story), and I am sure there are a lot more. Second thing: Still really looking forward to your JK Rowling video because is she anti-trans or pro-biological women? Also what new laws in the UK? Do not understand were this is coming from and it starting to bug me. Third thing: I believe female authors use male names for crime fiction and male authors do the same for romance. It something to do with the public and sales. It a bit of a weird one as women buy more books than men so women are not buying women crime writers.

I guess I'm fortunate in that I've sort of been "over" Harry Potter for quite a while, even before Joanne started with her transphobic nonsense. Chances are, I was never going to give the Harry Potter franchise another dime anyway, and Joanne just changed that probability into a certainty. Harry Potter was a big part of my life when I was younger, but I've since found other media to be attached to. That's the wonder of growing up: you're allowed to change.

What has honestly been worrying me more than Rowling’s involvement within the HP franchise is the fact that the last book made the bestseller list and the idea that the Twitter controversy surrounding it actually helped it to get there. If not for the issues that surrounded her this past year, I would have not even known she’d written another book. While I do enjoy this franchise, I do not have a problem missing out on future releases. I planned on skipping FB3 after I heard she’d written an essay to double down on beliefs regarding trans people, and my decision was reinforced after the removal of Johnny Depp. That being said, I wonder if there is a better way of confronting feelings of prejudice in general; one that acknowledges the humanity and capacity for good in a person while confronting their flaws. As I see it, “cancel culture” is not an idea that works well. No one of any note has truly been “canceled” since Roseanne Barr; on the contrary, what the Twitter mob often succeeds in accomplishing is finding sympathizers for a celebrity with problematic views, and those sympathizers often will adopt those views themselves. Is there honestly a way to foster understanding and tolerance (at the very least) through social media? The internet itself just dehumanizes all of us to each other.
@LlanoRiverBlue

Ugh this is painfully true. I wouldn't be paying any attention to anything JKR is doing if it weren't for the twitter mob. And she is certainly not changing her views because she's getting cyber bullied. It's probably just helping her double down.

Wait, why are you upset about Depp being removed? That sounds like a good thing to me. Even if we accept the abuse allegations are untrue, he just isnt a good actor for the part. He plays himself every time.
@gingerbell07
@gingerbell07 3 года назад
@@rosemali3022 it’s the double standard. I don’t usually weigh in on these sort of feuds, but there is a lot of evidence Heard is the abuser in this case. Either way, I was already not watching, Depp’s removal only cemented the decision.

I would love to be a part of the Harry Potter TV show, not just because I’ve always liked the series, but because it would give me enough fame and platform to be able to directly speak out against J.K. Rowling, and donate some of my pay to foundations and groups that help trans people. I mean, I’m an American with no acting experience...but hey, a kid can dream, right?

Harry Potter is a series that will always be near and dear to my heart. And my thing with the whole "cancel Harry Potter" idea is just that I think this franchise is too big for us to really stop. WB is like you said going to still be making content, so what to those of us who still want to engage with that content do? I started playing the Hogwarts Mystery mobile game mainly because someone pointed out to me you can date same gendered characters in it. Meaning, as far as I can tell, this little mobile game is the only piece of HP content with any kind of clear cut LGBT representation. I even started blogging about my story in the game showing my MC being in a relationship with one of the characters and it makes me happy. But I've been sure to make my feelings on JK Rowling clear, namely that I do not agree with her at all and I feel like her actions are a betrayal of everything her books taught me. Many people are leaving the fandom over this and I don't blame them, but like I said earlier I think HP is too big for us to really make any kind of dent in its pressence in the main stream pop culture. And I know A LOT of casual fans who are not even aware of Rowlings stances. And thats kind of the big reason I'm staying around, because I want to spread the word on why Rowling's stances are harmful and wrong, but I still believe the books she created are ulitimately a positve in this world because it does teach people empathy, it does teach people why bigotry is wrong and I think most people come out better on the other side of it. Even if the author herself seems to have forgot the lessons she herself taught.

My wand was a handmade gift from a friend who does wood-working as a hobby, so I didn't pay for that, but I do have all the books up to and including "The Cursed Child." They're currently on my bookshelf, making me feel guilty. The first book came out when I was in middle school, so I am one of those Millennials who grew up with the series. On the one hand I can't help remembering how it felt to read them for the first time, but on the other hand it makes me sick to look at them now. I have the feeling I'll never be able to stand reading them again, but I don't think I could bear getting rid of them.

Tbqh I have a couple opinions here. 1) Harry Potter isn't going to get better than what it's already achieved through the original run but it can and will stand to get a lot worse. 2) This is truly showing that capitalism shorts out the desire to boycott. Even if a small population of us avoid it for the right reason the people that either dont care or tell themselves it's okay because Rowling might not influence things dwarves us considerably. I'm not going to really force people to see what I see or agree with me, but I cant ever go back to Harry Potter. For any reason. Keeping it going is dragging out the same dessicated horse over and over. Even if she isn't attached, it keeps the spore of her original ideas alive. It keeps the series going and grabbing fans, and those fans could go on to adhere to her views I fear.

The fact J.K is clearly transphobic and people still want to look into giving her more money not like the series is out of public view. I personally will not spend any money on her stuff or anything to finance her and will continue to try explaining why it's harmful to others. But I love being a hufflepuff and the family hardback books we bought as they came out. Tempted to put a trans flag on my Harry Potter canvas though.

I can only speak for myself, but I personally want nothing more to do with the franchise. I will never give another penny to it, nor watch or engage with anything new, or even indulge with the films and books I already own. No more in totality. She was my childhood hero and my inspiration to become a writer, but she is a monster, and I will not further contribute to her profits and power, which she uses to attack people. There are other franchises out there with better people involved. And I encourage others to do so as well, abandon ship and find something better.

I'm so desperately sad because the next Fantastic Beasts is going to be, at least in part, in my country and it is going to be the only foreign movie passed here without depicting my country as "bad" or "poor", and if it depends on me and others like me it is going to flop on the box office and I'm afraid that the studios are going to get the wrong message out of it and think that it is Brazil that is "toxic" for the movie, not JK Rowling, and that Brazilian audiences do not want to see themselves in movies. And they are doing so great, hiring Brazilian actors to play Brazilian characters (unlike most movies that have a Brazilian character)... I really, really wish I could watch this movie, but I *cannot* support JK Rowling, and I'm making my voice heard that that is the sole reason why I'm not going to watch this movie.

I only stayed in position as the society gives people a space during lockdown and held a trans and nb member meeting asking if we disband, rename or stay and all said they wanted us to stay. Despite the fact the committee has trans and nb members and was informed by our trans and nb members that they want us to continue we have recieved hate for existing and its hard because we have hate from terfs for existing and supporting our trans and nb members and hate for being called Hogwarts. I still like Harry Potter (I'm cis btw, so maybe my point of view is different), but it is not the same. I guess I feel a deep disappointment in Rowling because I looked up to her so much as a child. I don't buy HP products much anymore, I haven't seen all the Fantastic Beasts movies. I think I kinda outgrew the universe when they started expanding the franchise to things that deviated from the original story. The worst was The Cursed Child. It was just a horrible money grab. Though I actually spent money on that. I wish I didn't. I don't think I will have much problems not giving Rowling my money... except I will be getting Hogwarts Legacy. I have wanted this my entire life! I need it. Also I do feel bad for the team who have worked their butts off for this game if nobody wanted to play it because the author who created the universe couldn't stop pissing people off.
